打算在阅读这本书时,按章按页进行学习总结:
以下是我在学习笔记中标记的表现形式

sleeve [sli:v] n. 袖子
[例] I felt a tug at my sleeve.
     我觉得有人拽了一下我的袖子。
[例] She knew the truth all along and was laughing up her sleeve at us.
     她早就知道真相,却一直在暗中笑话我们。

sleeveless ['sli:vlis]   adj. 无袖的

[原文] I was wearing my favorite shirt --sleeveless, white eyelet lace.
     我穿着我最喜欢的那件无袖带白色蕾丝边的裙子。

omnipresent   [ɔmni'prezənt]    adj. 无处不在的 being present everywhere at once
   [延伸]omni 全总公都, omni- 前缀 表示"全";"总";"泛"
   [例]omnipresent 无所不在的, omnipotent 全能的, omniform 式样齐全的.

gloomy ['glu:mi]   adj. 抑沉的,忧闷的
[例] Share prices plunged as a result of the gloomy economic forecast.
     该项预测展望经济前景暗淡, 因而股票价格大跌.

     她总是那样情绪低沉。


exile ['eksail, 'egz-]   n. 放逐,流放,被放逐者 v. 放逐,流放

[例] He was in the unenviable position of having to choose between imprisonment or exile.
     他已陷於进退维谷的地步, 不是坐牢就是流放, 必须在两者间做出抉择.
[例] exile myself 放逐自己

detest [di'test]   v. 厌恶
[例] I detest all affectation.
     我厌恶一切矫揉造作的行为.
[例] She detests having to talk to people at parties.
     她讨厌在宴会上为应酬而和人交谈。

spasm ['spæzəm] n. 抽筋,痉挛

[例] A spasm or fit; a convulsion.
     阵发痉挛或短暂发作;抽搐
[例] The muscles in the athlete's leg went into spasm.
     那运动员的腿抽筋了。

panic ['pænik]   n. 恐慌,惊惶 adj. 惊慌的,没有理由的,恐慌的   v. 使...惊慌
[例] The crowd panicked at the sound of the explosion.
     爆炸声一响,人群便惊慌起来。
[例] She got into a panic when she thought she'd forgotten the tickets.
     她想起忘记带入场券,顿时惊慌起来。

sacrifice ['sækrifais]   n. 牺牲,供俸,祭品   v. 牺牲,祭祀,贱
[原文] But I could see sacrifice in her eyes behind the promise.
       但是我可以从她(贝拉的母亲)的眼睛里看到允诺背后对我的放弃

genuine ['dʒenjuin]   adj. 真正的,真实的,诚恳的              (page5)
[例] Genuine racial equality still seems light-years away.
     真正的种族平等似乎仍遥遥无期.
[例] A genuine friend will not desert you in time of adversity.
     真正的朋友不会在患难时弃你而去。
*注:在这里我想强调自己注意的是以下两个例子中的含义和用法
[例] Is this bracelet genuine gold?
     这个手镯是纯金的吗?
[例] This jade dragon is a genuine antique.
     这件玉龙是真正的古玩。

verbose [və:'bəus]   adj. 用字多的,冗长,冗赘的

distaste ['dis'teist] n. 不喜欢,厌恶

[例] She looked at the vendor who cheated her the other day with distaste.
     她厌恶地望着那个前几天曾经欺骗过她的小贩。
[例] She grimaced in/with distaste at the thought of it.
     她一想到那个就厌恶得作怪相.

omen ['əumen] n. 征兆,预兆   vt. 预示
[例] It's an omen of victory. 那是胜利的预兆。
[例] The crow is a bird of ill omen.   乌鸦是不祥的预兆。

scarcity ['skɛəsiti]   n. 缺乏,不足,缺少
[例] The factory is in frequent scarcity of raw materials.    这个工厂经常原料不足。
[例] The scarcity of food forced prices up.   食物短缺促使物价上涨。

stumble ['stʌmbl]   n. 绊倒,失策   v. 使绊倒,失策
[例] The child stumbled through a piece by Chopin.   那孩子费劲地奏完一支肖邦的曲子。
[例] I stumbled over a tree root.   我在一个树根上绊了一跤。

permeable ['pə:miəbl]   adj. 可渗透的

[例] A thin sheet of natural or synthetic material that is permeable to substances in solution.
     膜由天然的或合成的材料制成的薄片,可允许溶液中之溶质通过
[原文] Most of my Arizona clothes were too permeablefor Washington.
       我亚利桑那的大部分衣服对于(寒冷潮湿的)华盛顿而言都太薄了.

wardrobe ['wɔ:drəub]   n. 衣柜
[例] The wardrobe takes up too much space/room.   这衣橱太占地方了.

scanty ['skænti]   adj. 缺乏的,仅有的,不够的
[例] The beggar shivered in his scanty clothes.   乞丐穿着单薄,冻得发抖。
[例] He is scanty with words.   他沉默寡言。
[原文] My mom and I pooled our resoures to supplement my winter wardrobe, but it was still scanty.

strap [stræp]   n. 绳,皮带 v. 用绳索捆扎
[例] All the luggage has been strapped up.   所有行李都已捆扎好。
[例] Her camera strap has broken.   她的照相机吊带断了。
[延伸] strap in   拴上安全带

[原文] How cheap is cheap? 多么廉价才是廉价?

intense [in'tens]   adj. 非常的,强烈的,紧张的,热情的
[例] His leg was numbed by the intense pain.
     他的腿因剧痛而麻木。
[例] I did not go to the cinema because of the intense cold.
     我因为严寒没出去看电影。
[例] Under his intense gaze she felt uncomfortable.
     他目不转睛地看著她, 使她觉得很不自在.

gruff [grʌf] adj. 粗鲁的

stipulation [.stipju'leiʃən]   n. 约束,约定,契约
[例] May I refer you to the contract stipulation about packing(or shipping..)?
     请您看看合同中有关包装(装运)的规定。

dwell [dwel]   v. 居住; 细说;
[例] Stop dwelling on your problems and do something about them!
     别老唠叨你的那些问题,还是做些实际工作解决它们吧!
[例] He decided to dwell on our island.
     他决定到我们的岛上居住。

hover ['hɔvə]   v. 盘旋,翱翔,徘徊

deject [di'dʒekt]   v. 使沮丧,使灰心
[例] Dejected because of a lack of companionship.
     寂寞的由于缺少伙伴而沮丧的
[例] The old man seemed dejected and spiritless.
     那老汉显出一副垂头丧气的潦倒相。

freak [fri:k]   n. 怪人,怪事,反复无常   adj. 奇异的
[例] He was really confused by the freak result.
     这个异乎寻常的结果让他非常困惑。
[例] By some strange freak mistake, I was overpaid this month.
     真希奇,这个月多给我钱了。
