slender ['slendə] adj. 细长的,苗条的
[例] A slender hope still flickered within him. 他心中仍闪出一线希望.
[例] A slender smile still flickered across her face.   她脸上闪过一丝微笑。
[例] She was slender and had long dark hair.   她身材苗条,有一头长长的黑发。

sallow/sallower ['sæləu] adj. 淡黄色的,苍白的,气色不好的
                           v. 使成苍白色 n. 柳属植物,此种植物的树枝

[例] She is ill with a sallow face.   她病了,面色发黄。
[原文] Maybe it was light, but already I looked sallower, unhealthy.

translucent [trænz'lju:snt]   adj. 半透明的
[例] An often portable case with transparent or translucent sides for holding and protecting a light.
     提灯一种可经常携带的装置,带有透明或半透明的侧面以装入和保护灯
[例] The lavatory windows are made of translucent glass.
     厕所窗户是用半透明玻璃做的。
[例] She wears a translucent silk gown.
     她穿着半透明丝质长袍。

drizzle ['drizl] n. 细雨   v. 下毛毛雨
[例] Drizzle from a leaden sky.

[例] Would you like to go for a walk in the drizzle?
      想去毛毛雨里散会儿步吗?
[例] It had been drizzling all day.
      下了一整天的毛毛雨。

soak [səuk]   n. 浸,湿透,大雨   v. 使上下湿透,浸,吸入
[例] Don't stand out there: you'll get soaked through.
     你别站在外边,要不全身都要湿透了

eaves ['i:vz]   n. 屋檐

[例] The rainwater drips from the eaves.   雨水从屋檐滴下。
[例] The swallow has made a nest under our eaves.    燕子在我们的屋檐下垒了一个窝。

gossip ['gɔsip] n. 闲聊,随笔 v. 说闲话
[例] He's a terrible gossip. 他专爱说人闲话.
[例] She loves to gossip to her neighbors.    她喜欢议论邻居们的是非长短。

precarious [pri'kɛəriəs]   adj. 不确定的,危险的
[例] What a precarious situation we were in when the avalanche started!
     雪崩发生的时候我们的处境多么危险啊!
[例] Our financial situation is still precarious if we postpone the release of the new product.
     如果我们推迟发布新产品的话,我们的财政状况仍然岌岌可危。

stack [stæk] n. 堆叠,堆 v. 堆积,做牌,选派

[例] The floor was stacked up with books.
      地板上堆满了书。
[例] Traffic was stacked up for miles because of the accident.
      车祸引起了交通堵塞,车辆排起的长龙有好几里长。
[例] There is a stack of dishes to be washed in the kitchen.

feeble ['fi:bl] adj. 虚弱的,无力的
[例] His feeble excuses soon tailed off (into silence).
     他的藉口站不住脚, 很快就没词儿了(不作声了).
[例] This was his fatal defect; he was of feeble will.
     这是他致命的弱点,他意志薄弱。
[例] Having a feeble or unsteady gait; shaky.
     不稳的,虚弱的;摇晃的

exhale [eks'heil, eg'zeil] v. 呼气,发出,发散
[例] Follow me please, inhale! exhale!
     跟我做,吸气!呼气!
[例] He lit his cigar and exhaled smoke.
     他点燃雪茄,然后吐出烟雾。
[原文] I finally exhaled and stepped out of the truck.
      最终,我身呼了一口气,然后迈出了车门

nameplate ['neimpleit]   n. 铭牌,标示牌

drone [drəun] n. 雄蜂,懒惰著者,翁翁的声音   v. 翁翁作声,混日子
[例] He always drones on about his problems.
     他总是唠唠叨叨地诉说自己的麻烦。
[例] An aeroplane droned overhead.
     一架飞机在头上嗡嗡飞过。

aisle [ail] n. (席位间的)通道                     (page16)
[例] The organ play as the bride come down the aisle.
     当新娘沿著通道走过来时,风琴演奏了起来。
[例] The girl ushered me along the aisle to my seat.
     引座小姐带领我沿著通道到我的座位上去.

tentative ['tentətiv] n. 试验,假设adj. 试验性质的,暂时的,犹豫不决的
[例] Could is used to make more tentative suggestions.
     可用以提出较试探性的建议。

tan [tæn]   n. 鞣制革,黄褐色 adj. 黄褐色的   v. 晒黑
[例] Jane tanned quickly in the sun.
      简在太阳下很快就晒黑了。
[例] It took me all summer to get this tan.
      我花了整个夏天才晒出这样的棕褐色。


sarcasm ['sɑ:kæzəm]   n. 挖苦,讽刺
[例] Her sarcasm touched his self-esteem.
     她讥讽的言语伤了他的自尊心.
[例] Sarcasm became a sledge hammer in their debate.
     在他们的辩论中,讽刺成为强有力的武器。
[例] His speech had some relish of sarcasm.
     他的演讲带着些许讽刺。

vague [veig] adj. 模糊的,不明确的,说话含糊不清的

[例] At the back of his mind was the vague idea that he had met her before.
     他隐隐约约地觉得以前曾经见过她.
[例] I have a fancy (ie a vague idea) that he will be late.
     我感觉他要迟到.
[例] His vague ideas crystallized into a definite plan.
     他那些模糊的想法变成了一个明确的计划.
[例] She is so vague that I can never understand what she is trying to say.
     她说话含含糊糊,我怎么也听不明白她想说些什么。


stammer ['stæmə]   n. 结巴,口吃 v. 口吃,结巴   vi. 结结巴巴地说话,口吃 vt. 结结巴巴地说
[例] He stammers when he feels nervous.
     他一紧张就结巴。
[例] The boy dare not answer the questions because of his stammer.
     这个小男孩因为结巴不敢回答老师的问题。

prattle ['prætl]   v. 小孩般说话,说半截话,闲聊   n. 半截话,无聊话

tray [trei]   n. 盘,托盘,碟
[例] Put the tray over there.
把托盘放到那边去.
[例] I tripped over, dropping the tray I was carrying.
我绊了一下, 手中的托盘掉在地上了.

devastating ['devəsteitiŋ] adj. 破坏性的, 全然的

[例] The area is subject to devastating seasonal winds.
     这个地区常遭破坏性季风的袭击。

fraction ['frækʃən]   n. 分数,小部分,破片 (这个词貌似不是很好用,也不好理解的样子) (page19)
[例] The car stopped within a fraction of an inch of the wall.
     汽车在离墙不到一英寸的地方停住了。
[例] The door opened a fraction.
     门稍微开了条缝。
[例] One forth is a proper fraction.
     四分之一是一个真分数。

presume [pri'zju:m]   v. 假定,推测,占便宜
[例] The law presumes innocence until guilt is proved.
     在罪状未证实前,法律假定被告无罪。
[例] I didn't presume to interpret it.
     我不敢对这一点妄加解释。
[例] A signed invoice presumes receipt of the shipment.
     经过签字的发票表示货物已经收到。

surge [sə:dʒ]   n. 巨涌,汹涌,澎湃   v. 汹涌,澎湃
[例] A surge of demonstrators broke through the fence.
     汹涌而来的示威者冲破了围栏。
[例] Anger surged up within him.
     怒火在他心中燃烧

swift [swift]   adj. 快的,迅速的 adv. 快速地 n. 雨燕

[例] With the failure of the peace talks all hopes of a swift end to the war have flown out of the window.
     和谈失败後, 迅速结束战争的希望都已化为乌有.
[例] The president promised swift and effective retribution against the terrorists.
     总统答应会迅速有效地惩罚恐怖分子。
[例] They've been very swift to deny these rumors.
     他们在辟谣方面反应迅速。

unmet [ʌn'met] adj. 未满足的,未相遇的,未应付的                 (page22)

surreptitious [.sʌrəp'tiʃəs]   adj. 鬼鬼祟祟的,保密的
[例] His surreptitious behaviour naturally aroused suspicion.
     他那鬼鬼祟祟的行为自然引起了旁人的怀疑。

rigid ['ridʒid] adj. 僵硬的,刻板的,严格的
[例] Beliefs have ossified into rigid dogma.
      信仰已僵化为不可更动的教条.
[例] The caste refers to social system based on rigid distinctions of birth, rank, wealth, etc.
      社会等级是指按照血统,阶级,财富等严格区分的社会制度。
[例] It's an exercise which adds a touch of the comic opera to his rigid training routines.
      这一练习给他那刻板的训练程序平添了一份滑稽的色彩。
[例] He's very rigid in his ideas.
      他的想法非常固执。
[例] She was rigid with fear.
      她害怕得全身僵住了。

hostile ['hɔstail]   adj. 怀敌意的,敌对的

[例] I don't like her manner -- she's very hostile.
     我不喜欢她的态度--待人如仇敌.
[例] I don't know why she is hostile to me.
     我不知道她为什么对我抱有敌意。
[例] Let's hope they will refrain from hostile actions.
     希望他们不采取敌对行动。

furious ['fjuəriəs] adj. 狂怒的,猛烈的

[例] If this news ever reaches her ears, she'll be furious.
     这个消息万一传到她的耳朵里,她一定得大发雷霆。
[例] I was annoyed, indeed furious, over what happened.
     出了这件事我很不痛快,实际上是愤怒已极。
[例] She maintained a calm exterior, though really she was furious.
     在外表上她保持着平静,但实际上她生气极了。
[原文] He stared at me again, meeting my eyes with the strangest expression on his face -- it was hostile, furious.
     他又盯着我,用一种很奇怪的表情注视着我的眼睛,看上去充满了敌意和愤怒

inconspicuous [.inkən'spikjuəs]   adj. 不显眼的,难以觉察的
[例] The shy girl tried to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.
      那个怕羞的女孩子尽量使自己不被人注意。
[例] He will drag her off to parties, and she spends the whole evening trying to look inconspicuous in some corner.
      他要把她拉到宴会上去,她整个晚上都试图躲在不显眼的角落。

scent [sent] n. 气味,香味,痕迹   v. 闻出,循著遗臭追踪,发觉

[原文] It smelled like strawberries, the scent of my favorite shampoo.
       它闻起来像草莓,是我最喜欢的洗发水。

odor ['əudə] n. 气味,名声
[例] What he had done put him in better odor.
     他的所作所为使他的名声得到改善。
[例] My room is filled with the odor of roses.
     我的房间里充满了玫瑰花的香味。

clench [klentʃ] n. 牢牢抓住,钉紧    v. 紧握,牢牢地抓住,确定            (page24)
[例] The shape of the coin was imprinted on his tightly clenched hand.
     一枚硬币的形状印在他那紧握的手上。
[例] He clenched his fists.     他紧握拳头.

resent [ri'zent]   v. 愤恨,憎恶,怨恨

[例] I resent the encroachment on my time.
     我讨厌别人侵占我的时间.
[例] I bitterly resent his attempts to interfere in my work.
     我非常讨厌他企图干涉我的工作。
