1979年邓小平访美期间，卡特特意为他在肯尼迪艺术中心精心安排了一场盛大的演出。从加利福尼亚请来了一队职业篮球选手， 在舞台上表演球艺。参加表演的还有著名钢琴演奏家塞金以及乡村歌手约翰·丹佛。最后一个节目是约２００名小学生用中文合唱《我爱北京天安门》。
