1. They want to know what to study, or whether it’s OK to drop out of college since that’s what I did.
They wonder what they should study; they also want to know whether it’s a good idea to withdraw from college since I was a dropout from college.
动词不定式to know有两个宾语,一个是what to study,这是“疑问代词+动词不定式”作宾语;另一个是whether it’s OK to drop out of college since that’s what I did,这是whether引导的从句作宾语,在这个从句中,it作形式主语代替动词不定式to drop out of college。 It’s true that I dropped out of college to start Microsoft.
“疑问词+不定式”结构可以作动词宾语,疑问词包括who, what, which, when, where, how。如: I don’t know what to do. He can’t decide whether to go or not.
2. In my company’s early years, we had a bright part-time programmer who planned to drop out of high school to work. Sentence Paraphrase: In the years when my company had just started, we had an intelligent part-time programmer. He intended to withdraw from high school to work. Structural Analysis: 这句话中包含了一个定语从句who planned to drop out of high school to work,修饰先行词a bright part-time programmer。 High school and college offer you the best chance to learn many things and to do projects with others that teach you about team spirit. In high school there was a time when I was highly focused on writing software. For me, classroom is not the only place where you can learn.
引导定语从句的词如who, that, when, where等叫作引导词或关系词,包括:that, which, who/whom, whose, when, where, why。
3. somebody handing you a book doesn’t automatically start your learning.
Sentence Paraphrase: Somebody hands you a book, but this action itself does not set you into the state of learning. Structural Analysis: 句子主语是somebody handing you a book。 Seeing is believing. John dropping out of college made his parents disappointed Your graduating from college with a diploma doesn’t guarantee your success in career.
