Brothers, you too can go fearl
2010-02-02 9:23

Bow down and envy me, men of the world, because I am a bloke who is comfortable in women's clothes shops. Mine is a state that many men dream of but few achieve and I have not got there without a heady mix of pluck, determination and good old-fashioned hard work.

Fake Loewe Handbags

Once I was like you - afraid of the hosiery and terrified by handbags, likely to come out in a cold sweat if I came within even 50 yards of the entrance to Dorothy Perkins.

Now I bandy about terms around like shrug, gusset and cup size willy-nilly - words that most men would not even dare to utter.

The male fear of the female clothing store goes back centuries and has at its roots two primal terrors. For one thing, we don't understand anything that's in there, and secondly we are afraid we'll be seen by our mates and they will assume that the basque we're looking at is secretly for ourselves.

Most men would sooner go to a war zone than the smalls section of M&S, but I am here to tell my fellow men that like any phobia, the only thing to fear in women's clothes shops is fear itself. Get in there now and YSL Bags browse the all-in-one catsuits, my friends.

Of course, there are ways to ease yourself into the world of female fashion.

The easiest and most obvious is to go shopping with a woman, but even here there are certain rules you must remember.

For starters, stay close to your partner, but no so close that it looks obvious. The worst thing you can do while browsing the Kookai concession is stand within inches of your partner - your fear will be all too palpable.

Secondly, you must be in it for the long haul. To you it may seem obvious that once you've tried on three coats, it's time to go home. But there are more coats in women's
embroidered patches clothes shops than there are grains of sand on the beach, and you must remain patient until every single one has been tried on and rejected.

Thirdly, get to know the lingo. You wouldn't expect your girlfriend to understand the leg before wicket rule without some explanation, so how can you expect to breeze into Topshop and know what you're doing? If you don't know your clutch bag from your culottes, or your sneakers from your snoods, it's time to find out.

Follow these rules and then throw in a heap of self- confidence and you could be like me: happy to be seen in Accessorize, insouciantly buying a handbag without feeling the need to point out that it's a present.
