A moth which has a computer chip implanted in it while in the cocoon will enable soldiers to spy on insurgents, the US military hopes
At some point in the not too distant future, a moth will take flight in the hills of northern Pakistan, and flap towards a suspected terrorist training camp.
But this will be no ordinary moth.
Inside it will be a computer chip that was implanted when the creature was still a pupa, in the cocoon, meaning that the moth’s entire nervous system can be controlled remotely.
The moth will thus be capable of landing in the camp without arousing suspicion, all the while beaming video and other information back to its masters via what its developers refer to as a “reliable tissue-machine interface.”

These include light-intensity and light-color sensors, a passive infrared (body heat) detector, a temperature sensor, and a multiple-axis accelerometer. We have also experimented with the incorporation of audio level detection, audio recording and GPS location sensing into SenseCam. These sensors are monitored by the camera’s microprocessor, and certain changes in sensor readings can be used to automatically trigger a photograph to be taken.

A university spin-off company in Spain is readying an inexpensive Zigbee-based "mote" sensor built entirely with open-source hardware and software. Libelium's 120-Euro SquidBee will ship this summer, optionally with a Debian-based WiFi access point that can bridge Zigbee and WiFi mesh networks.

According to spokesperson David Gascon, Libelium developed SquidBee in hopes of providing a common platform for universities and research centers developing sensor networks. The design is said to be the first Zigbee-based mote with an entirely open hardware and software design, as well as the first to feature integration with an open source WiFi access point.
The SquidBee is based on Arduino, a simple I/O board with 11 digital and six analog inputs. Arduino's design is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license, and the module is said to support sensors that include GPS, temperature, humidity, lightness, presence, pressure or "(almost!) whatever you can sense," according to Gascon.

The SquidBee will be offered in a battery-powered (5-15V) "sensor" model, and a "gateway" model (pictured at left) powered by USB attachment to a host PC running Linux, Windows, or Mac OS.
Additionally, Libelius is currently shipping a Debian Linux-based "MeshLium" access point (pictured at right) claimed capable of bridging Zigbee and WiFi networks.

Using GSN, now you can leave all the nifty sensor network details behind and focus only on the high level application logic. Thanks to GSN's open API, you can quickly write sensor network applications by leaving the tedious task of managing low level hardware dependent details to GSN.
Furthermore, using GSN you can even develop sensor network software exploiting several heterogeneous sensor networks: imagine joining pictures coming from your wireless camera, tag IDs coming from a RFID reader and light readings from two other wireless sensor networks.

地图和传感器网络结合,还是有些应用前景的,比如说车流监控,视频监控等等,大地域的监控,都能用的上,尤其是还显得特别花哨,是很不错的工程类项目的契机. |

motion detection
For our testbed, we have deployed 18 Tmotes to our lab. Some of our Tmotes have PIR sensors visually (or virtually) tracking the people's daily interaction with their habitat and monitoring the indoor conditions. To track the people in an indoor environment, we use PIR sensors. Detailed explanation on our experiments and findings will be available soon.
For motion detection, we connect a passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor to Tmote Sky. PIR sensor detects changes in infrared radiation which occur when there is movement by a person (or object) which is different in temperature from the surroundings. As sensor detects temperature differences, it is well suited to detecting the motion of people by their body temperature. We have configured an analog (Parallax #555-28027) and a digital (Panasonic AMN44121) sensor for our testbed. |

Abstract:
In this work we characterize the energy consumption of a visual sensor network testbed. Each node in the testbed consists of a "single-board computer", namely Crossbow's Stargate equipped with a wireless network card and a webcam. We assess energy consumption of activities representative of the target application (e.g., perimeter surveillance) using a benchmark that runs (individual and combinations of) ``basic'' tasks such as processing, flash memory access, image acquisition, and communication over the network. In our characterization, we consider the various hardware states the system switches through as it executes these benchmarks, e.g., different radio modes (sleep, idle, transmission, reception), and webcam modes (off, on, and acquiring image). We report both steady-state and transient energy consumption behavior obtained by direct measurements of current with a digital multimeter. We validate our measurements against results obtained using the Stargate's on-board energy consumption measuring capabilities.

A node will include a PC that runs the Linux operating system and a couple of gigabytes of flash memory as a hard drive. And instead of using a common low-power wireless-sensor protocol called Zigbee, CitySense nodes will use standard Wi-Fi radios; two radios will be in each node, one for management and control of the network, and the other for experiments. And, Welsh says, virtually any type of sensor will be able to connect to the nodes.
功能为:A first batch of sensors will collect weather data such as rainfall, wind speed, and barometric pressure. Another set of sensors will measure pollution such as the amount of particles in the air. Researchers could use the weather data to understand how temperature or wind speed vary throughout the city, and doctors could use the pollution data to advise patients with asthma to stay away from certain areas at certain times of day. Eventually, more sensors could be incorporated: for example, motion sensors could measure traffic flow, and light sensors scattered throughout the city could monitor parking spaces; the data would be uploaded to the CitySense network.
