The new type of Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT )

   In the 90’ of the 20th, there was only one type of wind-power turbine, the Horizontal Axis Wind-Power turbine ( HAWT ). It has been used to supply the power for the telecommunication stations, the border posts, the inlands and for the countryside etc..

   Later on, many shortcomings were found from the HAWT, such as easily to be damaged, big noise and disturbance to the nearby electrical equipments etc.. In such case, we realized that we should find some new type of wind-power turbine in stead of the HAWT.

   In order to manufacture the better wind-power turbine, in 2001, co-operated with some famous experts for the first class universities, we, Shanghai MUCE Electric Equipment Co., Ltd. ( MUCE ) started the research work on the Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT ). In a period of shorter than one year, we completed the research work and made one sample equipment which passed all the technical tests and finally got the confirmation from our clients including the army. Till now we have supplied more than 60 sets of VAWT to our customers domestically and internationally.

The design principle of the new VAWT

Here we are going to make some detail introduction on the design principle of the new VAWT to meet the needs of our clients.

At the very beginning, the VAWT was of the arc shape of two blades called ф type VAWT. Its area facing the wind is quite small, hence bigger wind power will be needed for starting the turbine. So finally no one was interested in such turbine. We once also tried to make this kind of turbine, but the result was not satisfactory. Some people may ask why at the very beginning no one tried to design the H type VAWT, but фtype. The answer is so simple that a large amount of calculation work was needed for the H type VAWT which was not possible to be done without the modern computer.

In order to meet some special needs, we started the research work on VAWT in 2001 and in the following two 2 years we made a lot of tests and improvement and at the beginning of 2003, our VAWT came into use widely in the islands and in some border regions. And it is also used in the wind-power / solar energy systems.

At present, some companies in the world are working on the research of the VAWT.

Following is the detail technical specification on our H type VAWT:

1.       Technical principle:

In according to the air-force principle and on the bases of the wind tunnel model test, the blade’s shape is of the air plane wing, which will not reduce the efficiency when the wheel is spinning which will cause the change of the blade shape. There are 4-5 blades in equal distance fixed by the connecters connecting the wheel. The wheel will drive the rare-earth metal permanent magnetic turbine to produce the power and then transfer the power to the controller.

This technical principle is based on the slice theory. Practically the calculation will be carried out on the section of the spinning axis of the VAWT model. Note the size of the blade, take “ N “ as the spinning axis distance of each blade using CFD method to do the air-force coefficient calculation. The discrete digital method is used to get the air-force figure of the wing type section, and use the net square method to compare the reymolds member vortex flow

Here the power is produced by using the rare-earth metal permanent magnetic material, by using the wind wheel in accordance with the hole air-force theory and by using the structure of direct driven.

2.       Power feature:

From the principle of the H type VAWT , you will find that the speed increment of the wheel is very fast. (The increment of the moment of force increases very quickly.) So relatively the power increment is also increasing quickly resulting the nice power curve as shown in the drawing. Under the same power, the rated wind speed required by the VAWT is smaller than the present HAWT, besides VAWT can produce bigger power even when the wind speed is low.

3.       Construction:

Because of the usage of the special principle of hole force principle, the connecting way of triangle vector and the structure principle of direct driven, the wind   power will mainly being forced on the wheel. This is why the VAWT is strong in protecting the wind power. The another advantage of the VAWT is its noise-free and less electromagnetism disturbance.

Attachment: Comparison on the present existing VAWT:

      Presently there are mainly two kinds of blade connecting ways:

        A: Horizontal connecting way adopted by some companies. The shortage of such way is the higher requirement on the power transfer shaft, complicated in design and more difficulty in site installation. And on the analysis, the bigger of the power of H type VAWT, the longer of the blade needed. This makes the distance between the middle point of the horizontal connection pole and the middle point of the turbine bigger which will reduce the capacity protecting the wind power. And our triangle vector is the best way to solve the above problems. (Detail comparison is shown in the attached drawing. )

Introduction on the features

of the Vertical Axis Wind Power Turbine ( VAWT )

   The Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine ( VAWT ) is a new product designed on the scheme of wind tunnel force. We started the research on VAWT 5 years ago, almost at the same time as some developed countries in this regard. Now many of the famous experts the world –wide have accepted such new technology and this technology will definitely lead the development of the small and middle size wind-power turbines. Following are the detail features of such VAWT:

Safe in operation:

     Due to the usage of the vertical blade and the force support is of triangle form, the wind force will mainly press on the wheel. So the blades will not be able to fall down, to be broken or to be thrown far away.

Noise:

     The way of the turning of the blades is of horizontal and the design of the blade is of the scheme of the wing of the air-plane, so in operation the VAWT will not make any noise.

Capacity of wind resistance:

     Due to the advantage of the design of the VAWT, the press force the turbine suffered is minimized and as the result such VAWT can stand on the extra strong typhoon of 45 m/s.

Space requirement:

     It needs much smaller working space than other kinds of wind-power turbines. Thus not only saves the space, but also raises the working efficiency.

Power curve:

     It needs lower wind speed for its starting and the increasing of the power is slow and stable. So its production capacity is 10-30% higher than other kinds of turbines.

Scope of the wind power needed:

      Due to the adoption of the new control system, this VAWT is suitable to be used in the wind speed scope from 2.5 – 25 m/s.. It means we can get full use of the wind source and producing more power economically.

Brake system:

      This VAWT is equipped with both the automatic brake system and the handle brake system. The handle brake system can meet the needs to brake the equipment in the area where there is no typhoon and the extra strong wind.

Maintenance:

      The turbine of the VAWT is of direct driven permanent magnetic system, without using the gear box and the direction adjustment equipment, so the routine maintenance once half a year on the connecting parts of the rolling equipment will be enough.

   Shanghai MUCE Electric Equipment Co.,Ltd. ( MUCE ) is a high technology company owning several patents. MUCE is in advance in the fields of new power and telecommunication in China. The key engineers in MUCE are mainly transfered from some military enterprises. Because of this the army issued the Third Technical Progressive Award to MUCE and such products have ben listed as the transferable item from the study stage to the actual production stage announced ty Shanghai Municipal Authority. The patents' noes are No: ZL200420081310.2 for Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) and No: 200720066185.1 for latern shape Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT).
  MUCE has the right of doing import and export and Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) has got the CE Certificate. MUCE has exported its Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) to some countries and regions in Europ, Australia and Asia.
  Now MUCE is working hard on researching the more powerful Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) of 100kw and above. It is expected to have such Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) system at the beginning of 2008.
  At the movement, MUCE is mainly manufacturing the Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) of FDM type with the range from 50kw to 100kw under the patent No: ZL200420081310.2. This shows that MUCE has made a solid progress in making Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) and it also shows that the Vertical Axis Wind-power Turbine (VAWT) made by China is one of the world-wide advanced systems, and it meanwhile shows that a new power source is effectively coming.

                                         Research on the Extra-Size Wind-Power Turbine
    From the beginning of 2007, co-operated with some famous professors of Shanghai Tong Ji University, we,Shanghai MUCE Electric Equipment Co. Ltd. ( MUCE)started the research on the Extra-Size Wind-Power Turbine (ESWT).
    We, MUCE are the first researcher in such field in the world and the unit power of the ESWT is 10MW or above.
    Recently we have successfully fulfilled the first-stage research work and the result is quite satisfactory conforming to our designed requirement made on the model in according to the wind-fore fundamental.
    On the bases of MUCE resisting Vertical Axis Wind-Power Turbine (VAWT), we decided to start the research on the ESWT. We have done an extrmely careful analysis   work on each and every item of ESWT such as on the forming of the parts, the shape of the blade, wind-resistance module of the connection parts, suspension force of the spinning parts, the moment of force of the permanent magnetic turbine, the prodcuction capcity of the permanent magnetic turbine,
the wind-resistant capacity of the whole set of ESWT and the suitability to the sea level of the ESWT and so on. And meanwhile we have also carried out the wind tunnel test on the model. The result is inspiration, not only being satisfied with the designed requirement, but also having rapidly increased the efficiency of power production. And the cost is lower than the resisting Horizontal Axis Wind-Power Turbine (HAWT).
   Our research work has been received the strong support from Shanghai Science Committee and some other government relative orgenizations which is definitely the solid foundation for our further research.
   Probaly, by the end of this year of 2007, the test on ESWT will be completed and the ESWT will come into the use.
   Such ESWT looks like a small size power mill with the designed power per unit of between 10MW and 50MW.It will be possiblly installed on the top of the buildings, along the coast area, in the shallow sea water, in the plain and at the top of the mountains and at the places wherever the wind is avaliable.
   MUCE is willing and ready to do the best efforts to dedicate the new power for the development of theworld.
   We have applied the international patent for the ESWT.
