The organizers of the Beijing Olympics said the second batch of tickets would be sold via a lottery. People will be able to submit their applications between December 10 and 30, said the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG) in a statement, adding that an exact date will be specified later. 这个“压力大”除了“under pressure”之外,还有一个很形象的说法叫“under the gun”。 Everyone at the office has been under the gun since this new manager arrived.(自从新经理上任,办公室里的每一个人都顶着巨大的压力工作。)
Price is hovering between $5 and $8. We regret we have to maintain our original price. Price has declined. Price has dipped (sagged). It simply can't stand such a big cut. Price has tobogganed. Price has plummeted. Price is on downslide. This new product is moderately priced. Articles of everyday use are economically priced. Everyone hopes the price of crude oil would greatly decrease. We've already cut the price very fine. The French price of stainless steel plates are about $1200 per mt, while the German price is still lower. We're ready to reduce the price by 5%. To have this business concluded, you need to lower your price at least by 3%. 3%。 Business is possible if you can lower the price to HK$2150. The utmost (best) we can do is to reduce the price by 2%. We cannot take anything off the price. We've already cut down our prices to cost level. There is no room for any reduction in price. Our rock-bottom price is $500/mt, and cannot be further lowered. (The spirit is willing, but the flesh is week.),也就只好“顺其自然”了。 1. Let be 大家有没有听过the Beatles 的那首《Let it be》?Let be 的意思就是“随它去”,例如:Stop fussing with the tablecloth; let it be. 2. With things as such, we’ll have to let it slide. Be that as it may, I'll leave it as it is.
When investing in a business, he always likes to play a lone hand. The girl was brave enough, but as being outnumbered, she was finally knocked into the middle of next week by the gang. Knock into the middle of next week His idea was good, but he got off on the wrong foot when he started doing it. 这个片语的反义词就是 get off / start off on the right foot,意思就是“有个良好的开端”,例如: It's important to get off on the right foot in this new job.
1. 略胜一筹 be a notch above Be a notch above的意思就是 be better than someone,例如: In oil painting, Mr. Zhang paints better than Mr. Liu. But when it comes to water colors, Mr. Liu appears to be a notch above Mr. Zhang. 2. 很能干 have something on the ball 这个片语的意思是“在某方面非常能干”,也写作 be on the ball,例如: I know Li Ming has a lot on the ball. But I’m not sure if he likes to work here. Her typing is on the ball. He overwhelmed so many of his opponents alone. He’s really something. 那么,应该如何说“不”呢? 2: It is difficult for me to say no and I often end up taking on tasks that I don’t want. A classic sign of a lack of assertiveness is the inability to say no. When you are unable to say no, you lose credibility. You communicate that your time is not valuable and therefore that your contributions are less valuable. When on the other hand you show that you know what you do best and what your limitations are, you exude confidence. This doesn’t mean that you should say no to everything except those few things you really want to do. It means that you should prioritize and gain practice stating why you are not the person for select jobs. When you say no, don’t apologize or over-explain why you are saying no. Take responsibility by using “I’ statements to show where your strengths are best suited. State your reasons clearly and assertively make your request. 即“six of one, half-dozen of the other”。 I say she's a stewardess. She says she's a flight attendant. It's six of one, a half-dozen of the other.(我说她是乘务员,她说她是空姐,这不是一样的嘛。)
Only a fool will believe your blarney. 2. 上圈套 rise to the bait Rise to the bait 的意思就是“be tempted by or react to an enticement”,就好像鱼吃饵一样,例如: Mr. Zhao again rose to the bait set by the guys. We told him there'd be lots of single young women at the party, and he rose to the bait. 3. 唆使 put somebody up to “唆使”就是put somebody up to,例如: There must be someone who had put him up to that. Egg him on 与“鸡蛋”有关吗? 看到“egg him on”,您是不是很迷惑? Egg 在英文字典中被解释为:the hard-shelled spheroidal reproductive body produced by females of animals such as birds, reptiles, fish, etc especially that of a domestic hen. 别着急,egg 还可以做动词用,常见的形式为egg somebody on (to do something),意思是 to incite, urge or strongly encourage sb to do sth 中文的意思就是“怂恿或鼓动某人作某事”。例如: "He wouldn't have thrown that stone if the other boys hadn't egged him on. I didn’t want to do it but Tom kept egging me on. “to give an edge to” 即为 “to encourage”。
英语中有种表达与“五十步笑百步”相对应,叫“the pot calling the kettle black”。 看下面例句: --Here comes the guy who is always late for work. --Aren't you the pot calling the kettle black? You are usually the last person to show up! 白手起家: start from scratch
在18世纪中期,“scratch”被用作体育词汇,意思是“地上划出的起跑线(a line scratched on the ground)”。 看下面例句: --My computer crashed and I lost all of my work. --That's terrible. What will you do? --I'll do it again, starting from scratch. She'll manage very well if you just leave her alone. 如果有人在逗你的狗,你不想他逗,就可以说“Stop teasing the dog; let him alone.” 2. Leave someone in peace Leave someone in peace It's best to leave Dean in peace when he's paying the bills. 用法和leave some along 差不多,但是要注意,leave someone alone 的语气要比leave someone in peace 要强烈的多,有“get out of my face, go away”的意味,而leave someone in peace 则表示“Don’t bother me, give me a rest”。 3. Let be 在昨天的口语中,我们讲过let be 有“随它去”的意思,let be 也可以做“不要烦扰某人”解,意思就是“随某人去吧”,例如有人烦你烦个不停,你就可以说“Will you never let me be?” He feels headache, nausea and vomiting. He is under the weather. He feels light-headed. She has been shut-in for a few days. Her head is pounding. His symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, excessive fatigue, fever and chills. He feels exhausted or fatigued most of the time. He feels drowsy, dizzy and nauseated. He feels as though everything around him is spinning. He has noticed some loss of hearing. She has some pains and itching around her eyes. He has been coughing up rusty or greenish-yellow phlegm. His eyes feel itchy and he has been sneezing. He has a fever, aching muscles and hacking cough. He gets a cold with a deep hacking cough. He has a persistent cough. He has bouts of uncontrollable coughing. He has a sore throat and a stuffy nose. His breathing is harsh and wheezy. He has a runny nose, sneezing or a scratchy throat.
5: It is tough for me to speak up and share my opinions, especially if they are somewhat controversial. When people lack assertiveness, it is difficult for them to share their ideas, especially if they differ from the majority or from an influential person’s opinion. The key to getting yourself to share your ideas is to be clear on what they are and how others could benefit from them. The best way to work on this assertiveness skills is to share your opinions in increasingly difficult situations. You may begin by expressing your semi-controversial views in a conversation with a friend. Then you express your opinions to your direct reports at work. Then you state a potentially unpopular viewpoint with your boss. And finally you express an outside of the box idea in a board meeting in front of your VP.
“以貌取人”在英语中就叫做“judge a book by its cover”。
“Judge a book by its cover”的字面意思是“只看书皮就评价一本书”。 看下面例句: --He dresses in plain clothes and drives an old car. Who would know he is the richest man in town? --You can't judge a book by its cover. 1. 抓住机会 jump at the chance Jump at the chance 的意思就是“(迅速地)抓住机会”,跳起来抓,是够迅速的,比如:When the lead singer became ill, Sheila jumped at the chance to replace her. They offered a large reward, hoping that someone would jump at the bait. When Dad said he'd help pay for my vacation, I jumped at the offer. 2. 见机行事 play something by ear Play something by ear 的意思就是“见机行事”。这个片语来自于演奏音乐,说的是演奏家们不看乐谱,只凭自己的耳朵来演奏,后来引申为“to deal with a situation as it develops and without a plan 随机应变,见机行事”,例如:I'm not sure if I can go bowling or not, I'll just have to play it by ear. You can’t be more stupid! How could you let such a golden opportunity to make big money slip through your fingers? It was an opportunity that comes once in a blue moon. 这里的 once in a blue moon 就是指“千载难逢”。
6: I know I need to promote myself more at work but I dislike marketing myself. Addresses the fear of self promotion It is difficult for most people to self promote and if you lack assertiveness, it is especially difficult. In order to advance in business people must know who you are and what you’re capable of, and you can’t always rely on others to share this information. It is therefore, critical to gain the assertiveness skill of self promotion. The first step in self marketing is visibility. Begin by going out of your way to meet various people in your workplace. The next step is to share your ideas to show people what you have to contribute. The final and most important step is to share the results that you have accomplished. When people self promote with vague generalities they are seen as braggarts, but when you point to specific information, you are simply sharing helpful data. The fact that it benefits you makes it a win-win. As you start to address these six situations and use the tips, you will find that you are outside of your comfort zone. This is a good thing. The key is to take consistent action. Soon you will see not only your assertiveness improve but your reputation and results improve as well. |
