Speed on Ice: Speed Skating and Ice Hockey(2-1)
——Winter sports for those who need speed
The crowd cheers as speed skaters zip around the track. They're racing against the clock, and one-hundredth of a second can be the difference between winning and losing. Hockey players, on the other hand, chase a puck that can travel at 190km/h instead of racing toward a finish line.
For those who love speed, there's nothing like speed skating and ice hockey.
Speed Skating
Speed skating is the fastest human-powered sport in the world, with racers reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h in long-track and short-track competitions. In a long-track race, two skaters race around a 400-meter oval ice rink. They compete in races that vary from 500 meters up to 10,000 meters. Instead of racing each other, skaters compete for the fastest time.
In short-track speed skating, four to six skaters jockey for position and often bump one another as they race several times around a 111-meter oval track. They often fall and sometimes end up with serious injuries. Japanese-American Apolo Anton Ohno, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and a short-track sensation, is an audience favorite.
He looks to speed his way to more gold at the Winter Olympics in Canada in 2010.
