Close your account
When you close your account you permanently delete your registered information (This is information given to Windows Live, including your e-mail address and password.) and credentials (Unique information that you use to access restricted resources. For Windows Live, credentials include your e-mail address and password. They may also include a mobile phone number and PIN, a smart card, or a security key.) , as well as your Messenger contact list and Windows Live contacts. You'll be unable to sign in to any Windows Live sites or services.
To close your Windows Live account:
- Go to the Account Summary page.
- On the navigation bar, click Settings.
- Under Common tasks, click Close your account.
- Verify that the correct Windows Live ID user name appears, type your password, and then click Yes.
Important
- If you manage a child's account, the child's account permissions will be revoked if you close your account.
- If the account you close is associated with any premium services (These are paid subscription based services such as Live Mail Plus that require you to establish a billing relationship with Microsoft) or with a Windows Live Mail inbox, you must cancel the subscription to each service or close your Windows Live Mail account before you close your Windows Live ID account.
- Some of your information will not be deleted. To learn more about this see Microsoft Online Privacy Notice.
You can’t close your account or your child's account
In some cases, you may receive a message stating that you can't close your account or your child's account. This error message may occur for any of the following reasons:
- The account is associated with a Windows Live Hotmail inbox. You must close the Windows Live Hotmail account before you close your Windows Live ID account. If you only close your Windows Live Hotmail account, your Windows Live ID will be deleted 120 days after you close your Windows Live Hotmail account.
- The account is associated with one or more premium services (These are paid subscription based services such as Live Mail Plus that require you to establish a billing relationship with Microsoft) . You need to cancel the subscription to each service before you close your Windows Live ID account.
- You're using Windows Live Custom Domains (This is a service allowing you to create a Windows Live Hotmail account with a unique e-mail address customized to match an Internet domain you own) for your Windows Live Hotmail address, but you're not the administrator for the Windows Live Custom Domains account. Contact the administrator of the Custom Domains account to close your Windows Live ID account.
- The account is an active or disabled Points account.
- The account is a secondary account of an MSN Premium account.
Note
Closing your account permanently deletes your registered information (This is information given to Windows Live, including your e-mail address and password.) .
After closing your account, you will not be able to sign into any Windows Live sites or services.
Closing your account will also delete your contact list for Messenger and Live Contacts.
If you manage your child's account, closing your account will not close your child's account, but it will revoke your child's permissions.
