Ⅰ. Basic Expressions A: Hi, Sue. Who is the tall girl over there? 嗨,苏。那边那位高个的女孩是谁? B: That's my cousin, Mary. Perhaps I should introduce you to her. 她是我表妹,玛丽。让我来介绍你们认识。 relative=亲戚;in-law=亲家;nephew=侄子,外甥;niece=侄女,外甥女;colleague=同事;superior=上司;tutor=导师;coach=教练;roommate=室友;teammate=队友;partner=搭档;buddy=好朋友;pen-pal=笔友;country fellow=老乡 英语中对亲戚的称呼跟中文是有区别的,结婚以后,双方的直系亲属也就是immediate family就都变成了对方的姻亲in-laws,比如father-in-law,mother-in-law,sister-in-law,brother-in-law等等。一看中英文的对照,就知道英语对亲属的称谓比起中文要简单得多。西方人似乎不太在乎这位亲戚是父亲这边的(on the father's side)还是母亲那边的(on the mother's side),一视同仁,给一个称呼。cousin一词不分男女,概括了所有“堂兄弟和堂姐妹或者表兄弟和表姐妹”。而“侄子或外甥”都是nephew;“侄女或外甥女”则都是niece。不过,尽管英语中的称谓不如中文的分工细致,“Blood is thicker than water”(血浓于水)是东、西方人都认同的。 Ⅰ. Haven't we met somewhere before? It seems to me we've met before. You look familiar. 我想不起他叫什么名字了。 I can't remember his name. His name escapes me. escape-被忘掉,逃离 His name doesn't come to me. 很荣幸认识你。 I enjoy the privilege of meething you. I am delighted to know you. I am honored to konw you. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm pleased to make your acquaintance. make one's acquaintance: 熟悉某人,等于get acquaintance with sb. a nodding acquaintance: 点头之交的朋友。 这位就是著名的… This is the famous hip-pop dancer. 这位就是著名的街舞表演者。 This is the noted world champion of 110-meter hurdle. 这位是著名的110米栏世界冠军得主。 This is the world-renowned MVP in NBA. 这位是享誉世界的NBA最有价钱球员。 This is the well-known cyber writer. 这位就是名声大噪的网络写手。 This is the distinguished former president. 这位是著名的前任总统。 This is the celebrated oil tycoon. 这位就是有名的石油大亨。 Ⅱ. Dialogues Dialogue 1. A: Mary, this is Joe's brother, David. 玛丽,这是乔的弟弟,大卫。 B: I'm very glad to meet you. 很高兴认识你。 C: It's a pleasure to meet you. 认识你很荣幸。 B: How do you like Texas so far? 现在感觉德克萨斯怎么样? C: It's really different from what I expected. 和我想象的不大一样啊。 B: Don't worry. You'll get used to it in no time. 没关系,你马上就会适应的。 NOTES 在被介绍后,美国人只有在正式或者商务场合才使用握手的礼仪。 Dialogue 2. Would you possibly introduce me to her? A: Sure. NOTES 服装的颜色五彩缤纷,英语中的色彩表达也多种多样,如朱红vermeil; 玫瑰红rose madder; 桃红peach blossom; 紫红wine; 桔黄orange; 柠檬黄lemon yellow; 米黄cream; 豆绿bean green; 苹果绿apple green; 草绿olive green; 墨绿blackish green; 翠绿jade green; 卡其色khaki; 驼色light tan; 肉色yellowish pink; 雪青lilac; 紫罗兰色 violet; 宝石兰jewelry Dialogue 3. NOTES 表达同学关系的句子: We went to the same school. 我们是校友。 We went to school together. 我们是同级同学。 You are two years my senior junior. 你比我高/低2界。 I am a Peking University graduate/ alumnus. 我毕业于北大。 She is my junior. 她是我师妹。 alummus-男校友,alumni (pl.) B: She's Jane Harris on a lecture tour in Shanghai. She is an expert in computer programming, the dean of Computer College in Washington University. Perhaps I should introduce you to her. 她是简·哈里斯,来上海讲学。她是计算机编程方面的专家,华盛顿大学计算机学院院长。让我给你引见一下。 A: That's great! And I'm only too glad to get to know her. NOTES 在正式场合,任何人可以介绍一方的国际,头衔,职业和专长爱好等等。表示职衔的称谓如:国务委员state councilor,厅长./司长/局长 director/ general of department/ bureau,处长director of division,董事长chairman,总裁president/ CEO,副总经理assistant general manager,注册会计师CPA (Certified Public Accountant),审计师auditor,大学校长president,学院院长dean of school/ college,系主任 director of department,博士生导师doctoral supervisor,客座教授visiting professor,主治医师attending doctor,总编editor-in-chief。 Dialogue 5. A: Hello! B:Hi! A: Lovely day, isn't it? B: Yes, it is. A: By the way, I'm Wang Ming, a freshman majoring in English. B: Glad to meet you. A: So am I. May I have your name? B: Johnson Brown. Just call me john. Oh, my friend is calling me, nice meeting you. I hope I will see you again. NOTES 大学新生 freshman,二年级学生 sophomore,大三学生junior,大四学生senior,在校生undergraduate,研究生postgraduate。
