声明显赫、深居简出的作家凯伦·埃菲尔（爱玛·汤普森）正在写作自己的最新小说。小说的主人公名叫哈罗德·克雷克（威尔·法莱尔），他是国税局的查帐员，过着一成不变、平淡无奇的生活。他住在收拾得规规矩矩的单调房间里，独自走路上下班，独自吃着无味的午餐，从来不幻想未来，也从不因为快乐而大笑。
然而，凯伦并不知道的是，哈罗德真实存在着，像她笔下的人物，他过着无味枯燥的生活。而且一天清晨，正在刷牙的哈罗德突然听见了凯伦小说旁白般的引言，这个声音不仅描述着他的每一个动作、想法，甚至还以精准得可怕的细节详述他的心理独白，这个独白也只有他自己听的见！很快，被逼的发疯的哈罗德便开始上班开小差，常常自言自语，骂天骂地，甚至咨询起了心理医生。
在心理医生的推荐下，哈罗德找到了文学教授朱尔斯·希尔伯特（达斯汀·霍夫曼），在这里，他学会了把自己的生活用悲剧和喜剧分类，也开始尽量过起了自己真正想要的生活。一次意外，哈罗德竟然在电视节目中发现了围绕在头脑中不放的声音，那正是凯伦！而正在“书写”哈罗德人生的凯伦，却终于突破了写作谜团，决定让自己的角色面临死亡！哈罗德能改变自己的结局吗？这奇幻人生到底是真是幻？
It has been quite long since I saw the last English movie, especially for an English major like me, partly because the discouraging speed of downloading of the very movie maybe. I've been interested in the film since I saw it trailer two years before, and only until the very end of last month I finally and triumphantly had the file in my computer intactly. God bless the CNC!
The story naturally turns from a lovely comedy to a sentimental tragedy, and then expectedly, to a touching happy end. I am not sensitive to any director's name except some Asian ones, but now I'll try to remember Marc Forster, who is also the director of Finding Neverland.
