AUSTRALIAN celebrities too busy to walk down the aisle aren't the only ones embarking on long engagements, with many Sydney couples taking years to say "I do".
Popular reception sites are booked years in advance -- one Sydney venue does not have a free spring or summer Saturday until late 2011 -- leaving couples no choice
but to wait.

With some weddings costing up to $50,000, couples are also delaying the big day so they can save for the wedding. Those living together are also in no rush, say experts.

Chief executive of Relationships Australia NSW, Anne Hollonds, said she had noticed that longer engagements and big engagement parties were back in fashion.

Ms Hollonds said the cost of weddings could also be a factor, and also cited greater caution due to fear of divorce.

"Engagement parties mark the relationship as being an important relationship -- any one can just live together but it's getting that extra commitment," she said.

"For a lot of people, getting married means having babies -- you get the mortgage, get married and have babies. So engagements may not be linked immediately to the marriage, they are thought of as quite separate periods. We also want to be really sure about it, to try to avoid the messiness and pain of divorce."

Sydney wedding planner Kathy Apostolidis said her Ultimo business Nightingales was doing more lavish engagement parties that are generally two years before the actual wedding.

"We've seen a lot more engagement parties in the last two years, it has been an interesting development," Ms Apostolidis told The Sunday Telegraph.

"A lot of couples are booked a couple of years in advance for their weddings and they really have to do that because a lot of the key dates in popular venues are booked 18 months in advance," she said.

Time-poor celebrities with clashing calendars such as singing duo Delta Goodrem and Brian McFadden have been engaged for almost two years with no wedding on the horizon due to work and family commitments.

But Sydney counsellor and relationship coach Sonja Ridden said couples who were too busy to get married should stay single.

"If they cannot make time for a wedding, how are they ever going to make the time to do what it takes to make a marriage work?" she said.

A 39-year old man from West Ryde was arrested last week for his alleged involvement in
a drug syndicate supplying ice throughout inner and south-west Sydney.

Seven people were arrested during a simultaneous search of five properties last Thursday
night. Police said they uncovered enough crystal methamphetamine for 63,000 individual
drug deals.

In November last year police officers from Surry Hills formed Strike Force Forsyth to
investigate the distribution of ice throughout the inner city and south-west Sydney areas.

Their investigations led to heavily armed police from the Tactical Operations Unit as well
as officers from the Region Enforcement Squad performing the searches at homes in
West Ryde, Bankstown, Hinchinbrook, and Merrylands.

Police said they seized 3.1kg of ice, with an estimated street value of $3.7million.

Police said they also seized more than 200 ecstasy pills and $40,000 cash during
the raids. They said two Hinchinbrook properties were housing clandestine laboratories.

Acting central metropolitan region commander Stuart Smith said police had put a major
drug distribution ring out of business.

“In just three months our expert investigators have managed to identify and dismantle
what we allege is a significant drug operation peddling ice,” he said.

“In recent months police have targeted alleged drug suppliers operating at a host of
music festivals across NSW, now we are putting the squeeze on their street-level trade
as well.”

All seven people arrested were refused bail and are expected to appear at courts
across Sydney, including Central Local Court, Newtown Local Court and Liverpool
Local Court.

GLADESVILLE Detective Inspector and crime manager Ian McNab has been awarded
the Australian Police Medal, following his long and distinguished career with
the NSW Police Force.

The medal recognises those who have shown diligence and good conduct throughout
their career.

Insp McNab worked on a number of high-profile cases with the North West Region
Homicide Squad before being appointed to Gladesville in 2006.

Insp McNab, who has a sharp memory and the ability to recall names, dates and
facts from even his earliest cases, said he was honoured to receive the award.

Though not one to talk extensively about his successes, he has enjoyed a long and
respected career.

He has worked on criminal investigations with major crime squads, and had a lead
role in the case of the political assassination of MP John Newman in 1994.

Insp McNab said to work in investigations and major cases required dedication and
a methodical mind.

"You have to have a thick skin, diligence, and investigative work is for somebody that
really wants to make a difference and persevere with something until the end result,”
he said.

“You have to be someone who can’t just let things go.”

Insp McNab was also involved in the case of Kerry Whelan, who went missing on
May 6, 1997. Bruce Burrell was eventually convicted for her murder.

It was not uncommon for Insp McNab and other detectives to work days, even weeks
on end trying to solve cases such as this, often with only a couple of hours of sleep
in between shifts.

“It was nothing for us to work on all our days off,” he said.

“The families in cases like that, they look to you and sometimes you’re their only help,
and only hope.

“So once we had a job going, there was that need to find a result.”

That result often took years to achieve, and when trying to describe the feeling of solving
a case, Insp McNab pauses.

“It’s probably ... it’s hard to say how you feel,” he said.

“When you start with nothing and you finally get all the pieces together, and get through
the trials, where we’ve run up to 170 witnesses ... it’s almost a relief more than anything.”

Despite his successes, Insp McNab said there were unsolved cases he still wondered
about.

His mind, which still recalls his first fatality, car chase and arrest, also remembers
the answers which could not be found.

“I investigated two missing nurses who disappeared in 1980, I interviewed Ivan Milat
as a suspect for those, but he denies involvement,” he said.

“They’ve never been found.

“I’d love to know what happened to them, I really would.

“But if all your disappointments came into your work, you wouldn’t stay.”

Insp McNab holds a great admiration for his colleagues, both the senior investigators
he has worked with and the officers under his command now.

“I’ve watched some really good detectives who are just so methodical, they will not
leave any stone unturned,” he said.

“ It’s also refreshing to see the young constables coming through here at Gladesville,
it’s great to see their development.

“These guys are the ones you might not hear about in the media a lot, but they are
the real local heroes.”
