“A leader is a man who has the ability to get other people to do what they don’t want to do and like it.” Harry S. Truman
What is success?
Different people define success differently. I, a future leader, have my own understanding of success. Success comes with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. For a farmer, success can be a blissful harvest after one-year of hard work in the fields. For a professional author, success means the publication of a newly written book. As a future businessperson and leader, I view success as a life-long journey from imperfection to perfection, from unawareness to self-awareness, from manager to visionary and from follower to strategic creator. I view the journey of seeking success as a continuous process of transforming myself from an amateur to an expert---an exhausting but extremely rewarding marathon of self-improvement.
What I passionate about? And what would I most like to do to pursue a path that combines joy and business?
I am always passionate about the moment of obtaining my success. I enjoy the feeling of glistening in my sweat and tasting the sweetness of my success. I admire people who work hard and achieve their success. I believe that the path of searching success is both rewarding and enjoyable. I fantasize about being an Olympic athlete and defeating all my rivals and obtain the gold medal in the applause of my audience. Personally I admire Lance Armstrong as well as his insurmountable endurance and fearlessness. I believe that there is nothing impossible and everyone has the potential to succeed as long as finding a right plan and keep on working. In the business world, Ma Yun, the founder and CEO of www.alibaba.com and www.taobao.com, is my role model in terms of leadership. He and I share a similar entity: an English major. His early careers span from lecturer in college and sales person in a private company. He never had chance to study abroad but he bravely launched his career in the newly emerging C2C market in China. He founded www.taobao.com with money borrowed and defeated www.ebay.com in three years. His secret weapon is to offer no pay solution for both on-line auctioneers and buyers. In Ma’s eyes, free supper really exists in the virtual world of Internet. Now his Taobao and Alibaba combined is the biggest e-business company in the world and successfully acquired www.yahoo.com.cn in 2005. Ma Yun started his business from zero. Unlike his competitor ebay which has all the financial and technological support and a successful business model tested in US market, Taobao was a newly start-up funded by venture capitals and has no governmental supports. He used “Free” to attract millions of people who are formerly ebay’s most loyal customers. With the guarantee of millions of clicks every day, he raised numerous capitals from selling commercial space to support the functioning of the website. Ma Yun has all the best qualities of being a leader and an absolute visionary. He is very eloquent and radiate energy at all time. That is why there were a bunch of intelligent and hard working business professionals working for him without pay at the founding period of his company. He has the confidence to become the number one in the industry even when ebay was dominant the market.
I believe that my passion can be realized in my future career in China. I want to work in the financial analytical field because I have strong mathematical backgrounds and feel comfortable crunching numbers. I like to deal with different customers because I enjoyed working with different customers in my previous jobs. I am passionate about that one day I can be a well-trained financial consultant or analyst and offer my customers the best services and maximum returns from their investments. I think this career choice can properly combine my strengths with my interests. I can maintain my passion and work hard to achieve my goal.
Financial analysts or consultants are still rare in China and the Chinese government just started to gradually open its financial market in the last five years. There are plenty of opportunities and growth for both foreign investors and domestic business people. I want to be a pioneer or probably another Ma Yun in the Chinese financial market. After over twenty years of rapid development, a sizeable middle class is formed and more and more people are not happy about putting their life savings only into a few saving accounts and earning interests. They want to invest but there are very little options for them to choose. Most of Americans are familiar with equities, IRAs and other alternative investments but it is still not common in China. Chinese financial market is just like California during the Gold Rush and I believe that I can find my passion and future there.
Success is associated with many factors. In many cases I believe that opportunities are as important as hard work and deliberate planning. But an opportunity won’t come by chance and it only waits for people who are well prepared. Opportunities are not created equally; they occur only when perfect timing is matched. Smart people won’t wait for opportunities but create the circumstances to generate opportunities. No one can make opportunity happen by actively waiting just like no one can neither predict nor control what will happen in the future. What I can do is to be alert and sensitive to the outer circumstances. “Lucky people” reserve numerous resources beforehand and always are the first to respond to any new changes.
What are my important values?
In my understanding of “value”, I believe that values can’t be described as “what is wrong or what is right in my eyes? ”. I think that values are a set of standards governing every aspect of our behaviors, which can be ethical behaviors in the business world and objective perceptions of this whole world. Developing my own Emotional Intelligence is the most important value in finding my own success. Climate for great performance requires business people especially leaders to demonstrate high level of Emotional Intelligence. I believe that Emotional Intelligence is a perfect benchmark to evaluate my own career and success.
Developing my own Emotional Intelligence requires me to fight against my greatest weaknesses and build up my strength. It is a virtual battle with myself and an experiment full of trials and failures but it can inspire great thoughts if I pay great attention to it. I value the practice of cultivating my own Emotional Intelligence and believe that it is first step in developing personal leadership abilities.
According to the Bestselling author of Working With Emotional Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence is defined as “ the ability for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating we, for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationships”. According to Rick Lash in his article Emotional Intelligence and Leadership, Emotional Intelligence is a complex set of skills and requires time to develop and include seven critical factors in developing Emotional Intelligence:
