Firefox is 4 years old

On November 9, 2004, Firefox 1.0 was released starting Browser Wars II, not just a fancy name, but the sign of active web development users haven’t seen since the web fell in a hole and stayed there for about six years.

2004年11月9日Firefox1.0发布 ，引发了第二次浏览器战争，这不仅仅是一个漂亮的名称，更是一个激起网页开发进入前所未有的活跃阶段的标志，之前整个网络都掉进了一个洞里，并且在洞里一呆就是6年。

Innovation, security, extensibility, web standards, and performance, have been its drivers since day one. It has paid off: 20% global market share, 700 million downloads, a Guinness record, 200+ million users, thousands of extensions, hundreds of themes, 50+ languages.

最重要的是网页不再是一个人说了算，而存在着多种选择，有机的网页可以成长，变化，越来越多样化，最重要的是服务于用户；根据人们的需要，技术的发展和历史的进程进行调整。

Out of curiosity, I ran the SunSpider JavaScript performance test, and found it scored a meager 16,000ms. To put it it in perspective, Firefox 3.0.3 scores about 4,500ms and Firefox 3.1 nightlies are around 2,200ms. Need more perspective? Internet Explorer 7 scored 35,000ms. All tests were ran on an Inspiron 6400 Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 2GB.

出于好奇，我进行了一个SunSpider测试，发现这一版本的成绩基本上在16,000ms的样子。作为参考，Firefox 3.0.3的成绩是4,500ms，Firefox 3.1夜色的成绩是2,200ms。还要更多比较吗？IE7的成绩是35,000ms，以上测试在同一平台进行，平台配置为Inspiron 6400 Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 2GB。（SunSpider成绩数值越小表示浏览器处理JavaScript的速度越快。）

Firefox 1.0 also scored 36 on the Acid3 web standards test. Compare it to 92 with Firefox 3.1 nightlies and 75 in Firefox 3.0.3. Still not that bad I believe for a 4 year old browser.

iGoogle主页上的Sticky Note换成Google自家的记事本了，可以在iGoogle主页上编辑，可以到记事本页面上编辑，还可以在我的诺基亚2630上编辑，用的不亦乐，于是打算谈谈自己使用记事本的经历。
RTM还在我的iGoogle主页上，我非常欣赏那种结构清晰，内容简洁的日程组织方式。

我们做的牛车，还说得过去吧

这篇博文是AOL官方博客上拿过来的，实话说比较恶心，原文 下 方的评论里就有不少人扔板砖臭鸡蛋了。翻出来主要是让大家知道，不光中国有无耻的公司，国外也有。这篇不怎么高明的文章主要意思是有很多很有创意的功能他 们先想到了，用在自己的邮件里了，但是自己的邮件没有火。别人的邮件开始就很火，然后别人也添加了类似的功能，他们就看不下去了。

我个人认为邮件是 非常重要的，特别是像我这样每天收发几十封邮件的人更是重要，速度够快，界面漂亮这些基本要求无论如何都要满足。问题是不是所有的人都能理解这个简单的问 题，比如微软，不是一般的慢，比如雅虎邮件，广告不是一般的烦人，文字格式不是一般的乱，163根本就没有用过，不知道，貌似要点过重重按才能看到自己的 邮件。Gmail到现在为止各方面做的比较均一，有个把功能也比较有特色，比如邮件地址无限扩展功能，以对话的形式显示邮件等。很多邮件不是因为没有特色功能，也不是因 为功能太少，而是在一些基本的细节上做的不好才沦落到被遗弃的下场。Zoho前些天也推出了自己的邮件，基本上现在能有的功能都有了，但是我不会去用，因 为界面不够友好，速度不够快，我注册是为了看看他们的离线功能是怎么实现的。很多邮件人们去注册只是因为这么一点点新的功能，为的是好玩，如果有更好的邮 件添加了这一功能，人们选择的肯定是后者。

所以不要像AOL在这儿抱怨，讽刺挖苦别人，显得非常的没有气度，而是应该反思自己那儿做得不够好，把欠缺的地方补足。

We think it's great that you're using this holiday to pay homage to the one who started it all, who got 35 million people online at once, gave them all email, great content and messaging capabilities, and even created a forum that encouraged them to speak in emoticons.

That costume is fabulous...clearly, the devil is in the details... and what's that you've got there? An "experimental" instant-messaging feature built right into your mail service so people can use it to send text messages to their contacts' phones? We love it – that was such a hit when we first introduced it so many years ago. We tried to make it easy: telling users to simply open the AIM panel in their email type "+1 and the 10-digit cell phone number" into the To: Screen Name box. It's kind of fun, too – good choice!

很显然，这套化妆服简直太棒 了......但是细节就有点那么不对劲了......看看你们提供的都是些什么？一项集成在邮件里的可以向联系人手机发送文字信息的试验功能？我们很喜 欢-很多年前我们推出这一功能的时候确实是不小的轰动。我们还做的更简单：只要在邮件界面里打开AIM栏在收件人里输入+1和10位的手机号码。很好玩是 吧，眼光不错！

And those sidebar options – talk about getting it right... Adding gadgets to email that allow people to manage their calendars, access their favorite content and best Websites? Nice work. The idea of adding a side panel like that was one of our best. Giving people the ability to get to their favorite places on the Web, manage their schedules and IM right from their email home page tripled the convenience of our service. We're sure you'll get lots of compliments.

还有那些侧边栏的内容-策划着把侧边栏放 在右边......在邮件里添加帮助人们管理他们的日历，快捷进入收藏内容和网站的小插件，干得不错。添加侧边栏就是我们最好的主意之一。让用户从他们的 邮件界面便捷地进入他们喜爱的网站，管理他们的日程安排和即时消息大大增强了我们服务的易用性。很显然你们也收到不少好评吧。

Finally, is that an "attachment warning" popping up on your back? Nice touch. We know nothing is more embarrassing than having to send an email twice because you forgot the attachment. Our users love this little reminder, and they have been praising it since we first implemented it back in 2007.

最后，跳出来的是提醒添加附件吧，好眼光。我们也了解因为忘记添加附件一份邮件不得不发两次的经历非常的尴尬。我们的用户也非常喜欢这个小小的提醒，从2007年推出就深受好评。

They say imitation is the best form of flattery, so Gmail, we thank you and we are indeed very flattered. Putting together a costume that is so dead-on could not have been easy, and you've got it down pat. Trying to convince all the other kids at the party that the only thing to use is Gmail and putting out a press release every time you add a new button to the service is just so 1998. We're telling you – this outfit brings back memories!

有人说模仿是最好的恭维，我们非常感谢狗妹，这个情我们领了。把这样一件化妆服搞定不是一件容易事，但是你们做的很好。企图在晚会上和别的小孩子讲狗妹是唯一的选择，每添加一个按钮就开一次发布会的做法真是太老土了。告诉你-这套装备老是勾起回忆。

Here's a tip though... the Web's getting more personal, and people are really savvy at customizing their own services. When you don this same costume next year, make sure you check out www.tunome.com first and add some third party services (see our new Yahoo! plug-in) – you can't be all Gmail all the time any more – it won't be such a big hit next year!

Google家的Chrome浏览器发布时抢尽了风头，一时有取代Firefox赶超IE的势头，但是新鲜感过去之后发现一直默默耕耘不断更新的 Firefox才是最贴心的。选择文字那么蓝的底色让我想起了Windows噩梦般的蓝屏，追求的速度的提升用下来感觉打开网页的速度更慢了，于是乎我又 回到了Firefox的怀抱，相信不少人都做出了同样的选择，但是不少人可能也和我一样，对Chrome那简洁的界面念念不忘。这和现实中选择美女和老婆 的矛盾有几分相似。Firefox也看到了广大用户的矛盾心理，想用户所想，他们其实在Chrome推出不久就发布了一款Chrome风格的皮肤，这里可以下载安装。我在第一时间下载安装了，经过几次更新，这款皮肤确实非常非常的Chrome，但是Firefox工具栏上的按钮一个没有少，工具栏占据的空间依然是那么多。后来觉得这样YY比较没劲，干脆还是素颜一点了，又改回了默认的皮肤。

这并不意味着Chrome模仿秀就此结束，要知道在浏览领域Firefox强大的扩展能力绝对是无人能及，夸张一点说你如果能把一头猪赶进Firefox 重启之后你完全可以收获一大堆香肠，利用扩展实现Chrome的功能根本不在话下。很明显这段时间Firefox的员工肯定也认识到了同样的问题，经过一 番努力和几个加班他们终于在众多扩展中挑出来一个完全模仿Chrome的扩展组合，相信在不久的将来这些扩展完全可以整合成一个。

首先要解决的是最上面的标题条，除了最右边的最小化，窗口缩放和关闭几个按钮外相信大家也没怎么用到地址栏别的什么功能，不能让这几个按钮占据那么大的地方，第一个出场的是Ji Shiping开发的Hide Caption，安装这款插件需要Mozzila插件帐号，还好帐号可以免费申请，重启之后标题栏就不见了。

然后要解决的是加载进度条，这次需要的插件是Zeniko开发的Fission，重启之后会发现默认的页面加载进度会在地址栏里表现出来，调整一下设置还可以在地址栏里显示加载细节。

Firefox默认的菜单是在左上方，但是我考虑到右手使用鼠标，光标在右边的手移动的距离最小，所以把菜单是放在右上角的，不过有些菜单基本上没有用到过，比如文件和帮助，虽然他们占得的地方非常的有限还是要节省出来，于是就有了Milly C.开发的Compact Menu 2了，默认是不减少菜单选项的，自己要根据需要把不用的选项隐藏起来。

到此为止一款由里到外都酷似Chrome的浏览器基本打造出来了，当然还需要定制一下工具栏就完美了，右击工具栏的空白位置把导航工具栏和书签工具栏都隐 藏起来，就是下面的效果了，当然如果把多页面的标签都搬到地址栏的上面，再加上Chrome风格的皮肤基本上可以以假乱真了。我自己认为这样已经挺好了， 用着更方便了，看着也很舒服。


再来看看Chrome里还有什么东西值得搬过来的，智能快速拨号功能，因为有人研究发现我们访问的网页里80%以上都是经 常访问的地址。除了把这些网页都设置成主页外唯一的办法就是书签了，但是为了节省时间书签工具栏给我们隐藏起来了。Chrome会根据访问的频率在新建标 签页里对网页进行排序，边上还有最近浏览的页面的地址表，这个目前还没有发现可以完全模仿的Firefox插件，Fast DialM 勉强有那么一点感觉，但是完全不智能，需要自己手工添加书签，希望不久的将来会更新出来和Chrome一样强大的功能或者出现更强大的替身。Chrome 的多功能地址栏也很值得模仿，地址，浏览历史和搜索统统都可以从地址栏进入非常的贴心，Firefox也有网址输入的建议，但是完全没有Google来的 专业，暂时没有比较完美的模仿者。

Zoho推出支持离线模式的邮件服务了，无论是冲着Zoho的尝试精 神还是冲着简短易记的邮件地址都要支持一把。虽然Google Gears是Google拿出来的统一标准的重磅武器，但是利用方面Zoho总是走在前面，Zoho文字先推出离线模式才有Google文档的离线模式。 这样看来Gmail离线版本的推出也不会太远了。Zoho勇于尝试的精神固然可嘉，但是在很多细节方面做得并不是那么的贴心，速度上慢的估计可以和微软的 热邮有一拼，有时候还存在着界面加载不起来的问题。我现在是把Zoho邮件作为备份邮件来用，在离线的时候可以查看。其实通过Google桌面Gmail 也可以说是实现了离线功能，只是Google桌面检索的邮件没有以邮件客户端的形式出现，只有在搜索结果里看到，多少有些不方便。从我接触到的几种邮件看来Zoho 邮件的界面是最干净的，一丁点不相干的东西都没有，和本地邮件客户端的界面有点接近的。而最乱的就数Yahoo Mail了，虽然用户群庞大，但是那个界面太难看，广告也最扎眼，附件上传非常的不方便也最慢。中和一下就是Gmail了，广告是有的，但是安排的比较合 理，Google家那台专门偷看人家邮件的机器人有时候还真能蒙的出来邮件谈到的大概内容，估计是Google翻译的忠实粉丝，要不它怎么会认识那么多种奇奇怪怪的鸟语的呢。扯了半天，其实就是为了说，尝尝鲜Zoho Mail还是可以胜任的，作为日常邮件来用，最好等他们再把细节完善一下，或者是选择Gmail。

Over the past three years, we launched several new applications in Zoho, but one particular application has been in the background silently making progress during its private-beta stage - Zoho Mail.

Instead of talking about all the features in Zoho Mail, I’ll share the approach we have taken in Zoho Mail and let you explore all the features.

先不谈Zoho Mail的特色功能，我想和大家分享一下我们在开发Zoho Mail时的一些想法，功能如何应用留给大家去发现。

Zoho Mail supports folders (including hierarchical folders) - the ones you are used to. But then, we also see the value of having Labels in your mail client. So we added labels support too. We don’t want to decide what you should use. We want to give you the choice. So we added support for both Folders and Labels.

Zoho Mail支持大家非常熟悉的文件夹功能（包括逐级文件夹）。同时我们也看到了标签在邮件客户端里的意义，我们干脆把标签功能也添加进来。我们不打算决定你应该用什么，我们打算提供给你多种选择。这样我们把文件夹和标签同时添加了进来。

Along the same lines, we noticed that some users prefer seeing a list of their emails serially (Ex: the Outlook style) and some users prefer viewing the emails as conversations (Ex: Gmail style). Again, we don’t want to decide what you have to use. So we support both. In conversations, responses are listed hierarchically so that you can look at a conversation and visually see who responded to whom.

出 于同样的目的，我们发现有的用户喜欢他们的邮件以列表的形式出现（Outlook那种风格）有些用户喜欢看到邮件以对话的形式出现（Gmail的风格）。 我们不打算替你做决定，所以干脆两种形式都支持。在对话模式中，回复的邮件分级列出来，这样你可以很容易的看到哪份邮件是谁发的。

Zoho Mail also has Zoho Chat Integrated. We understand that you spend most of the time in your email app. It is important to have Chat integrated right into it. You’ll find the same version of Zoho Chat integrated with other applications like Zoho Business, Zoho Docs etc.

Zoho Mail also supports Offline mode. This means you can access your email when not connected to the internet. Like Zoho Writer, this functionality is built using Google Gears.

To use Zoho Mail in offline mode, you’ll notice the ‘Setup Offline’ link on the top. You’ll need Google Gears installed on your browser (IE & Firefox are supported currently) to use offline support. Once you permit access, your mails will be accessible offline. You can choose to download images & attachments as well in the offline mode.

Zoho Mail automatically detects your connectivity and switches to online/offline modes seamlessly. While offline, you can view your emails as you would normally.

Openoffice3.0闪亮登场了，因为太出色服务器被挤爆了，现在还没恢复过来。不过要下载的同学可以到filehippo网站上去找，绝对是最新 版本的，下载速度还是非常不错的。那Openoffice有什么好处呢，我自己体会到的就是免费了。其余的优点还没有机会发现，主要是以前的版本对中文支 持太差劲，我总是在发现中文乱码的第一时间把Openoffice给拆了，如是几次之后当然就没有什么机会了解Openoffice好的一面。这次和前几 次一样，先是在Google新闻看到新版发布的消息，兴致冲冲地赶过去下载装好发现打开MSOffice文件还是一样地难看，中文字符全部乱码，顿时没有 了心情。这次还好，中文编码在安装过程中可以选择，输入几个字发现没有变成火星文，这就意味着今天晚上不会拆了它。
离线免费的办公软件还有国产的金山WPS，最近一直在用，比较精彩的功能是多标签浏览，和Firefox如出一辙，那个清爽不是一句话可以表 达的，特别是对于我这种日理万机的人，每天在不同的文档之间切换要节省多少时间啊，还有双击新建标签关闭标签的功能也是非常的顺手。WPS因为功能不像 MS Office那么强大，所以打开文档的速度也非常的令人满意，差异虽然不如Adobe Reader与Foxitreader之间的大，但是就那么零点零零几秒体现的也是风格。MS Office虽然强大，但是一般人用的功能估计不足20%，起码我没有用到那么多，既然用不着干脆就不要在我的电脑里呆着，这样说来WPS还比较占优势。 问题当然也是有的，WPS只提供文档，表格和展示三项功能，基本上包括了办公的大部分内容，但是人家Openoffice还有数据库，还有公式编辑器，还 有绘图。数据库估计用的人不是很多，用到公式编辑器的人应该都呆在学校里，而绘图适用的范围就比较广泛了，但是我很怀疑Opeoffice的绘图功能可以 和同是开源的Gimp相比。这些功能如果恰好用到，Openoffice还是可以应付一下的，起码一致性比较好，说不定还喜欢上了呢，我不会用到这么丰富 的功能，还无法证实这种推测是不是有道理。相比之下，对于一般人来说，WPS在配置上还是占优势的，因为用不到的功能干脆就不要安装。
MS Office因为是商业软件，略过不记了，我承认我不愿意花那个钱，所以干脆也不去用好了。Openoffice和WPS存在的主要问题是自动保存，使用 台式机的同学对每次停电的情形肯定记忆犹新，甚至可以记得自己丢了什么文件，损失了多少字，又花了多少时间才补了回来。有过那么几次惨痛经历的同学肯定知 道要把自动保存时间缩短，默认的是10分钟自动保存一次，最好调到3分钟自动保存一次，写东西的时候时不时地去点保存按钮，生怕一不小心一番心血付诸流 水。个人经验是智者千虑必有一失，保险一点还是把Google桌面装上，当年Google推出桌面的时候扬言只要是你在桌面上曾经看到过的东西他都能找的 出来，根据我使用的经验，这句话有点夸张，但是大部分的时候还真的可以找到，比如N久之前上网的记录，不知道藏在哪个角落的一本电子小说。有了 Google桌面这些离线的办公软件可以在特殊时期不让人感到那么的心酸。
完美地解决这个问题的方案不是离线的而是在线的，在线办公软件比如Google文档和Zoho文档自动同步到服务器的功能都十分了得，我常常 的做法是在Google文档里编辑了什么内容直接把浏览器关掉，貌似不管刚编辑的内容的死活，其实我知道在我编辑的时候Google文档已经把改动的内容 保存好了，事实证明我对Gogole文档的信任是有道理的，到现在为止还没有发生过一起惨烈的文档丢失事件。Zoho自动同步功能类似，编辑功能看起来还 更强大，但是既然能搬到网上去对功能丰富就不是那么重要了，要不还是老老实实用离线软件好了。比较下来Google文档功能更简洁，速度也更快，界面也更 漂亮。

当Google文档和Zoho文档发展到一定程度的时候都开始打离线的主意了，结果先后也都通过Gears实现了离线编辑。因为是在非常初期的阶段，现在 两家的离线功能和在线功能相比还缩水了不少，更不好和WPS，Openoffice一较高下了。离线状态下只能编辑已经存在的文档，无法新建。Zoho离 线的只是文档，Google文档离线可以编辑，表格和展示只能查看。本地的文档也没有办法在离线状态下打开，总之，在这个初级阶段两家都在摸索，如何把离 线和在线完美地衔接起来，如何同步离线和在线状态下编辑的内容等等，所以这一块的未来还会继续精彩。

虽然Gears是Google去年刚捣鼓出来的小玩意，这次在线文档的离线功能倒是先在Zoho Writer上推出，然后才是Google文档。最近Zoho Mail也通过Gears推出了离线功能，我想说的是Gmail据离线应该不远了。

New in Labs: Stop sending mail you later regret

Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together. Gmail can't always prevent you from sending messages you might later regret, but today we're launching a new Labs feature I wrote called Mail Goggles which may help.

有时候我会发一些本不应该发的邮件。比如上次我发短信给一个女孩讲我喜欢她。还有那次很晚的时候我发邮件给前女友说我们还是在一起吧。每次你发这种发过就后悔的邮件狗妹不可能都拦下来，但是今天我们隆重推出一款新的试验功能，Mail Goggles，我写的，在关键时刻可能能帮的上忙。

When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you're really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you're in the right state of mind?

打开Mail Goggles功能后星期五很晚的时候发送邮件之前它会问你是不是确定要发。点击发送之后，做几道简单的数学题，确认你还清醒，估计没有比这更好的解决问题的办法了。


By default, Mail Goggles is only active late night on the weekend as that is the time you're most likely to need it. Once enabled, you can adjust when it's active in the General settings.

Mail Goggles默认只在周末的深夜打开，这种时候你也最需要Mail Goggles。启用之后你可以在常用设置里调整打开的时间。



Hopefully Mail Goggles will prevent many of you out there from sending messages you wish you hadn't. Like that late night memo -- I mean mission statement -- to the entire firm.

Speech Output for Knol Articles

Google added text-to-speech capabilities to some Knol articles, like the one titled “File Formats in Digital Photography”. You can download the MP3 as well as hit a Listen button in the top right. The quality of the speech output – I strongly suppose it’s all a software reading indeed, but asked Google for more background info in any case – is amazing. Macbeach in the comments at Google Operating System writes, “This is the best text-to-speech I’ve ever heard."*

Knol’s help page on the subject explains, “We are experimenting with Audio Playback as an option for some knols, starting with a handful of English language featured knols ... If this experiment is successful, we may make Audio Playback available to more knols in additional languages, and additional features.”

Both text-to-speech as in Knol, and speech-to-text as in YouTube (experimental too right now, and only working with videos of some US politicians), offer the ability to add capabilities to an application which may convince some people to use it just for that feature. Here are some hypothetical use cases for outputting audio in Google’s apps:

• Read out aloud a Google Docs document, spreadsheet, or presentation
• Read a Gmail email
• Read a public domain book scanned as part of Google Book Search
• Automatically translate the audio track of YouTube videos; the parts needed would be transcription (Google already has speech to text in YouTube), translation (Google has machine translation systems, sometimes working OK, sometimes not so well), and then text-to-speech as in Knol
• Read web pages as part of Google Chrome
• Provide audio directions in Google Maps
• Provide the “Listen” widget for Blogspot blogs; this could also be used as a way to create machine-read podcasts
• and more

Google Spreadsheets Redesign

其 实这则消息前两天就看到预报了，今天早上打开的表格还没有发现什么异样，快到中午的时候打开的表格感觉有点不对劲了，最上面怎么冒出来一个黑条，上面写着 表格换马甲了，然后才注意到原来变得和文字处理一样了，还好，反正都用的挺熟的。只是没有感觉到快在哪儿，如果粘贴的内容太多还贴不上去，真是没有天理 的，如果我就处理几个表格还懒得用呢。直接贴不行，迂回一下还是没有问题的，我先保存成本地文件，然后上传，再打开，一个单元格都不少啦，问题是为什么 Google非要我迂回一下呢，还有最近几天在Google Docs主界面新建文档总是有问题，一定要关掉再去新建一次才行，不知道什么原因。

One more step towards a consistent Google Docs interface: Google Spreadsheets has been redesigned and it now includes the same old-fashioned menu like the word processor and the presentation app.
向Google Docs界面的一致性又迈进了一步：Google表格界面经过重新设计，新的的工具栏和文字处理展示的工具栏完全是一样的怀旧风格了。
"We were hoping to accomplish three things with it: make it faster, make it more consistent with our siblings (documents and presentations), and give us more room to add features without clutter," explains Google.
Google解释说：我们希望在Google表格上实现三件事：更快，和另外两种服务风格更统一（文字处理和展示），有更多的空间添加新的功能而不会乱。
The toolbar includes some of the most frequently used features, but I don't think Google did a job at ordering them: for example, the cell formatting options are too prominent, while pasting and sorting have been neglected. It's great that the formulas can be added without switching to a different tab and you can share the spreadsheet without opening a new page.
工具栏包括一些最常用的功能，但是我认为Google并没有花心思去整理这些功能：比如，单元格的格式编辑就有点喧宾夺主的，而粘贴和排序功能就有点被忽略。当然改进的地方是不需要到另一个标签去添加公式了，共享也不需要再打开一个新的页面了。

A very cool new feature is the full-screen mode: press Ctrl+Shift+F repeatedly to alternate between two full-screen views and the standard view. The same shortcut lets you switch to the full-screen mode in the word processor, but you need to press Esc to return to the normal mode. Where is the consistency?
非常酷的一个新功能是全屏模式：同时按下Ctrl+Shift+F可以在全屏视图和标准视图之间切换。这一快捷键在文字处理里面同样适用，只是要按Esc才能回到标准视图。这样也算一致吗？
