The other day, while browsing some logo galleries, I noticed the trend of using stars in logos. I saw all kinds of different companies and organizations who used a star in their logo. It used to be that the main companies who used a star were only entertainment companies or Hollywood companies, but now, I even saw pharmaceutical companies and medical companies using the star.

Character Illustrations

Michael Heald’s character illustrations are very clean, the lines are crisp and the use of color is perfect. He has created his unique style that you can see throughout his different illustrations.

No other art form, in my opinion, can evoke such an immediate response from the viewer. I love to see a person’s face light up upon seeing a new character, its fantastic, and makes every last second of effort worth it.

Websites

Michael also has some great websites in his portfolio. His websites all look great, no matter what the genre of game he is creating it for. As you will see, Michael has designed multiple video game websites, as he is a big-time video game admirer.

I make a valid effort with each and every project to make it better than my last, meaning that I never have and never will rest on my laurels. I will never be satisfied with where I am, and will always yearn to create something better. I believe this is the only mentality to have when you work in design.

Ajax has becoming very popular recently, but most designers seem to rehash the same script over and over (you’ll see it in a lot of Wordpress Themes and Plugins). Perhaps we aren’t using ajax technology to its full potential, myself included. The list below is made up of the best FREE scripts available, they are all of the highest quality and more or less easy to configure. Give them a try.
I have tried and tested the top 22, and aim to try the rest, because to be honest they look pretty cool.

1. Lightbox 2 (http://www.huddletogether.com)

Description:Lightbox is a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page. It’s a snap to setup and works on all modern browsers.
Technology:Lightbox 2 uses the Prototype Framework and Scriptaculous Effects Library.

2.Timeline (http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/)

Description:Timeline is a widget for visualizing time-based events. It is like Google Maps for time-based information.
Technology:Ajax and DHTML.

3. Reflection.js (http://cow.neondragon.net)

Description:Reflection.js allows you to add reflections to images on your webpages. It works in all the major browsers – Internet Explorer 5.5+, Mozilla Firefox 1.5+, Opera 9+ and Safari. On older browsers, it’ll degrade and your visitors won’t notice a thing. Best of all, it’s under 5KB.

4. Pie & Donut Chart (http://www.amcharts.com/pie/)

Description:Pie & Donut (doughnut) is a very universal and fully configurable Flash chart. Using it, you can easily have good-looking, animated pies or donuts on your website. You can also use it for creating elaborate navigation menus.

Description:Plotr is a lightweight chart creating framework. It’s released under the BSD license.

6. Ajax Instant Messenger (http://www.ajaxim.com/)

Description:Ajax im is a browser-based instant messaging client. It can be used in conjunction with community, intranet, and social websites. No refreshing of the page is ever needed for this “web application” to work.

15. Unobtrusive AJAX Star Rating Bar (http://www.masugadesign.com)

Description:This is a rating bar script done with PHP and mySQL that allows users to rate things like can be done on Netflix or Amazon, all web 2.0-like with no page refresh.

Description : There does not seem to be a portable version of Internet Explorer, this is the closest I could find, and it is better. The layout was designed to be more flexible and ergonomic than IE. It even supports (the terribly) few IE addins and toolbars and the list of features and tools in itself are pretty impressive as well.

It’s here! One of the most eagerly anticipated applications for both the iPhone and iPod Touch is here - 1Password.

Regular viewers will know that 1Password is one of my favourite apps for the Mac and I use it each and every day to manage my passwords, my internet identities and also to protect me against phishing scams. Although, previous versions of 1Password offered support for the iPhone via Safari bookmarklets, I’ve been longing for the day when a native 1Password application would be available for my iPhone.

Much to my delight, a few days ago, Agile Web Solutions released a native iPhone/iPod Touch 1Password application via the iTunes App store. What’s really amazing is that the App is a free download!

Accuweather iPhone app provides you with the latest weather information including animated, user-centric radar/satellite with full 15-day local forecasts and 15 hours of hourly forecasts. Plus the iPhone application gives you access to severe weather alerts, forecast videos, lifestyle weather indices, and WeatherAlarms. You can download this app for free in the App Store. Note: AccuWeather also offers users a webapp, that you can get to by opening the url http://apple.accuweather.com/widget/iphone/index.asp from the Safari browser on your iPhone or iPod touch. Enter your zip code for up to date weather maps and a 5 day forecast on your iPhone.

Aurora Feint: The Beginning

Aurora Feint AppThis free app store game is probably one of the most entertaining and addicting games build for the new 2.0 iPhone OS yet. The first version is called “The Beginning”, and what a start it is. Complete with full audio soundtrack, visual illustrations and characters, Aurora Feint is sure to become an iPhone classic. The game is aimed to be an MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) for the iPhone.

Don’t tell me you hate Shakespeare! Or maybe you hate him because you have never read his plays before. Well, now it is a good time to do that. This awesome application lets you view and read all Shakespeare plays and sonnets with a push of a button. Now, I can enjoy Othello (my favorite play) as many times as I want and wherever I go. Extremely handy for those who are taking Shakespeare classes this upcoming semester.

Amazon.com today announced its Amazon application for iPhone and iPod touch is now available on the Apple App Store. The Amazon app offers an easy way for users to search and browse for products offered by Amazon and thousands of retailers, access Amazon’s popular shopping features such as Customer Reviews, and purchase using 1-Click Shopping and Amazon Prime.

Ditch iTunes with Floola

Windows/Mac/Linux (all platforms): Floola, the go-anywhere, no-iTunes-required iPod manager, has updated with some nifty new features, including the ability to natively sync your Google Calendars to your iPod.

We’ve been into Floola for some time now, ever since discovering that it was the ultimate solution for adding music and movies to your iPod from any computer, whether or not you were down with iTunes. The latest versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux (GTK2 required) add Google Calendar importing, plus a few bug fixes and optimizations sprinkled throughout.

Bloomberg

The Bloomberg app lets you read the latest financial news headlines, world market updates and stock quotes, charts and news on your iPhone 3G. You can enter you own stock portfolio to track in the app on a regualr basis. Find stocks by entering company names.

Rotate your iPhone to view the stock charts in full view and tap the screen to view charts in various timelines like 1 day, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year and 5 years. Industrial averages such as the Dow Jones or NASDAQ offer industry moves and stock movers in table or chart format. Overall a very powerful and impressive finanacial app, and the free pricetag won’t hurt either. Great alternative to the native Stocks app.

Body Mass Index

The Body Mass Index(BMI), is a controversial statistical measurement which compares a person’s weight and height. Though it does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it may be a useful tool to estimate a healthy body weight based on how tall a person is. Due to its ease of measurement and calculation, it is the most widely used diagnostics tool to identify weight problems within a population, usually whether individuals are underweight, overweight or obese.

Dead Simple iTunes Library Recovery with iPod -> Folder

Windows and Mac OS X only: Freeware program iPod -> Folder allows users a super-simple way to do a full backup of their iPod on any Mac or Windows computer.

We’ve actually posted a few methods for backing up your iPod in the past, but iPod -> Folder is a nice standout both for its simplicity and is Windows and Mac versions. The downside is that iPod -> Folder doesn’t allow you to selectively backup music, so it’s an all-or-nothing affair. That said, this is a great little app to download and stick on your iPod so you can easily “back up” your music at any computer. Thanks Rory! — Adam Pash

I’ll admit that when I first started trying out Instapaper, as a quick and dirty “bookmark this for later” web service, I didn’t see that many advantages to it. There’s delicious.com for bookmarking and Evernote for saving clips and PDFs; NetNewsWire for following my preferred sites… I felt like I had the bases covered. Sure, Instapaper was fast and dead easy (you would expect as much from Marco Ament, lead developer at microblogging service Tumblr), and having a personal ‘newspaper’ page of items to review at leisure was nice, but nothing earthshaking. Then, wouldn’t you know it, everything changed.

Joost started out as a desktop application, was quickly overshadowed by online offerings like Hulu, then recently moved to the web in an attempt to keep up with the competition. With its new iPhone/iPod touch application, Joost is back in the drivers seat, beating the likes of Hulu to Apple’s popular mobile devices. Joost still doesn’t offer as much popular content as Hulu, but its 46,000 videos—which include 400 TV series, 1,200 movies and short films, and 18,000 music videos—are a pretty good start.

It took me a little while to ‘get’ DesignMeltDown, I think because its not as immediately visual as some of the other galleries around, but I figured 5000 subscribers couldn’t be wrong, and I was right… about being wrong that is. DMD has a LOT of websites listed but also includes jobs, tutorials and other goodies.

They’ve been around since, like forever, spawned conferences around the world, a magazine and plenty of immitators. They’ve also managed to avoid redesigning their site for half a decade *hint*. Still DesignIsKinky continues to bring quality art/design to a screen near you.

Out of all the sites listed here, this is probably the most innovative. By pairing up words set in semantic structures taken from real slogans with related images piped through from Flickr, the Ad Generator is disturbingly good at generating clever little adverts. Made as a Masters Thesis project, I can only hope that Alexis Lloyd (the site’s creator) absolutely dominated his course that year.

44. Ask questions

Interaction is what web 2.0 is all about. Sometimes all you need to do is communicate, that’s what Twitter, Blurtit or Yahoo Answers are for. I often ask my Twitter followers when I’m looking for ideas for a blog post. You can even take this further by using services like Twittpoll. People will most likely be happy to help you out, they are usually glad when they can show their expertise.

45. CampaignMonitor.com/Gallery

Think email marketing is all ugly? Think again. CampaignMonitor - which is a neat email sending web app - hosts a gallery of some really lovely email marketing, ordered up into type and layout for your perusal needs.

46. Search for keywords on social bookmarking sites

It is no secret that people bookmark webpages that they find inspiring or useful, thus searching social bookmarking sites is a great way to find inspiration. In my opinion, Delicious and Stumbleupon are the best places for designers to find inspiration, obviously because they are the most used by other designers. In Delicious, you can perform searches by tags, then narrow you search within this tag. Another great way to make the most out of Delicious is to find power users and browse their bookmarks (for example Adobe).

For Stumbleupon, you’ll find inspiration for sure by stumbling the Graphic design, Drawing or Fine Arts categories. For more specific topics, just search for a keyword and stumble pages tagged with this keyword.

47. Browse Flickr

Flickr by itself is just a good social photo site and isn’t so helpful to find inspiration. What makes it really amazing are the cool mashups that have been created around the website. My favourite mashup is by far the color palette generator that allows you to extract colours from one of your Flickr photos. Another Flickr related colour mashup is available on the Multicolr Search Lab , where you can look for interesting pictures that contain specific colours. If you simply want to search images more efficiently, take a look at Compfight.

48. Browse image bookmarking websites

Design bookmarking sites are probably the most popular among designers. My favourite is by far FFFFound, a social media site where selected designers (you must be invited to get an account) share designs they loved around the web. One of the best features about the website is its keyboard based navigation. Other great image bookmarking networks are Dropular, Typeish, We Heart it or vi.sualize.us.

For typography lovers, John Boardley, the author of “I Love Typography “, created with a friend “We Love Typography“, an bookmarking website targetting specifically typography related stuff. You will for sure find a lot of inspiring design work there.

49. Watch conferences

One great resource for inspiration is to listen to inspiring and successful people, watching conferences is a good way to do that. TED is the best conference for people looking for anything related to design, entertainment and technology. They bring every year brilliant speakers and share talks on their website. Another good source for design speeches is the AIGA video section, where they put videos of conferences organized by the association. Last but not least, Talks@Google offer a wide range of inspiring talks, most are not by designers but are still interesting.

50. Read blogs

This can sound like obvious advice, but it has to be mentionned as blogs are one of my biggest inspiration sources. There are two types of blogs that I find better to find inspiration: people who share designs that they like, for example Design You Trust or Smashing Magazine, or tutorial blogs like NetTuts or PSDTuts.
