London practice Amanda Levete Architects have completed the facade of an office building off Oxford Street in London.

Located at 10 Hills Place, the project consists of four glazed slashes in the aluminium surface, funneling light down into the offices.

The architects drew on technology normally used to build ship hulls.

Photographs are by Gidon Fuehrer.

Here’s some more information from Amanda Levete Architects

–

Work on 10 Hills Place is now complete.

Amanda Levete Architects has harnessed high quality ship hull technology to create an ingenious sculptural facade for a new office building just off London’s Oxford Street.

Lack of daylight in the narrow streets around this major retail artery was a key issue. Inspired by the art work of Lucio Fontana AL_A slashed the aluminium skin with large glazed areas orientated towards the sky to maximise and channel natural light into the office space.

The facade is fabricated using curved aluminium profiles assembled on-site. Self cleaning glass and hidden gutters within the eyelids ensure the facade remains low maintenance.

The fine faceting of the aluminium strips creates beautiful and complex reflections of sky and street, making the building highly visible from Oxford Street.

At ground level a bespoke glass, mesh and dichromatic film sandwich is animated with fibre optics to create visual depth of field and a dynamic moiré pattern on an otherwise blank facade.

Laboratory for Visionary Architecture (LAVA) have won a competition to design the urban centre of Masdar, a zero-carbon, zero-waste city to be built in the desert near Abu Dhabi.

The centre will feature giant moveable sunshades based on sunflowers (above) that shade a public piazza, plus hotels, retail and leisure facilities.

Masdar, which will cover 6 million square metres when complete, is based on the urban layout of ancient walled cities and aims to provide a blueprint for sustainable urban development.

See our story from March 2007 about the launch of Masdar, which is masterplanned by architects Foster & Partners.

Here’s a full explanation from LAVA:

–

LAVA wins international design competition for the heart of Masdar, world’s first sustainable city

Giant umbrellas, with a design based on the principles of sunflowers, will provide moveable shade in the day, store heat, then close and release the heat at night in the plaza of a new eco-city in the United Arab Emirates.

The ‘sunflower umbrellas’ are one aspect of the winning design by the international practice Laboratory for Visionary Architecture [LAVA] for the city centre for Masdar in the UAE - the world’s first zero carbon, zero waste city powered entirely by renewable energy sources.

Masdar is a planned city located 17 kilometres from Abu Dhabi. A government initiative, the city is being constructed over seven phases and is due to be completed by 2016.

The city centre includes a plaza, five-star hotel, long stay hotel, a convention centre and entertainment complex and retail facilities.

LAVA won the design in an international competition against several hundred entries and strong competition from some of the world’s most high profile architects.

LAVA was founded in 2007 by Chris Bosse, Tobias Wallisser and Alexander Rieck and has offices in Sydney, Stuttgart and Abu Dhabi.

Chris Bosse said: ‘Masdar City is the world’s most prestigious project focusing on sustainable energy design. It is the city of the future and a global benchmark for sustainable urban development. We believe in the Masdar slogan “One day all cities will be like this”’.

The solar powered ‘sunflower’ umbrellas capture the sun’s rays during the day, fold at night releasing the stored heat, and open again the next day. They follow the projection of the sun to provide continuous shade during the day.

Mr. Bosse said: ‘the sunflower principle is eco-friendly and can be adapted to anywhere in the world – it opens opportunities for outside living, even in the desert’.

Mr Rieck added: ‘The entire city is car-free with a magnetic public transport system includes individual pods that drive you to your destination using solar power’.

Some other key innovations of the winning plan include:

• Building façade angles that can be altered to offset or optimise solar glare.
• Materials on wall surfaces respond to changing temperatures and contain minimal embedded energy.
• Water features can be stored underground during the day and at night trickle or flow strongly, triggered by passersby.
• Interactive light poles, inspired by the oasis fire, transform the plaza into a 3-dimensional interactive media installation.
• Interactive, heat sensitive technology activates lighting in response to pedestrian traffic and mobile phone usage.
• Roof gardens integrate food production, energy generation, water efficiency and the reuse of organic food waste.

Mr Wallisser said ‘the idea behind our concept is the use, inspiration, and adaptation of nature and our plans combine innovative design and sustainability’.

East and west are fused in the plaza design inspired by both the oasis, as the epicenter of Arabic nomadic life, and the iconic piazza of historical European cities. The organic forms created by the forces of natural erosion in geographical landmarks such as great canyons and wadis are the design inspiration behind the key buildings in the city centre.

After winning stage 1 in January this year, LAVA teamed up with the Sydney/Dubai based Kann Finch group, engineering firm Arup (with whom Chris Bosse previously worked on the Watercube in Beijing), Transsolar (worlds leading energy consultancy), and a team of international experts.

Here’s some more information from Josef Weichenberger Architects:

–

In September, 2004, BIG together with Viennaer Heim Wohnbau GesmbH decided over the allocation of the project for the partial construction on the area of “Campus Sensengasse”. The submitted projects of the 5 participating architect groups were evaluated in two jury meetings. Only “young” architects were allowed to take part in this project. The public were represented by district mayoress Martina Malyar and via a member of Agenda 21.

Those invited were:

Johannes Kaufmann Architektur

SYNN architekten

Mascha & Seethaler Architekten

SCHAUER SCHLÄFER SCHMOEGER

JOSEF WEICHENBERGER_architekten und ROOM8 ARCHITECTS

Terms of reference for the project:

concept under the premises of university usage and residential use in the manner specified.

economic plausibility in terms of Wohnbauförderung (housing subsidy).

integration of a Fitness centre.

optimal positioning of the structure with regard to minimal possible noise emissions.

a high degree of non-built areas.

careful handling of the available green areas and the existing trees.

the development of innovative concepts for the greening of the building itself.

the creation of a connection to the Arne Carlsson Park.

The project from the architects of “JOSEF WEICHENBERGER_architects” and “room8 architects” was unanimously chosen by the jury during their last meeting on 5th November, 2004.

The situation

The urban environment of the plot is influenced by a perimeter block development along the Sensengasse coming from the Northwest which in the area of the construction site abruptly moves over to a green area used for sports that has a large stock of trees along the Sensengasse.

At the crossroads of Sensengasse and Spitalgasse, the office building Haus der Forschung (“Research House”) (BIG) is projected. In the southern continuation there is a strip of land with an adjoining building belonging to the old general hospital. There is a sports ground in the western area that is planned to be re-designed in the same size and shall have an underground car park and an underground sports-hall built beneath it. In the bordering area to the north, there is the Anne Carlson Park, as well as a primary school with children’s day-care facilities.

The urban planning concept

The proposed project responds to the described situation with a linear building structure along the Sensengasse and a free-standing, “point-house” positioned in an extended park. The linear construction, composed of three connected individual buildings, creates a membrane-like break between the park area and the urban space. In doing so, particular attention has been paid to permeability with paths and visual connections in the direction of the park on the one hand and the partly two-floor ground floor area forms part of the open urban space.

These spaces with their views upon the surrounding greenery create a “green break” in association with the untouched and completely preserved tree avenue in the Sensengasse which fuse the façade of the garden and the airy opening of the “vertical green” together with the park to form one organic whole.

The row of trees along the Sensengasse is taken up into the arrangement of the individual structures, so that the project reacts with sensitivity to the existing tree stock. The green area does not end at the perimeter of the property. Instead, it interweaves with the planted greenery of the old hospital, the sports ground and the school.

Through the combination of a sensible development together with an eventful layout of paths through the area, it was possible to maintain the quality of this urban recreational area. The free-standing point house marks the construction’s boundary to the northwest and stands, as a result of the now clearly defined park perimeter, literally in the middle of greenery.

The architectural concept

The three structures along Sensengasse consist of:

the University building with a central developed core;

the middle construction which provides for office space at and below ground level, as well as residential property on the floors above;

and a building at the head which due to its pushing formulation and open, two-floor ground floor zone symbolically creates the function of an entrance into the park and sport landscape.

The arrangement, structure and conception of these buildings create great variety and a combination of residential types with different open and green spaces such as floor, roof and façade gardens on the one hand and the optimal amount of illuminated façade areas.

The treetops along Sensengasse are “close enough to touch” for many of the apartments and create protection from both dust and noise at the same time. The algorhythm of the formal concept is based on the sequential staggering of 2 floors which are brought together to form a unit on the one hand and the spatial intertwining of angular-shaped elements.

The alternating forward and backward bounds in connection with the opening of the construction create the effect of spaciousness and intricacy of design which make it possible to bring light and air deep into the building. In this way, smaller B-types can also be exposed and “pointed through”. The modularity of this system, when consistently applied, enables a high variability in the configuration and amalgamation of the individual apartments to be achieved, and that in all three dimensions – side by side, behind one another, and above each other in the form of maisonettes. In the end, it is exactly these irritations of the system which disintegrate the structure’s large form and bring it to life.

Furthermore, there lies an additional quality due to the interesting views made possible through the exposed perimeter. The apartments are arranged so that between 3 and 6 apartments can be entered on each floor with a central, but still naturally illuminated, staircase which creates interesting views and light effects through the various indentations.

The “point-house” is to be found in the park and has been designed in such a way that the apartments demonstrate various sizes and combinations. Among them are single-storey and maisonette types which are suitable for differing generations as well as loft apartments in various sizes.

Great value has been placed upon the creation of private greenery in the form of two-storey integrated gardens as well as hanging façade greenery. The roof areas are allocated to the apartments below by means of roof gardens, terraces and atria. Furthermore, it is planned that there shall be green areas on the roofs of the buildings along Sensengasse available for common use.

The entry and administration area can be found in the plinth area of the university building.

Two institutes share the property; the institutes for Education and for Languages together with a two storey library on the lower floors.

The other two buildings along Sensengasse belong to the OeFSE (Austrian Research Foundation for International Development).

The façades which face the street provide strongly contrasting views into and the through the office landscape together with its generous two-storey air spaces.

Through the spatially lower open space on the parking side and the chosen slanted glazing towards the “green”, this area is actively integrated both optically and physically.

The view from the street into the “green” stretches across a large part of both residential buildings.

Russian architect Peter Kostelov has refurbished an apartment in Moscow using industrial materials.

The project involved dividing a studio apartment to create separate spaces.

Kostelov used metal throughout the interior, with visible welding and a raw aesthetic.

Photographs are by Zinon Razutdinov.

Here’s some more information from Peter Kostelov

–

Apartment

Earlier it used to be a studio apartment; practically it was a one bedroom apartment. After reconstruction there came out a few more separate rooms: a spacious living room, a bedroom, study room, library, two wardrobe rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a lavatory and shower for guests.

All these were placed around the space of 86 sq. m. As a result a bedroom and a kitchen became far smaller, hence the living room bigger, therefore the space left worked well for a wardrobe room, adjusting to a bedroom as well as for many other places. Besides the ceiling was lowed giving space for an entrance to store house hold things.

The open space with a column in the center was filled with a frame made of steel tubes. The frame hasn’t been trimmed with any decorative materials except of metal cover, which can be easily replaced by wood, stone, paper wall, cart or whatever. The conception goes first and stays the same.

How the idea of a module works. 2,8 m ceiling conventionally divided by 4 is 0,7 m. pace which can be accepted as a module for a spatial interior design. For instance: 0,7 m times 3 are 2,1m, it’s the height of the doors and entrance location; double 0,7 m is the height of display cabinet unit in the living room, 0,7m times 4 is for bookshelves.

The principle of a module works and is traced all around the apartment. For me it was a matter of an utmost desire to create an indivisible architectural design. Practically it is deprived of any decorative elements. The most essential of it is the functional purpose of a design together with the principle of unities of all the elements of the space.

Viewing Tower by Ateliereen Architecten　观景台设计

http://hi.baidu.com/qiushi85/blog/item/306f807a355df7e42f73b308.html

Here’s some text from the architects:

–

In the Netherlands over 50 spots are marked on the map as starting points for recreational use of the rural landscape.

People are encouraged to park their cars at these locations instead of at other, more preserved, areas. From here they can explore nature by foot, mountain bike, horse etc.

In the small town Reusel, the nomination motivated a local sports merchant to found an outdoor sports park.

A tower, 25 meters high, with sport facilities like climbing and abseiling is the main attraction. It consists of six cubes, hanging on a core of steel columns. Straight flight staircases raise in between and cross the cubes several times in different positions.

Two of the six cubes are accessible. The third one is the start platform for a rope slide and a high rope track. In the top box people can enjoy a panorama view of the surrounding landscape and there is a starting platform for abseiling.

The athletes on the 13 meters high climbing wall are observed by visitors of the adjacent bistro.

Huge stacks of logs can be found in the surrounding production forest. The cladding of the tower consists of the same halved, stripped logs. This way it is an addition, as well a product of it’s surroundings.

The climbing of the stairs is a surprising experience, because of the different intersections of stairs and cubes and the varying directions of the cladding.

The use of wood makes the object fit in it’s setting. The orthogonal (unnatural!) shapes on the other hand create an exciting composition.
阅读全文
