New contest for 7 wonders of nature
The contest to name the new seven wonders of the world is over, and the contest to name the new seven wonders of the nature is underway.
The Great Wall topped the list of the new Seven Wonders of the World announced on July 7th at a ceremoney in Lisbon.
Also making the grade were Brasil's Statue of Christ Redeemer, Peru's Machu Picchu, Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid, Jordan's Petra, the colosseum in Rome and India's Taj Mahal.
The sites were selected according to a tally of around 100 million votes cast by people around the world over the Internet and by cell phone text messages, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll said, making it the biggest online vote ever.
The Great Pyramid of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, kept their status in addition to the new seven.
The compaign to pick the seven new wonders was begun in 1999 by swiss adventurer Bernard Weber. His Switzerland-base foundation,called New 7 wonders, received some 200 nomination from around the world and then narrowed the list to 21 condidates for the public to vote on.
Among the sites that did not make the final list of seven wonders were the stature of Liberty, Britain's Stonehenge and Paris' Eiffel Tower.
Weber has now begun a new compaign to choose the new seven natural wonders of the world.
The New7wonders organization will accept nomination for the new list through August 8, 2008, and will then narrow those nominations down to 21 for the public to vote on. Examples of wonders that would be eligible include animal reserves, canyons, fjords, coastlines, cliffs, forests, glaciers, mountains, deserts, oases, reefs, seas, lakes, rivers and waterfalls.
The United Union Educational, Scientific and Cultral Organization, or UNESCO, maintain its own list of World Herritage sites and distanced itself from the seven wonders balloting, saying it reflected only the opinion of those who voted.
Organizers of the contest concluded that there was no foolproof way to prevent people from voting more than once for their favorite. They claimed votes came in from every country in the world.
Except for Egypt's Pyramid, all the other architectural marvels on the original ancient list of seven wonders have vanished. They were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon,the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the colossus of Rhodes and the Pharos lighthouse off Alexandria in Egypt.

Rescue crews said none of the 175 people on board the Airbus A320 were likely to have survived according to Sao Paulo State Gov. Jose Serra. Brazilian news agency Folha quoted the leader of a rescue as saying there could be 200 people dead, including casualties on the ground.
The Tam airline's Airbus 320 slid off the runaway at Congonhas airport in a driving rain, then crossed a busy road at the height of rush hour in South America's largest city before slamming into a gas station, said Jose Leonardi Mota, a spokeman with airport authority infraero.
A witness said he saw once charred doby as flames shot into the sky and clouds of black smoke billowed into the air after crash.
" I was told that the temperature inside the plane was 1,000 degrees(Celsius), so the chance of there being any survivors are practically nil", Sao Paulo State Gov. Jose serra told reporters at the airport. The temperature in Celsius translates to about 1,830 Fahrenheit.
Tam worker Elias Rodrigue Jesus, walking near the site just the crash happened, told the Asscociated Press that the jet exploded in between the gas station and a warehouse owned by Tam.
"All of a sudden i heard a loud explosion, and the ground beneath my feet shock, " Jesus said. " I looked up and i saw a huge ball of fire, and then i smelled the stench of Kerosene and sulfur."
Distraught relatives of passengers crowded Tam's check-in counter in Porto Alegre, complaining hours after the crash that the airline had not yet released a passenger list , Globo TV reported.
The accident happened during heavy rains, and critics have said for years that such accident was possible at the airport because its runaway is too short for large planes landing in rainy weather.
A federal court in February briefly banned takeoffs and landing of large jets at the airport because of safety concerns at the airport, which handles huge volumes of flights for the massive domestic Brazilian air travel market.
But an appeal court overruled the ban, saying it was too harsh because it would have severe economic ramifications and that there were not enough safety concerns to prevent the planes from landing and taking off the airport.
Tuesday's crash came 1- months after Brasilian dealiest crash, a September collision between a GOl Aerolinhas Inteligentes SA Boeing 737 and an executive jet over the Amazon rainforest.
All 154 people on the Gol jet died. the executive jhet landed safely.
