HISTORY OF ORCHARD ROAD
0rchard Road is located in the heart of Singapore , just above the Central Business District .It stretches from Tanglin Road to Bras Basah Road, although it has been observed that 0rchard Road traditionally ends in the Dhoby Ghaut Area.
Unlike many roads in Singapore,0rchard Road was mot named after any particular person.Instead,0rchard Road got its name from the many nutmeg and pepper plantations that lined the street during the 1840s. Thinly populated, only residents were plantation owners like Scotts, Cairnhill, and Cuppage, whose namesare familiar as street names today.

There were no houses to the south of 0rchard Road. As the city developed and progressed inland from the Padang area, the plantations in 0rchard area , the plantations in orchard area gave way to residential development. Many private houses, mainly bungalows of the old peranakan style, began to dominate the Scotts Road and Tanglin Road and areas. Shophouse developments were built in the orchard Road and Somerset Road areas closer to Dhoby Ghaut as the city grew.

In the 1900s,a mysterious disease swept through the nutmeg plantations, wiping them out within a year. At the same time , commercial developments began at 0rchard Road. This signalled the evolution of 0rchard Road into the vibrant commercial district of today. In1917, the Singapore Cold Storage Company opened a store to distribute food supplies. Cold storage was also the first supermarket to introduce ice-cream to Singapore. The 0rchard Road Market provided fresh produce for the residents. Motor workshops sprouted around the Kramat Road area to service the growing number of vehicles.

In the 1950s ,CK Tang opened a departmental store at 0rchard Road. The coffee shops and hawker stalls at Koek Lane were favourite eating places.

Through the 1960s and into 1970s, entertainment centres such as Lido Cinema, 0rchard Theatre, Raffles village and Jackie’s Bowl were opened. Eating places such as Cairnhill Steak House, Pavilion Steak House, Mont’dor Café were popular with Singaporeans and expatriates alike.

In the 1970s through the 1980s, development intensified. Hotels such as Forum Inter-Continental, Ming Court, Mandarin and Hilton were built to serve the booming tourist industry in Singapore. Huge departmental stores such as Plaza Singapura, Far East Shopping Centre and Centrepoint were built to reinforce Singapore’s as the emporium to the world. Brick by brick, and block by block, towers of glass and steel line what used to be mud-tracks to make 0rchard Road the upbeat lifestyle hub it is today.

ORCHARD ROAD TODAY
The 0rchard Road of today is a rich and exciting experience to delight the senses, bustling with a vibrant mix of East and West. It glistens with new towers of steel and glass, glittering examples of the things that Singapore has to offer. Yet 0rchard Road never forgets its botanical roots ,with leafy Angsana trees and lush landscaping lining the walkways, exuding a shade of tropical romance.

Shopping
Singapore never fails to live up to its name as an emporium to the world. Desinger labels from Europe are displayed next to the exotic fare of Asia. Designer boutiques, local and international department stores, specialty shops and bargain bazaars compete for the visitor’s affections.

Festivals and Entertainment
World-Class entertainment, arts and cultures from around the globe inter-mingle with the sounds and sights of Asian Festivals. Wild and wonderful celebrations and festive lightups mark the start of Singapore’s many festivals that celebrate food, shopping, culture, music and the arts. The latest Hollywood and Asian blockbusters are screened in multi-plex celluloid temples to cater to the Singaporean’s insatiable appetite for movies whilst an endless flow of music from the numerous jazz clubs, karaoke bars, discotheques and open air beer gardens makes 0rchard Road the eclectic people-place it is today.
Dining
Besides shopping, nothing is closer to a Singaporean’s heart than food. And 0rchard Road steps up to the challenge as reflected in the incredible array of menus, al fresco delis to from. The finest international cuisines in five-star hotels, al fresco, delis to air-coditioned food courts in shopping centres large and small. Simply stroll down the street and find an open-air café, wine bar or beer garden to sit and people-watch. For all people, for all tastes, 0rchard Road is a feast of plenty.

The Kufrurstendamm
The idea for creating the Kurfurstendamm stems from the town-builder J.A.W von Carstenn-Lichterfelde, who proposed around 1870 that the riding path leading
Westwards from the city to the royal hunting lodge in the Grunewald forest become a 30metre wide grand boulevard. With the Champs-Elysees in Paris in mind , Otto von Bismarck insisted on increasing the width to an even grander 54 metres. The street. branched off from Tiergartenstrasse and established a route beginning south of the Zoological Gardens (today Budapester Strasse)at Auguste-Viktoria-Platz(today Breitscheidplatz)where the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church was later built. Nick named the “Ku’damm”, the tree-lined avenue leads further westwards to the lake at Halensee. Along the southwest it borders the villa colony of Grunewald (near Bismarckplatz today), developed with palatial homes during the 1880s and 90s.The 19th –century city expansion plans drawn up by Peter Joseph Lenne and James Hobrecht included many similarty tree-lined streets, a contrast to the 18th-century Baroque era development of Friedrichstadt.

The Kurfurstendamm soon developed into an important shopping boulevard with many artists cafes, theatres, variety theatres, and cinemas: its attractions epitomised the exuberant cultural life of the roaring twenties.

Arter the Second World War, the area took on the function of a downtown for the western half of the divided city, resuming its role as an entertainment and commercial centre thus bearing testimony to the German economic miracle of the ‘50s.Public life centred on the area between Adenauerplatz and Breitscheidplatz, while the western portion of the street, lined with fashionable apartment houses, was more residential. During the’ 70s ,the street’s splendour declined somewhat with the addition of fast-food restaurants and inexpensive shops But the city administration and landlords joined forces in the ’80s to upgrade its appearance. Part of this effort was the new fountain built at Breitscheidplatz.

After reunification, the rivalry between the west and east downtown city centres (Kurfurstendamm, Friedrichstrasse, Alexanderplatz) further motivated improvements made in the Kurfurstendamm area. Today it is once again a prime location for luxury boutiques and fashionable shops The lasting attraction of the Kurfurstendamm, which passes through the districts of Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf, owes much to the character of the sidestreets, where a good balance of shopping, office, and residential spaces is still maintained.
