Astoria....我们失去了遗产

星期三下午在Astoria的最后一场演出之前，我站在Tottenham Court Road，发觉过去几年里我在这里享受了许多次演出，但悲哀的是再也没有机会了。西端失去了一些非常历史性的东西，再怎么规划，建再多的轨道交通也无法替代。以后我们伦敦的中心就成了金丝雀码头的cabot广场。失去灵魂。一个建筑不仅仅是砖瓦和设计，那时其本身的记忆，人们对它是有感情的，看看利物浦Menlove大街上列农的房子，被National Trust买了下来，为后人保留着这个半独立式住宅曾经的光辉。

站在Astoria门前，感觉很震撼，那么多不幸的建筑曾经都屹立在这个市中心的后面，到底需要多少空间来挖掘建造，失去这个摇滚之母和那些在牛津大街上美丽的建筑是多么的没必要。正如云霄塔和尤斯顿拱坝一样，我们会后悔失去这个伦敦的小角落。

向Astoria告别，曾经在这里演出，想起第一次和人群互动，曾经到这里看第一场演唱会，然后想象有一天也能在这开个唱，深夜里从西端涌出的人们消失在巷子里去寻找最喜爱的咖啡厅或酒吧，不同人群和文化都混在一起，感受这个世界上最伟大的音乐城市中心那无与伦比的场地所带来的欢愉，以后这些经历只能发生在郊区了。以后？只会是在经过精心消毒的漂亮地铁上参加女王登基，漫步着经过一尘不染的皮萨店，聚在一起感受在最新式的新场地，看着用相同的电脑做出来的音乐，摄像头处处监视着我们从滑铁卢往返至此的每一步。这就是进步？安息 Patrick Mcgoohan....你远远超越于你的年代.....

Astoria....were loosing our heritage....

Standing out on Tottenham Court Road on the afternoon of the final Astoria show on Wednesday I had an experience Ive enjoyed many times over the years, but sadly won't be experiencing again. The west end has lost something very historical that no number of regeneration schemes and crossrail stations can replace. The heart of our London will in future resemble cabott square at canary wharf. Homoginized and soulless. A building is more than the bricks mortar and design, it's the memories connected to it, it's emotional attachment to people and their appreciation of it, just look at Lennons house at Menlove Avanue in Liverpool, bought by the national trust and preserved for future generations in all it's semi detached pebble dashed glory.

Standing in front of the Astoria it's shocking how many disastatous buildings were erected behind centrepoint, how much space there is to build and dig and how unnecessary it is to loose the old lady of rock and the beautiful buildings that curve round onto Oxford street with it. Like the skylon and the Euston arch, we'll regret losing this little corner of London.

The Astoria's a valadictory building, a place you play when you think you've first connected with people, a right of passage to go to your first gigs there and dream of one day headlining there, to spill out into the west end late at night and dissapear down alleys to find your favourite caf or late night bar, a hotch potch of people and cultures all colliding and a feeling of great joy bring able to have such a fantastic venue in the heart of one of the greatest musical cities in the world, the experience in future will be all the more suburban. The future? Were heading headlong into a world of music where it'll be a beautifully sanitized tube journey on the Jubillee line, a wander accross the spotless piazza, herded through the cavernous experience of nando's and pizza express into a spanking new arena where we watch music made on the same computers that work the CCTV that watches our every step all the way from Waterloo and back again. Progress? RIP Patrick Mcgoohan... you were way ahead of your time.....

Paul本周做客BBC6 Steve Lamaq的roundtable show

Following his appearance at this Wednesday's final Astoria show, Paul will be a guest on Steve Lamacq's Roundtable show on Thursday 15th January. The show will air between 6-7pm on BBC 6 Music which can be listened to live online here, on DAB digital radio or on Freeview (channel 707), Sky (channel 0120), Freesat (channel 707) and Virgin (channel 909). Paul's fellow panelists will be Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly singer Sam Duckworth and singer-songwriter Eugene McGuinness.

继本周三在Astoria的演出之后，Paul会于1月13日周四作客Steve Lamacq的Roundtable广播节目。节目会在BB6下午6-7点播出，可以在这里收听直播，也可以可以通过DAB数字广播或Freeview(调频707），Sky（调频0120），Freesat(调频707）以及Virgin(调频909）。和Paul一起作客的还有GCWCF的主唱Sam Duckworth，以及歌手/作词人 Eugene Mcguiness。

关于1月14日Paul在Astoria的演出

已经通知过了,在将近7年的沉寂之后，Paul Draper将于2009年1月14日星期三在London Astoria演出。

在一个独家的报道中Paul表示“在过去几年中有很多演出邀请，在这么多的巡演和音乐节的邀请中，每一个都让我觉得不太合适。而这次是一场让我很有激情的演出，因为这个完美的历史性的场馆就要消失了（Astoria因城建问题将被拆迁）。聚光灯已经准备好，是时候说yes了，给Astoria一个它应有的送别”

这场演出将记录下这个历史性场地的最后一场演出，所有的收入会捐给“热爱音乐反对种族歧视”和“Jail Guitar Doors”组织。

Paul会与My Vitriol合作演出Wide Open Space, 如果演出结束后留在现场会有意外惊喜。

It has been announced that Paul Draper will be making his first live performance in nearly 7 years at the final London Astoria gig on Wednesday 14th January 2009.

In an exclusive statement Paul commented: "There have been so many offers to perform at one thing or another over past couple of years, so many offers of tours and festivals but nothing felt right. This is something I feel passionate about, the loss of this wonderful historic venue. The stars are aligned and it's time to say yes and give the Astoria the send off it deserves."

The gig will mark the final show at the historic venue and all proceeds will go to Love Music Hate Racism and Jail Guitar Doors.

Paul will be performing Wide Open Space with My Vitriol and if you stick around after the show you may be in for a bit of a surprise!

Love Music Hate Racism 顾名思义是反对种族歧视的一个公益组织，不过多解释了。

Jail Guitar Doors 是Billy Bragg创办的一个公益组织，专门给监狱中服刑的犯人送音乐设备，这个名字是出自The Clash 1978的同名单曲。

Paul要演出了!

Paul Draper 已经确定会在2009年1月14日在 London Astoria's Demolition Ball作为My Vitriol的特别嘉宾演出！他会唱Wide Open Space，演出时间大概在晚上9：30。（时间随时变动，请提前入场）

来自Paul的new year's message

A new years message......

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good christmas and wishing you all a great new year for the year ahead, don't get too drunk on new years eve. I have been busy in the studio writing and recording some tracks for my own project right up to christmas but I've headed home to Chester for the festive period to do the rounds of family and friends.

Also I've been doing some co-writing with some excellent new artists that you'll hear a lot more of in the year ahead, I hope. I did mention on the forum around the time of the Six blog that I'd hoped to send a free mp3 download of one of the tracks Ive been working on before the end of the year and I'm still going to do that, it'll just be after the new year instead for various logistical reasons out of my control, so I hope a few weeks delay is ok and please accept my sincerest apologies if you've been waiting. Don't berate me just yet, it could be worse, you could be a guns and roses fan LOL!!

Seriously though, thanks so much for your patience in waiting for some new music, I really hope it doesn't disappoint you.

同时我还和一些不错的新人一起创作了很多歌曲，希望在新年伊始你们就能听到。在发出Six blog那会我确实说过希望能在年终前免费发给你们一首我一直在创作的新歌，我还是这么打算的，只不过由于很多原因超出了我的掌控，所以要在新年之后才能发给你们了，希望延迟几个礼拜也没关系。如果你们一直再等的话，那么请接受我诚挚的道歉。先别恨我啊，我还没那么可恨，你要是枪花的歌迷就能理解了哈哈！（指枪花的Chinese Democracy忽悠了十几年了才发行）

We love us 电话连线录音内容 (1997)

最近闲的无聊，找出Mansun早期做客电台广播的录音听，有些开始很有意思的。

下面这个是1997年3月Mansun做客BBC Radio1的Mark N' Lark show中的一个游戏环节叫We Love Us.

顾名思义就是自恋的意思，主持人会问他们乐队自己的问题，看他们能不能答上来。

节目每天连线一个乐队成员，每人答5个问题，最后看乐队谁的分数最高。

1. 过去五年里在忙什么?
恩，2003年我离开了Mansun, 2004年我把未完成的Kleptomania完成了，并且通过乐队的厂牌Parlophone发行了。然后2005年我搬去了法国，和Skunk Anansie的Skin一起创作她的solo专辑。然后呆了几年后去帮几个艺人制作专辑，最后终于回来作我的个人专辑了！

2. 你会给年轻的自己什么建议？
做SOLO!

3. 你，恨谁？（Mansun歌名You, Who Do You Hate?)
我很公平，我TMD谁都恨！不，不是的。年轻时我年谁都恨，不过现在我谁都不恨！

4. Taxloss录影带里在火车站扔的那些钱怎么办了？
肯定是有5000张5块钱在各处花掉了。经常有人拿着一张贴着Taxloss标签的5块钱出现在我面前。还有一些歌迷不会去花这些5块钱，内上面贴着“免税”（taxloss)的条，还真就是！

5. 最让你骄傲的音乐生涯是什么时候？
恩....我倒不觉得这是一种成就，只是写歌的过程而已。我最喜欢的应该是我写的Keep Telling Myself，出自Kleptomania专辑。

6. 那低潮期呢？
结局很糟糕 - 我很高兴我刚从低潮中走出来，我很可能会一直被这个低潮期影响。

7. 喜欢中客还是巡演大巴？
巡演大巴。我喜欢乘大巴巡演。在上面吃住没问题，但是感觉有点太“西部”了，你知道...

8. 最喜欢的3部电影和3张专辑是什么？
飞跃疯人院，俾斯麦战舰，傀儡人生

今年对于新乐队来说太糟糕了，可能是最糟糕的一年。因为在如今下载时代里，没有钱来发掘他们的能力。

我不相信上帝，不过可能会有别的神之类的，我还是看着问吧。

12. 你是如何写歌的？
我把很多哼哼的旋律和和弦录在我的答录机里，然后过几天之后回来再听，把最好的部分留下来，然后我总是带着一本写满字的书，我会从中找出一个主题，然后把它和旋律搭配上，直到我觉得有点意思，和我的音乐感觉对味。

13. 你的低级趣味歌曲是什么？
Phil Collins的‘In The Air Tonight’ ，出自Tom Fill专辑。

14. 如果你没进入音乐界你会做什么？
我很愿意做一名建筑师。

1) What have you been up to in the last 5 years?
Well, I left Mansun in 2003 then in 2004 I put the unfinished fourth album ‘Kleptomania’ together and released that on Parlophone, the band’s label. Then in 2005 I moved over to France and recorded and wrote with Skin from Skunk Anansie for her solo album. Then i took a couple of years out before getting back into producing a few artists and finally getting back to doing my own project!

2) What advice would you give to a young Paul Draper?
Go solo!

3) You, Who Do You Hate?
I’m pretty fair, I fucking hate everyone! No, not really. I did when i was younger, but I don’t really hate anyone now!

4) What happened to the money that was thrown in the train station in the Taxloss video?
There must be 5000 fivers that have been spent somewhere. I’ve often had people come up to me with a Taxloss fiver. We got some fans out of it who never spent their fiver. It had a sticker on each one saying it’s a taxloss, and it was!

5) What would you class as your proudest career moment(s)?
Hmm… I dont really think of it like that in terms of achievements, just in terms of songs written I guess. The best one I think I wrote was ‘Keep Tellin Myself’ from Kleptomania.

6) And low points?
The end was pretty bad - I was just glad to get out. I’d taken it as far as I could by that point.

7) Vans or tour buses?
Tour buses. I liked touring on a bus. Doing people carriers and hotels was ok but a bit too ‘Westlife’ if you know what I mean.

8 ) What are your top 3 films? And top 3 albums?
One Flew Over The Cockoo’s Nest. Battleship Potemkin. Being John Malkovich.
Parade - Prince, Abbey Road - The Beatles, Songs for the Deaf - Queens Of The Stone Age.

9) If we saw you in a pub, what should we buy you?
Pint of Guinness.

10) What new bands do you like at the moment?
This year has been terrible for new bands, probably the worst ever. There’s no money around to invest in new talent I guess with the download generation.

11) What would you ask God?
I don’t really believe in God, just something in case there’s something else. Keeping my options open I guess.

12) How do you go about writing songs?
I put loads of bits of hummed melodies and chords into my dictaphone. Then I come back a few days later and keep the best bits and edit them down. Then I always keep a book of words and I find a theme from the book and work it into the melody until it means something to me and fits with the music feel-wise.

13) Do you have a guilty pleasure track?
‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins. It’s in the tom fill.

14) What would you have done if you didn’t get into music?
I’d have liked to be an architect.

15) Which pin-up would you skin-up with?
Kate Moss

16) What are the ingredients to your ideal Full English?
All in. The lot.

17) Are any of the characters in your songs based on real people?
Oh yeah, they’re all based on real people that I’ve met at some point.

18) If there was a movie made of your life, what song would be playing over the flashback-montage scene?
The end of ‘Legacy’ by Mansun where it repeats ‘Nobody cares when your gone’.

19) What are your future plans?

最近在忙什么？

我一直在录制一些自己新专辑里的歌曲，还和一个新出道的英国歌手/创作人Catherine Anne Davies一起写一些东西。我还在我的录音棚里重新编辑了一些歌曲。
（老提这个女人= =）

今年是Mansun专辑SIX的十周年，SIX是Mansun的专辑中比较倾向你个人化的专辑么？制作SIX有没有改变乐队之间的化学效应？变好了还是变坏了？

说实话Mansun的每张专辑都有不同的化学效应。SIX是我曾试图把Chad引向创作者的方向，Inverse Midas和Witness to a Murder是他的歌，歌词部分我写了很多，并且作为制作人我做了一次创造性的飞跃，但最主要的还是乐队发自内心的在录音室里现场演奏。

你的blog中说SIX是根据写歌的顺序录制的，真的就这么简单？因为对我来说，听起来感觉每首歌都出现在专辑中合适的位置。

的确是按时间顺序录制的，并且要让每首歌的衔接都非常自然并且有各自的风格和主题是很复杂的工作。我不得这么录制，因为我是在录音期间一边录音一边趁周末写歌的。要让它听起来顺畅自然，并且每首歌都有新元素，还要和之前的歌相比有些独特，这花了我不少脑细胞。

看起来在你创作录制SIX的时候根本不关心人们会怎么看待这张专辑。是这样的么？做SIX期间需要做任何妥协么？

在SIX这张专辑上我丝毫没有任何妥协，这是这张专辑的关键所在。说实话我从不在乎其他人怎么看待我或者我的音乐。

你觉得Mansun在事业上的亮点是什么？在乐队中什么时候是让你最享受的？

我觉得完成Kleptomania是我作为创作人的一个顶峰，这是我自己挑出的精选歌曲，所以说我在最终达到顶峰。在乐队中，录制这些歌曲时是我最享受的。

尽管已经解散超过5年了，Mansun的铁杆歌迷还是在全世界范围的发展，在你看来Mansun和其他乐队相比，它的受人喜爱之处是什么？你觉得歌迷为什么还如此活跃？

我觉得歌词上我们很原始并且不同，我们能够有这么多歌迷是因为我们发行了一系列超过一打的EP，而不是发行单曲，每张EP中我们都给歌迷们水准相当的四首新歌。我们还有一大堆歌曲留给歌迷去发掘，在过去差不多6年里我写了100多首歌曲，这快把我榨干了。

你还和Mansun的其他成员联系么？他们近来在做些什么？

我有时候能见到Andie, 大概一年两三次，他现在是打鼓老师。我已经几年没见Dom Chad了，还有Stove，他因为偷乐队的钱被乐队开除直接导致乐队解散。
（每次都确凿回答不见Chad和Stove，没准传言是真的 - Chad和Stove走的很近....T T)

我理解的没错的话，你正打算开展Solo事业，在Mansun解散后你是否曾一度有放弃做音乐的念头？

没有，我过去一直做音乐，以后也是，尽管由于贝斯手被发现偷乐队的钱导致Mansun解散后我对音乐的热忱曾一度很黯淡。

你的新歌会是什么样？因为你标志性的嗓音应该很难和之前的音乐完全两样，但是音乐方面会是什么样呢？

音乐上，我让我的声音回归原始状态，并且我目前正在制作非常纯粹原始的alternative rock，但也可能会变。
（我估计这个所谓的原始-stripped down应该就是说那种不加修饰的声音，一般录音都会进行后期润色，不管你的嗓音多么天籁，而且为了达到完美的效果，配乐也会做很多修饰，stripped down应该就是说从配乐到演唱都不加任何后期处理的吧)

最近谁或者什么事最让你有灵感？

我很享受最近和Catherine Anne Davies一起写歌。我也很喜欢Radiohead的最新专辑，还有新出的Kings of Leon的专辑。

What have you been up to lately?

I've been recording some of my own songs for my own project and also doing some co-writing with a new british singer songwriter called Catherine Anne Davies. I've also been doing a bit of re-wriring in my studio set up!

Mansun's album Six celebrates it's 10th anniversary this year. Was Six more your album than the other Mansun albums? Did making of Six change the chemistry inside the band for better or for worse?

Each Mansun album had a different chemistry to be honest. Six was the album where I tried to introduce Chad to songwriting, his songs were Inverse Midas and Witness to a Murder. Lyrically I developed a lot and as a producer I made a leap creatively but essentially it has the band playing live in a room at its heart.

In your blog, you say that Six was recorded in the same order as the songs were written. Was it really that simple? Because to me it seems like everything is exactly in it's right place on the album.

It was indeed recorded chronologically, and was very complicated to work out how to fit it together so it sounded like a flowing piece of music with each track having a different flavour and character. I had no choice but to record it like that as I wrote the songs as I went along at the weekends between recording sessions. It took a lot of brainwork to make it flow and sound natural and to make each new piece of music sound new and unique from the bit before it.

It seems that when you we're writing and recording Six, you didn't really care about what people would think of it. Was it so and did you have to make any compromises while making Six?

I didn't compromise a thing when making Six, that was the point of the album. I've never cared what anybody thinks of me or my music to be honest!

What do you think was the high point of Mansun's career artistically? And when did you enjoy yourself the most playing in this band?

I think I reached my peak as a songwriter on the unfinished Kleptomania album which was my best collection of songs, so I peaked at the end. I enjoyed playing as a band the most during the recording of these songs in the studio.

Mansun still has devoted fans all around the globe despite breaking up over 5 years ago. In your opinion, what was the thing about Mansun that separated it from other bands? And why do you think the fans are still so active?

I think lyrically we were original and different and we built a fanbase by releasing a series of over a dozen EPs instead of singles we gave the fans 4 new songs all of equal quality on each EP release.The EPs are very collectable now due to this. We never thought of releasing b-sides, only 4 equal songs. We have a large catalogue of songs left behind now for people to discover, over 100 songs I wrote in about 6 years which was very draining.

Do you keep in touch with the other members of Mansun? What are they doing nowadays?

I see Andy sometimes, about 2 or 3 times a year, he is a drum teacher nowadays. I haven't seen Dom Chad for a few years and Steve 'Stove' King was sacked from the band for defrauding our accounts which led to the band splitting up.

If I have understood correctly, you're about to launch a solo career. After Mansun split up, did you ever feel like quitting with music?

No, I've always made music and always will, although my enthusiasm for making music was dimmed by the split of Mansun after the bass player was found to be stealing money from the bands accounts.

What kind of stuff can we expect from you in the future? Because of your trademark voice it must be quite hard to go to a completely opposite direction, but where are you going to musically?

Musically I've stripped down my sound and am making raw stripped down alternative rock at the moment, but that may change.

Who or what inspires you at the moment?

I'm enjoying Catherine Anne Davies' songwriting who I've been working with recently. Also I enjoyed the last Radiohead album and the new Kings of Leon album.
