When an apology is not enough? What is the difference between a clarification and a correction or an admission of an error? Is a retraction the same as a recantation? To recant is to withdraw or disavow a declared belief, as in renouncing a philosophy or abjuring fealty to a religion.

  The most famous recantation in history was that made by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei, when threatened by the Inquisition in 1633 with the dire punishment for advocating the theory of Copernicus that the earth was not the center of the universe but that it moved around the sun:” I abjure, curse and detest the aforesaid errors and heresies,” swore the intimidated scientist, legendarily adding under his breath,” eppur si muove”---“but it moves.”(That retraction of his recantation is apocryphal, probably the starry-eyed wish of subsequent astronomers.)

  To retract, from the Latin for to draw back, is directed to a specific statement more than a body of work. The most famous retraction last year was made by Newsweek magazine after it apologized for a portion of an article alleging that an internal military investigation had uncovered an instance of desecration of the Koran.

  At first, the magazine issued an apology---an expression of regret---pointing out that its single anonymous source no longer recalled if the allegation was in a certain report.

  The White House press secretary, Scott McClellan, said that it was “puzzling” that Newsweek had not retracted the article. Next day, Mark Whitaker, the magazine’s managing editor, told The New York Times that “it seemed that people felt like we weren’t apologizing. In order for people to understand we had made an error, we had to say ‘retraction’ because that’s the word they were looking for.

  The embattled editor was being precise: Recantation is a weighty word, in this case asserting that the report was mistaken and forthrightly attempting to mitigate the great damage done.(To be continued.)

The CET-4 exam came and went all in the morning, seemed in the blink of an eye. I had planned to spare a month to prepare for it, but things didn’t always come as we have wished to. What can I benefit from an especially high CET-4 mark? If the benefits don’t outweigh the efforts made to achieve that high mark, what I have done is not worthwhile then. As a result, preparation of CET-4 didn’t go on it’s way until this Monday. Wrote the seemingly difficult words in my blog to avoid possible spelling mistakes, and that was all. The whole preparation process possibly took no more than eight hours, a short period, but enough to me.

Time was sufficient for the exam. At the beginning, we were required to write a composition with no less than 120 words. As I have been practicing writing everyday and reading textbooks written in English frequently, writing is no big problem to me. Then it was time for skimming and scanning reading. In actual fact, all the passages appeared in the exam are rather easy compared to original edition books, let alone passages in GRE, but I am not one hundred percent sure that I have selected all the right answers. And then listening comprehension followed. I could easily understand the content and even identify every word. The problem was that some passages are too long, I could hardly memorize all the information they provided. More practice in recording what I have heard in real time is needed in the future. Another problem is that I haven’t paid particular attention to the usage of words and my writing is not idiomatic enough.

All in all, some points that remain to improve include:

1.      the ability of recording the information while listening;

2.      the ability of using words properly and accurately;

3.      the ability of writing idiomatically.

Teamwork as a whole can naturally produce an overall greater productivity through the concept of “synergy”, where the total of the whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts. But the idea that people work more productively in teams rather than as individuals is going to vary greatly between the types of teams that are organized, the end reward or motivation for both the team and the individuals, as well as the individuals themselves.

Regarding individuals, some people are born with the desire to succeed, no matter what the situation or task they are facing. These people may evolve into the classic “Type A” personalities that work ferociously because they are driven by an internal fire that says they must always be doing something, whether individually or as part of a team. Other people may desire to be less socially involved or are very highly competitive with other people. For these people, their work is most productive as individuals, because the very idea of cooperating with other people limits their effectiveness and efficiency because they simply do not want to be a part of the team. Whether this mindset is innate or developed over time does not matter, it is merely the state of their being and neither motivation nor rewards can generate inside them the desire to work collectively as a team.

Some people are highly motivated by social interaction and the desire to work with others towards a collective effort. Obviously these individuals are at their most productive when working as part of a team. Organizational behavioral studies have shown that Asian cultures are much more likely to develop this type of collective behavior as opposed to the more individualistic behavior associated with Western cultures. It could naturally be assumed then that there may be cultural values that can determine whether people are at their most productive individually or as part of a team. (To be continued.)

The second paragraph is actually a sentence----the longest, although not the most elusive sentence ever appeared in the reading section of GRE. Today I would like to take an analysis of the sentence to enhance my reading ability. Other interested people will also benefit a lot from reading up the sentence.

“These questions are political in the sense that the debate over them will inevitably be less an exploration of abstract matters in a spirit of disinterested inquiry than an academic power struggle in which the careers and professional fortunes of many women scholars----only now entering the academic profession in substantial numbers----will be at stake, and with them the chances for a distinctive contribution to humanistic understanding, a contribution that might be an important influence against sexism in our society.”

1.        These questions are political in the sense that the debate will be less an exploration than a struggle.

2.        The exploration is of abstract matters in a spirit of disinterested inquiry.

3.        The struggle is an academic power struggle in which the careers and professional fortunes of many women scholars will be at stake. (At stake means in a dangerous situation)

4.        The women scholars are only now entering the academic profession in substantial numbers.

5.        The women scholars have chances with them for a distinctive contribution to the humanistic understanding.

6.        The contribution might be an important influence against sexism in our society.

(Due to the frequent exams of selective courses and something else, I have quitted reading for such a long time, and that makes me feel unsettled intensely. Now it’s time to pick it up. English is so important to us no matter whether we decide to go abroad to further our study or just stay in China. Enjoying the process of learning is most important!!)
