WELSH golfer Bradley Dredge says he is determined to grasp a "once in a lifetime opportunity" of playing in the Ryder Replica Tommy Bahama Watches Cup on home soil next year.

Dredge made an impressive start to his qualifying campaign for the Celtic Manor showpiece by finishing runner-up at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

And the 36-year-old hopes that performance is the first step on the road to fulfilling his dream of flying the Welsh flag in Newport.

"My strategy this year was to play more events and I can still achieve my goals for the year in terms of the Race to Dubai, but I am looking at starting a new year-long season from this week onwards," said Dredge.

Former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam, now an ambassador for Welsh Golf, also hailed Dredge's second place in Switzerland.

"Bradley Dredge is a good player and has hit some form again," said Woosnam.

"It would be nice just to have one Welshman in the Ryder Cup for a little country like us, it would absolutely fantastic to be able to cheer one of our own at Celtic Manor."
