(2)- who helped me a lot

![]() He is my advisor at SUNY Buffalo. He was the first one I met in the U.S. who helped shape my career path later on. It was him who asked me to follow the latest trends in Information retrieval, which is now called search engine technology. Although he was not an expert in IR, he probably had the gut feeling that one day information retrieval would be big, that was in 1992.
2 years later, I decided to quit the PhD program and started to work in industry. He actually supported my decision, although he knew I could do well in academia. He was right again, I did do better in industry.
He came to Beijing for a conference recently, and on July 4th, he visited Baidu, I was so happy to see him again after so many years, and I think he was happy to see my progress too!
