The factors that you shouldconsider when sizing a mud system are:

1)  Type of drill you will be using
2)  The drill rate
3)  The type of solids
4)  The length of your bore
5)  The GPM of the pump
6)  The tank volume you will need
7)  The number of cones
8)  The screen size

These factors are important to know so that you use a recycler that is adequateenough to clean the mud and protect the components on the rig, pump andcleaner. Once you have decided on the size of the mud system you need, there ismore information that you should be armed with:

Gallons per Minute: When deciding the size of a mud system that you will need,it is best to base it on 1 ½ to two times the amount you are pumping. Example:If you are pumping 250 gals, you would want to go with a 500-gpm unit.

Trailer or Skid: Depending on your requirements, mud systems can be trailermounted or skid mounted. Trailer-mounted units require dedicated trailer (builtto unit). Skid-mounted unit can be removed from trailer which releases thetrailer for other duties.

Screen surface: The more screen surface area you have means more volume thatyou can clean.

Screen selection: The mesh size of screens is measured by the number of holesper square inch on the screen. Different mesh sizes control the size of thecuttings that you remove. The same mesh size will not work in all drillingconditions. Sizes will vary depending on the size of the cuttings and the typeof formations you are cleaning.

Shakers: There are three types of shakers (orbital, elliptical and linear).Orbital is a circular motion and elliptical isn’t perfectly circular — it’s anellipse or oval. Linear has vibration that is induced by a pair of eccentric(or eccentrically weighted) shafts turning in opposite directions. This type ofarrangement allows for the development of straight line or linear motion thatcan also be produced in a positive (uphill) incline.
While each shaker has a specific place that it will shine like the price, theability to process heavy clays and rock or fines and ultra-fines, our overallpreference is the linear.

Cones: Depending on the size of the mud system you choose, the cone size willeither be 4, 5, 10 or 12 in. Each size cone has a micron cut point, which isthe size of the smallest particle that the cone can pull out. The 4- and 5-in.cones have a micron cut of 20 microns and the 10- and 12-in. have a 74 microncut.
Hydrocyclone cones process the liquid at a rate of 50 gpm with the 4-in. cones,80 gpm with the 5-in. and 500 gpm with the 10- or 12-in. cones.

Cones need pressure to work properly. A normal operating pressure range for 4-and 5-in. cones is 30 to 40 psi, 10- and 12-in. cones is 23 to 35 psi.

Trash Pump: Do you have a trash pump for your recycler? Trash pumps aredesigned to pump large amounts of water that contains hard and soft solids.Trash pumps are capable of processing materials that would clog othercentrifugal pumps and can move hundreds or even thousands of gallons perminute.

GN Vertical Cutting Dryer for Drilling Waste Management

The GN Vertical Cutting Dryer uses centrifugal force to dry drilled solids in oil or synthetic base fluids. A stainless steel screen bowl traps “wet” solids and accelerates them up 900RPM with G force up to 420. Liquid is forced through the screen bowl openings, while “dry” solids are extracted by the angled flights attached to the cone, which rotate slightly slower than the bowl. Tungsten carbide protects the flights from abrasive solids and ensures long operational life. This aids in maintaining a constant gap between the scroll and screen bowl, which is crucial for proper operation. GN cutting dryer has been done strict balance testing for all major rotary components to minimize vibration & noisy.It is the ideal products for oil based drilling waste management.

1)Pre-screening of the returned mud using GNZJ852 Mud Cleaner understream shaker.

Slurry feed to the buffer box of the shaker.This shale shaker can handle a throughput of 250 USgpm and is designed to remove particles down to (60mesh/80mesh).First Panel use screens of 60mesh/80mesh,second Panel fixed in front side of shaker using screens (150mesh/200mesh).Fluids with particles larger then 60mesh/80mesh removed goes to the 1# Shaker Compartment.

2)Secondary cleaning using GNZJ852 Mud Cleaner desilter cones

1# SB5x4-11Centrifugal pump feed mud from 1# Shaker compartment to feed de-silter cones, where the particles larger then 20 microns are separated out by centrifugal force from desiltr cone nipple, and get down to GNZJ852 mud cleaner bottom shaker second panel which fixed with a finer screen which again produces a virtually dry product. Overflow from the desilter cones with particle size less then 20microns goes to 2# De-silter compartment. This is the 2nd phase solids control.

3)Third cleaning using LW450x1000 Decanter Centrifuge

Submersible Slury Pump suck mud from 2# De-silter compartment and feed to LW450x1000 decanter centrifugewhere the particles larger then 5~7  microns are separated out by centrifugal force,cleaning fluids with particles less then 5~7 microns goes to 3# Mixing compartment. This is the 3rd phase solids control.

4)Integral mixing system using SLH150-35 Jet Mud mixer.

This system allows fresh mud to be prepared very rapidly from bentonite powder. Second centrifugal pump on tank side is dedicated to this function allowing continuous mixing or recirculation as required. 

5)Integral charge pump to supply clean mud back to the drilling rig.

The mixing pump above is a dual function pump, on mixing pump outlet with a T pipe can be controlled by a valve to provide a continuous supply of clean mud from 3# mixing compartment under pressure to the high pressure mud pump, avoiding problems of starvation and cavitations which can rapidly cause damage.

HDD Drilling mud cleaning system

Generally,The mud cleaning system for removal of drill cuttings and recovery of drilling mud coming from an oil well, where the mud slurry may be made up essentially of barite particles having a specific gravity of 4.2 or more and a particle size mostly under 200 mesh, drill cuttings having a specific gravity of 2-3, and varying particle sizes ranging from 200 mesh to 1/2 inch or more, and water


Oilfeild Drilling mud cleaing system

In oil feild drilling, drilling mud must be supplied to the hole as the well depth progresses. One of the basic functions of drilling mud is to carry the drill cuttings up to the surface so they can be disposed of. A drilling mud in common use today is typically composed of barite and water. There may be other constituents, (such as oil) but they would exist only in small amounts or percentages. Since large quantities of drilling mud are needed in drilling an oil well, it is desirable to recover the barite, and recycle it. Various drilling mud cleaning systems are in use today for separating the drill cuttings from the slurry so that the fluid and/or barite can be recycled. Most systems use a combination of one or more screens or sieves in a series flow relationship, with a final separating step using a hydrocyclone or centrifuge. Hydrocyclones desander and decanting centrifuges are expensive pieces of equipment with high energy and maintenance costs.

VFD Decanter CentrifugeModel GLW-V355×1250N for separation of detrital material of drilling muds is widely used in solid control system for drilling mud to separate the solids phase of mud, remove harmful fine drill solids such as debris, etc. in the mud fluid, or recover weighting materials such as barite etc. so as to reduce the cost of mud fluid.The motors and the feed pump are controled by the control panel. Also the speed of the motor also bowl and scroll are also controlled by the panel.


Two Motor Mechanical Scroll Drive System

The two motors both controlled by independent variable frequency drives (VFD), and the main motor connected a hydrodynamic coupling, to keep it safe, and if there are something wrong, the connection with main motor and the bowl will be intermitted.

The hydrodynamic coupling is used to keep the bowl and the motor same speed or with same rate. Electric motor is firmly connected to the pump section of the hydrodynamic coupling, therefore they run at the same angular velocity. Similarly, operating device is stiffly connected to the turbine section of the hydrodynamic coupling, and they run at the angular velocity.

NJQ50 Mud Gun for oilfield

There are 2 type of mud guns, the common one is top tank type, sometimes we design it as bottom tank type. Top tank mud gun is controlled by staff on the tank, the difference between GN mud gun and NOV mud gun is the nozzle numbers, we make to 3 nozzle numbers, which can jet more place in the tank so the agitating effect can be better.


Our own designed NJQ50 mud gun is for ZJ drilling mud solids control system, is mainly used in mud recycling system, at the same time, it can work together with shear pump to avoid mud sinking in mud tank. This series mud gun is simple structured, easy operated and an ideal mud gun in solids control system.

Where is the mud gun pressure come from ?

For high pressure mud gun, the pressure came from mud pump, for lower pressure mud gun, the pressure came from mixing pump, it can mix and transfer drilling mud to another tank.At present, GN can produce 2” and 3” mud gun, both of them with 3 nozzles, it can be made into manual rotary type or fixed type, it is optional. The drilling mud solids separation system is one of the core part for drilling field. Here will introduce it's breif process for you .

Installation of all solids separation equipment


Firstly, start up the shaker box locking device of GNPS703balanced elliptical shale shaker & GNPJ703 mud cleaner(as its operation please refer to the related user manual) in Recycling Tank, and have a trying operation. All valves are on shut condition.Open it before usage,and ensure all of them unblocked.


Working process of drilling mud solids separation system

Start up GNPS703 shale shaker & GNPJ703 mud cleaner.

 ①start up the feeding pump (user owner) while they are working steadily, by this stage mud in the mud sump from the wellhead ,can be sent to the shale shaker GNPS703 for the first class purification.

② When the mud reaches to three quarters of the 1# compartment (about 5 minutes), start up the 1﹟SB6x5-12sand pump . mud will be sent to the desander cyclone from the 1﹟compartment, at a pressure of 0.20~0.35MPa , then ,the desander starts to work for the second class purification.

 ③the treated mud overflows to the 2﹟compartment. start 2﹟SB6x5-12 sand pump, mud will be send to desilter cyclone from 2﹟compartment at a pressure of 0.20~0.35MPa.the desilter starts to work for the third class purification. Mud from this stage overflow to 3﹟compartment of storage tank. Then the treated mud pumped to mud pump(user own) through feeding pump and connecting pipe.Mud pump will send mud to drilling head.
 The jet mud mixer can mix the mud in 3# compartment of the mud tank, while the pipelines need to be prepared in advance.Also this mixing pump can works as feeding pump for mud pump.

Mud gun types in GN
I. Divided by pressure. There will be high pressure and normal pressure
II. Divided by rotary type. There will be with manual rotary or fixed type
III. Divided by diameter. There will be 2″ (NJQ50) and 3″ (NJQ80)
IV. Divided by nozzle number. There will be single one and triple one, etc.
V. Divided by valves. There will be gate valve type and butterfly valve type.


Breif introduction on mud gun
The mud gun also can be called mud mixing gun. As we know it is usually used along with mud agitator as mixers for many kinds of drilling rig like HDD or CBM.The mud gun is consisted by main construction by steel pipe and flange, the valves (including high pressure or normal pressure), and the rotary parts.The mud gun is simple in design or structure. Usually all turning takes place on double rows of steel balls in flame hardened races. There is nothing to tighten or adjust. Flow is unrestricted and pressure drop is minimum
Mud gun spare parts
NJQ50 holds 2” diameter, and 2” valve can be butterfly or gate valve, then the connector size should be also 2”. The pressure can be normal pressure(0.6Mpa) or high pressure(1.6Mpa),the nozzle number will be customized as 3 or 1. And there will be rotation angle by manual rotation.
