    其实，这就是美国儿童发育问题专家理查德·洛夫所说的“自然缺失综合征”。洛夫在《森林中的最后一个孩童：保护我们的孩子远离自然缺失综合征》一书中，对这种怪现象进行了描述。他说，出生在上世纪60年代的人，是与大自然亲密接触的最后一代人。从那以后，人与自然的距离渐行渐远，如今，对孩子而言，到野外去玩耍，还不如呆在家里看电视、玩电脑。

    此外，还有不少专家警告说，一个对大自然缺乏了解的孩子，长大以后不可能成为一个关心环境、热衷环保的人。利亚诺说，同大自然亲密接触过的孩子，一般很少会虐待动植物，因为对他们而言，要伤害自己认识的、甚至有了感情的对象，很难。

英国格洛斯特郡大学的马丁·毛德斯莱博士说：“户外活动是孩子们与世界联系最主要的纽带，大自然有其独特的吸引力，孩子们能从中汲取养分、得到满足，从而健康快乐地成长。当孩子们与大自然融为一体的时候，会有奇迹诞生的。”

    正是认识到亲近自然的重要性，哥伦比亚生物学家们在1998年创建了教育和保护环境组织，在教育部的支持和各个院校的帮助下，让4-19岁的孩子回归自然，让他们去感受大自然的颜色、气味和味道；让他们意识到，他们也是大自然的一分子。
