MASTERPIECE NO.1:a totally imaginary story
AMILY LEE
April 16, 2011 Thunder storm
Weird weather! I had never realized that I had no umbrella or anything else that could save me from the annoying drops until I heard the thunder growling in the distance. “Another hard day”, I thought.
It was an early morning of mid-spring, time for families and friends to go for a picnic in the open air, camping or maybe plan a campfire evening party, if it weren’t for this changeable weather. Even though, they could do anything they like. But I have to go to that stuffy building to continue my work on a bio-chemical technology transfer project for I am the person in charge of winning this case over and discuss the details regarding the first stage of the project. My boss, that little, grey-haired old man with bronze-colored complexion once said in a strategy scheming conference that if we got this case over and put the technology into production, our company would soon be bigger than life in Asia and would sure earn a big profit. His remarks really give me much pressure, and who knows how did I survive these days’ heavy workload?
I was all wet through when I was at my office. Lucky for me, there was another suit folded in my drawer. Though a little bit casual, I quickly changed it on and switched my computer on. Neither was I a major of natural science nor had I ever dealt with a medicine shark in Europe, to make things easier when I communicate with my counterpart in the future, I began to study all the information about that company and all materials regarding bio-chemical technology, also, the relevant regulations and laws in that respect. They were boring, tedious works full of uncommon and obscure words and jargons which I just couldn’t skip. I looked out of the windows, it was still raining as if the fragile strings endeavored with all their might to smash the ground. “What I’ve learned in the past? It seems that I’ve done pretty well in my position, but, when the boss really needs me, I can do nothing to help. What if…..”
Then someone pounding on the door pulled me back into sober, it was my assistant, Cecelia.
“A, the boss is calling for a meeting tomorrow, he needs an outline of ….”
“I see, will you please email me the original notice of meeting and the research papers I sent to you the other day?”
I sat straightly to avoid any unpleasant feeling in my shoulders, stared tightly on the screen, typed the report out and refreshed my inbox once in a while. I tried not to be distracted by those trivial things so I played music, THANK YOU by Dido, to soothe my nerve. Just when I was immersed in that soft voice mixed with the clicks as my fingertips tapped on the keyboard, an email notice jumped out of the screen, not from Cecelia, but from boyfriend. It read, “Dear A, I know you’ve been through a hard time on your financial crisis.” “Oh my god, how does he know that, I never let it on to anybody except…. Oh, the landlady, it must be her!” I thought. “To relieve your burden, I make a decision, I’m determined to move out of the pad and, maybe you can find a cheaper single room and I’ll disappear from you for a short period of time….” I could tell clearly what he was aiming to say even without reading it over. Yes, he did find an excuse to say goodbye!
What a blow to me! I was driven nuts, I ran out of the building regardless of what a strange way everybody was looking at me or how heavy the rain was. How could everything be so hard to me? Why should I bother to make everything seem so perfect? Working, in the last an analysis, is merely a means of making a living, why should I care about the company, the boss, the boyfriend as long as I can stay in my position and easily escape all my responsibilities? I could have cried out loud but the tears paled into insignificance besides the splashing water. I needed an outlet but I couldn’t see anything, nor could I hear anything, for the rain had swallowed up the whole city, but me.
MASTERPIECE NO.2:
Inflation can be defined as the overall general upward price movement of goods and services in an economy. There are various indexes that measure different aspects of inflation, and one is consumer price index (CPI), which measures inflation as experienced by consumers in their day-to-day living expenses. Generally speaking, if CPI>5%, means the country is suffering a serious inflation, let’s see some figures released by NBS: China’s CPI rose 7.1 percent year on year in January 2008, the largest increase since December 1996.This drastic change in the price of consumer goods was driven by many factors, and such record figures were largely in line with expectations given the adverse impact of the recent snow storm in South China and the food price hikes during the lunar New Year holidays on consumer prices.
To dampen inflation, we should know clearly what caused the soaring inflation. Not only china, but also the rest of world is suffering from what the depreciation of the US dollars has brought about. Firstly, accelerating the pace of the yuan appreciation maybe a good idea, in fact, much of the recent acceleration can be attributed to external influences such as the cut in the federal funds rate by the Federal Reserve and a bearish prospect of the U.S. dollar. Also, the government can rely on central bank measures to rein in inflation, such as increasing the reserve ratio in order to hold back excessive liquidity.
Secondly, when looking into the essential reason of the inflation, we should know that’s because of the imbalance between the supply and the need, especially when the international food supply is out of stock. After a snowstorm, I think we Chinese, especially those who experienced the disaster personally should all realize how food is important to us. Although the country has already planned to increase the production of the essential food supply such as the pork, and agriculture plants, but what happened has right proved that our government still hasn’t make it right when doing such guarantee work, the whole nation was caught in shock. So I think the government should really establish a “foodstuff stock center” to meet with the emergencies.
Thirdly, the housing problem which has been haunting around us is still a stimulus to the inflation. As more and more foreign investment swarming to china, a large part of them goes to the real estate industry, so this, with a combination with many other underlying factors, makes housing price skyrocketing. What’s more, due to the increasing housing price, some building materials involved in construction are at upward prices too. So maybe strengthing the supervise on foreign investment and curb the crazy bubble real estate would be a good method to cap the inflation pressure, in the long run, of course.
I also learned from the internet that when facing a inflation, many countries also did a lot, like giving subsidies to people at low-income level. After all, inflation cannot last long, but what our government can do to us and how they plan to deal with the issue of people’s livelihood are what we really concern about. It’s high time that our government took actions.
MASTERPIECE NO.3:
Love and harmonious society
By amily lee
Seeing this title, I was lost in confusion. All I have was the familiar melody of a song lingering over my head. “All I wanna do is find the way back into love, I can’t make it through without the way back into love.” Love, the theme for human-beings for all times, for thousands of years passed, and the future, has always been frequently mentioned, praised and discussed in various literature arts, and in our daily conversations. parental love, brotherly love, turtle love, love for compatriots, and love for self, love lost, love regained. It seems that our society is flooded with love, yet I can hardly find the trace of love.
We all long for a harmonious society because the ever-changing world in which we are living now is faced with lots of conflicts, conflicts that we see around us or from news, conflicts in our own minds. Since the tempo of life has quickened, people become more worldly and indifferent about others-they don’t give a damn to care about the world, except for themselves. There are so many people on the buses or trains refusing to give their seats to the old, the pregnant and the disabled for no good reasons, people standing by at the accident spots showing their “sympathy” but doing nothing at all, terrorism threatening our peaceful lives, suicidal bombs happening everyday, and the struggle for independence at all costs.
Why? In such a world called “highly civilized” not “brutal”, we are supposed to live in harmony, instead of among constant conflicts. The only truth lies in that our society is starving for love. All want to take and take for granted, instead of to give. They are stingy with sharing their tiny love, and think that love means to possess, thus this selfish thinking prevails.
Yet love is not to take, only by sharing your love and kindness can the value of love be fully realized. Think about the love of the Lord.
Suddenly all the cloudy mist seems to be cleared. It’s not just that there is a lack of love, nor the unharmonious tune of our society, it’s that we haven’t yet fully discovered the power of love, and the powerful role it takes in building a harmonious society.
Join together, hand by hand and shoulder to shoulder, we will surely make a harmonious society with all our hearts open and pieces of love to show our unity and tolerance. Listen, here comes the symphony of harmony!!
MASTERPIECE NO.4:come-uppance? so ridiculous! put aside whether there really
exists causality between human behaviors and natural phenomena because
so far there hasn't been any positive demonstration about that, it's unwise and
even vicious for sharon stone to make such cold blooded speech about the heartbreaking
earthquake. she shouldnt have associated the earthquake with wenchuan earthquake, i don't
know how she thought of making such a silly desision at the question of the tabloid press
cuz you know maybe she was trying to defend something, showing her indignation
and styling herself as a person with tolerence or sth, i don't know, but it just backfired,
what she'd said is telling the world that she's an ill-educated person who knows nothing sympathy
and compassion to brotherhood, now people worldwide know her malicious attack and that she's but an anishathlete and cold blooded
bitc*, i don't know how far she can continue in the showbiz.
backing to the issue, the earthquake did happen in china, yet it's a huge loss to the whole
mankind, isn't it? if there's really something called come-uppance, maybe that's a reminder calling everyone to recollect what we have done
to our surroundings.
MASTERPIECE NO.5:
A long time ago there was a group of young fellows, Smith, Millet, Claude, and I, Carl. We were very close friends who liked sketching around the country parts of France but could hardly live by. We couldn’t do anything to change our status quo until one day, I suggested a perfect plan, which was based on my new discovery that the merit of many great artists had never been acknowledged until after their death. Most of the others were strongly against that proposal, but finally, they thought it was a clever idea and decided to carry it out right away. The next morning, three of us cleared out to different parts of France, each carrying a small picture of Millet’s. we began to make Millet’s name known to everyone by both selling pictures by him and disseminate the news to the world about Millet’s poor condition with and identification of a “Master”. Then six weeks later, when conditions are ripe, we called a halt, planned the fake death of Millet and a great funeral. Ever since that, the price of Millet’s paintings has been rocketing up to what we had never imagined. Needless to say, we made a handsome of money and live cozy lives. How miraculous it is!!
MASTERPIECE NO.6:
Why is it difficult to get student’s loan
Basically there are 3 types of student’s loan in China today, national student’s loan, commercial student’s loan, and student’s loan granted by the schools. Here I mainly want to talk about the first one, national student’s loan, apparently the most troublesome one. It’s a kind of credit (mainly) offered by four state-owned commercial banks and is advocated by the central government that even the poorest students can continue their studies. Fifty percent of the interest rate is paid from the nation budget in order to reduce the burden of the cash-strapped students.
Then what on earth causes the difficulty for students to get loans? There are several aspects I’d like to mention regarding this.
Firstly, it’s because of the students’ credit crisis, of course. People may say we students are suffering the consequences of our own doings for lacking credibility. But they haven’t taken the present situation of employment into account. Some students do refuse to pay back the loan deliberately, but mostly because those who are inexperienced and not well qualified are really not in a position to pay off the money, and they can even hardly live by.
Secondly, some student’s loan plans are not well carried out due to the difficulties in the coordination of the universities and the local branches of banks, who share little interests in common, thus makes it a long time before the two sides finally reach an agreement.
Thirdly, as I mentioned above, there is much uncertainty of credit risk for the bank. Nation student’s loan is an open credit, meaning that no security or guarantee is required against the loan. Once a student fails to pay off the money, there’s a bad debt record of the bank. Since the performance of the bank staff and the operating status is judged by the quality of each loan, the increasing risk will doubtlessly weaken the enthusiasm of the bank and its staff.
Let’s see how Americans deals with this problem. The Federal government has taken some measures to provide guarantee for the banks which offers student’s loans. E. g, there are some loan collecting agencies to help set up a consciousness of their duties among students, especially when they enroll at the universities and graduate. Also, after they step out of the campus, their employers will detect a certain amount of money from their monthly wages to help them pay back their loans.
Anyway, we call for a perfect credit loan system which we don’t have now to ensure each transaction of loan can be made successfully, and to make sure that everyone who deserves a good education can pass off the college without a hitch. However, we often pass the blame on to others, and we are prone to do so. But looking into this matter carefully, we will find that, if someone must be held responsible for it, it must be us, everyone in this society.
