41. Milk the bull 试图做不可能的事

He is such a miser. Borrowing money from his is like milking the bull. 他是个十足的吝啬鬼,想从他手里借钱如同叫铁公鸡下蛋一样根本没有可能。

It's like milking the bull asking him to give up the foolish plan. 让他放弃那个愚蠢的计划根本不可能。

42. Night owl 习惯于夜间工作的人,夜猫子

He is in the habit of staying up at night to read. He is a real night owl. 他习惯于夜读,真是个夜猫子。

He is a night owl and often turns night into day. 他是个夜猫子,常常把黑夜当白天。

43. Nip in the bud 防患于未然

A bad habit in a child should be nipped in the bud. 应该尽早把孩子的坏习惯改过来。

Her plan to go shopping was nipped in the bud when visitors arrived unexpectedly. 有客人突然来访,使她上街购物的计划落了空。

44. No picnic 不是轻松的事

We gather a good deal of valuable information from our expedition, but it was no picnic, I can tell you.我们通过探险收集到不少宝贵资料,不过我可以告诉你们,这可来之不易。

47. On pins and needles 座如针毡

The mother had been on pins and needles all day long, until she received the call from her son. 母亲在接到儿子电话前,一直焦虑不安。

The close game had us on pins and needles till the very end. 由于比赛双方势均力敌,我们一直很紧张,知道比赛结束才平静下来。

48. On tenterhooks 焦虑不安,提心吊胆

My examination results are going to arrive this morning. I was on tenterhooks all day yesterday thinking about them. 我的考试成绩今天上午才能知道。昨天一整天我老想这事,坐立不安。

The author keeps the reader on tenterhooks till the last chapter. 作者不断给读者制造悬念知道最后一章。

49. On thin ice 如履薄冰

The football club was on thin ice at the end of the year. It had lost most of its games and had very little money left. 这个足球俱乐部到年底时陷入困境,它的大部分球赛都输了,而且只剩下很少一点钱。

Without some facts to support you, you're on thin ice with that argument. 如果没有一些事实作为依据,你的那种论点是站不住脚的。

50. Out of one's shell 不再害羞,不再沉默

Mary was a new comer and she felt ill at ease in the new school, so the teacher tried to draw her out of her shell by asking her to talk about her former school. 马丽是个新来的同学,她初到这所学校感到很拘谨,所以老师就特地让她谈谈她以前的学校使其有话可说。

He has to know you for a long time before he really begins to come out of his shell. 他非得认识你很长时间之后才会真正愿意与你攀谈。

The tube train arrived at the station with passengers packed like sardines. 地铁载着满车厢挤得像沙丁鱼斯的旅客进站了。

52. Palmy days 全盛时期,兴盛时期

He was born in the palmy days of peace. 他出生于和平的兴盛时期。

Once he lived in a mansion, but that was in his palmy days; he's content now to get a tow-roomed cottage. 他曾经拥有富丽堂皇的大厦,不过那是在他最飞黄腾达的时期。现在他能有座两个房间的小屋也就满足了。

53. Pass the buck 推卸责任

He hates making decisions. He always passes the buck on to someone else.他最不喜欢做决定,总是把责任推给别人。

Never once to admit error, he passed the buck to his subordinates. 他从来不认错,而是把 责任推到下属头上。

54. Play all one's cards 使出浑身解数

I've played all my cards. There's nothing more I can do to persuade him.我已使出了浑身解数,再没有办法说服他了。

I haven't played all my cards yet. We can still make a deal.我并没有到穷途末路的地步,我们仍然可以做一笔交易。

55. Play the game 遵守规则,按章办事

The negotiation broke down because one side refused to play the game. 因一方拒绝按规则办事,谈判破裂了。

Cheating in a test is not playing the game. 考试作弊是不诚实的行为。

56. Poker face 一本正经,面无表情

She concealed her strong emotions behind a poker face. 她把强烈的感情隐藏在毫无表情的面孔之下。

I never know whether my boss likes my work or not; he is a real poker face. 我从来无法知道老板到底喜不喜欢我的工作,他的脸上可真是一点表情也没有。

57. Promise the earth / moon 作无法兑现的许诺

A politician who promises the moon during a campaign loses the voters' respect. 在竞选活动中作无法兑现的许诺的政客会失去选民的尊重。

I can't promise you the moon but I'll do the best job I can. 我不能对你许诺,不过我会尽力而为。

58. Puff one's chest out 得意洋洋

His chest was puffed out with pride on the day that they gave him his medal. 他们给他奖章的那一天,他真是得意洋洋。

He puffed his chest out when he scored in the final minute of the game. 他在比赛的最后一分钟进了一球,得意极了,把胸脯挺得老高。

59. Raise eyebrows 使人吃惊,引起他人非议

The news that the British prince was engaged to a commoner raised eyebrows all over the kingdom. 英国王子与平民订婚的消息让举国上下为之震惊。

The miraculous effect of medical herbs has raised some conservative eyebrows. 草药的奇效使一些保守的人瞠目结舌。

60. Rotten / bad apple 害群之马

Most students are polite and diligent but there are a few rotten apples. 大多数学生懂礼貌肯用功,但也有几个是害群之马。

To clear a town of rotten apples in the government is easier said than done. 清除掉镇政府部门中的害群之马说起来容易做起来难。
