Franklin Graham: A Man With A Mission 葛福临:使命在身
This famous son is doing things his way to make a difference
这位饱受盛名之累的儿子正用自己的方法发挥影响力
October 15
Growing up in the shadow of a famous father isn't always easy. And Franklin Graham, son of world-famous evangelist Billy Graham, probably knows that better than most people. Instead of trying to be like his father, Franklin took a different path.
In the beginning
As a teenager, he rebelled by smoking, drinking, fighting and riding his motorcycle recklessly. Not very interested in school, Franklin had a hard time getting out of bed on time. His mother solved the problem by pushing firecrackers under his locked bedroom door! Franklin dropped out of one school and was later kicked out of another one.
He continued like this until he was 22. At that time, Franklin's father had a heart-to-heart talk with him about his future. He explained that only Franklin could choose which direction his life would go in. Later, while reading the Bible, he realized God could give him a fresh, new start. And that's exactly what Franklin needed.

Chat Room
Teaching Topic: Famous, not infamous 教學主題:Infamous 並非不出名
world-famous=world-renowned:全世界出名的
infamous:恶名昭彰,声名狼藉的

---Hi, friends. Welcome to another edition of Chat Room. Hey, Naomi.
---Hey, Ken. And hello, everyone. So, question: Have you heard of Billy Graham?
---Sure. He's a famous preacher.
---Well, he's not just famous. According to our article, he's world-famous.
---So you can use the noun "world" like an adjective to show something is true everywhere on Earth?
---Right. Another example of this would be to say world-renowned. Renowned also means well-known or very popular.
---Hmm. The words renowned and known look like they are related.
---They do. And the meanings are similar. But they're spelled differently. So be careful. Renowned doesn't have a "K" in it.
---But the opposite of renowned is still unknown, right?
---Right. Uh, we could say this actress was unknown until she starred in a blockbuster movie.
---famous是出名的,前面加一个world,world-famous就是全世界出名的,另外一个同义字是world-renowned,renowned就是well-known的意思,而well-known的反义词是unknown默默无名的。So what about the opposite of famous? It's in-famous, right?
---Oh, good try, Ken. Well, first of all, it's not in-famous. It's infamous.
---infamous.
---That's right. But you know infamous also means famous.
---That doesn't make sense.
---Well, it means famous but in a negative way or for a bad reason. For example, there was a movie that came out last year about the infamous outlaw Jesse James. He used to rob banks and everyone knew who he was.
---Can you use this word to describe things as well as people?
---You can. Do you remember Britney Spears' infamous first marriage? It only lasted less than three days. Yeah, I sure do.
---famous是出名的,如果在前面加上in,infamous指的并不是不出名的,而是恶名昭彰,声名狼藉的
---OK, friends. Come back tomorrow for more Chat Room. And come back afterthis break for more Studio Classroom.

A new direction
Franklin stopped living just for himself and began searching for ways to help others. Sometime later while on a mission trip, he met some of the world's poorest people. Witnessing such despair changed Franklin's life. And in 1979, he became the CEO and president of Samaritan's Purse. The organization focuses on helping people in need.
Samaritan's Purse
Samaritan's Purse provides surgery for children with heart disease and job training for adults. Medical, educational and emergency help are all provided. For over 35 years, the organization has given aid and hope to hurting people worldwide.
Samaritan's Purse has also aided people suffering from natural disasters. Within two days of a devastating cyclone in Myanmar earlier this year, the organization was there. They worked with local churches to provide food and clean drinking water.
Franklin no longer worries about being in the shadow of his famous father. These days, he's doing things his way while making a huge difference in the world.

Chat Room
Teaching Topic: Biblical Allusions 教學主題: 聖經的典故
a good Samaritan:这是圣经里的一个人物,现在表示一个乐善好施者
doubting Thomas:多疑的,疑心重的人
prodigal son:回头的浪子

---Hi, friends. Welcome to another Chat Room.
---This is Ken. And I'm Naomi.
---Naomi, we're talking about the organization Samaritan's Purse today. I've heard this word Samaritan before. What does it mean when you call someone a Samaritan?
---A good Samaritan is someone who unselfishly helps people, even if he doesn't know them or have any connection with them at all.
---But why? Where does this term come from?
---Well, this term comes from the Bible. And we call this kind of figure of speech an allusion, because it alludes or refers to a well-known person, place, event, book or work of art.
---a good Samaritan就是一个好撒玛利亚人,这是圣经里的一个人物,而现在当我们称某一个人为a good Samaritan我们说他是一个乐善好施者,这是一种allusion就是指暗指,暗示的意思。What are some other biblical allusions?
---Well, have you ever heard someone being called a doubting Thomas?
---Yes. That means that they're... uh, they don't believe things very easily.
---Right. And this also comes from the Bible. Thomas was a man who wouldn't believe what people told him until he could see the proof for himself.
---What about a prodigal son? That's from the Bible, too, isn't it?
---It is. This man asked his father for money and then went away and wasted it all. But when he returned home, his father forgave him and welcomed him with open arms.
---So if a person left a place and then returns and is welcomed back, we can call him a prodigal son?
---Exactly.
---在英文当中其实有不少圣经的典故,就像doubting Thomas ,Thomas是耶稣的一个门徒,但是他一直不相信耶稣的复活,所以后来doubting Thomas就用来形容一个多疑的,疑心重的人。另外还有prodigal son指的是回头的浪子,这也是圣经里的一个人物
---Well, it's time for a short break. But like the prodigal son, Studio Classroom will be back. So stay right where you are.
