Research has shown that your talent for happiness is, to a large degree, determined by your genes. And yet, scientists who study happiness believe we can achieve happiness.
1. Don’t worry: choose to be happy
The most important step, however, is to make a choice to gain your happiness. In his book, The Achievement of happiness, Bertrand Russell siad, “Happiness must be an achievement rather than a gift of the gods, and in this achievement, effort, both inward and outward, must play a great part.”
Once you’ve decided to be happier, you can choose some good ways to gain happiness.
2. To be thankful
In his book, Real Happiness, professor Martin Seligman encourages readers to perform a daily “gratitude(感恩)exercise”. This helps people keep away from sorrow and despair, he says, and makes people happier.
3. Remember: Money can’t buy happiness
Research shows that having more money than you actually need brings very little extra happiness. “Part of the reason is that people aren't very good at understanding what to do with the money,”says George Loewenstein, an economist at Carnegie Mellon University.
4. Take part in meaning activities
People are seldom happier, says professor Michael, than when they’re in the “flow”. Yet he has found that the most common leisure time activity----watching TV----produces some of the lowest levels of happiness. To get more out of life, we need to put more into it. “Active leisure that helps a person grow does not come easily,” he writes in Finding Flow.
So it turns out that happiness can be a matter of choice----not just luck. Some people are lucky enough to have genes that produce happiness. However, certain thought patterns and interpersonal skills surely help people become “except in experience”, says David Lynken.
65.The passage mainly tells us
A.why some people are born happy.
B.the importance of being engaged in good activities.
C.some useful ways to achieve happiness.
D.some new discoveries related to happiness.
66.Acoording to the passage, which of the following is the key to gaining happiness?
A.To earn money        B.To have some good genes
C.To change one’s attitude   D.To watch less TV.
67.According to Martin Seligman, we know that
A.it is necessary to experience sadness if you want to be happy.
B.we need to put more into life if we want to get more out of it.
C.being thankful can help us get rid of our sadness and get happier.
D.we must work hard if we want to gain more happiness
68.After reading the passage, we can infer that                .
A.researchers hardly make mistakes. B.everyone can be happy if he chooses to be happy.
C.our genes determine if we are happy.D.the author must be a famous doctor himself.

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours.
When I was in the eigth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable socil behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say: “Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write spearate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.
When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend. He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had left bad at that time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted..
For almost four years I have had a remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: “Yes, I must tell•••” though we have never met.
It is such comforting companions I wish to keeo. One bright hour with their kindness is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家), who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.
73.I the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to
A.become serious about her study    B.go to her friend’s house regularly    C.learn from her claamates at school    D.share poems and stories with her friend

A.seek professional help          B.be left alone
C.stay with her best friend         D.break the silence
76.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Unforgettable Experiences       B.Remarkable Imagination
C.Lifelong Friendship             D.Noble Companions

We are all interested in equality, but while some people try to protect the school and examination system in the name of equality, others, still in the name of equality, want only to destroy it.
Any society which is interested in equality of opportunity and standards of achievement must regularly test its pupils. The standards may be changed—no examination is perfect—but to have no tests or examinations would mean the end of equality and of standards. There are groups of people who do not believe in examinations or in any controls in school or on teachers. This would mean everything would depend on luck since every pupil would depend on efficiency, the values and the purpose of each teacher.
Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them—a form of favoritism will replace equality. At the moment, the bright child from an ill—respected school can show certificates to prove he is suitable for a job, while the lack of a certificate indicates indicates the unsuitability of a dull child attending a well-respected school. This defence of excellence and opportunity would disappear if examinations were taken away, and the bright child from a poor family would be a prisoner of his school’s reputation, unable to compete for employment with the child from the favored school.
The opponents of the examination system suggest that examinations are an evil force because they show difference between pupils. According to these people, there must be no special, different academic class. They have even suggestd that there should be no form of difference in sport or any other area: all jobs or posts should be filled by unsystematic selection. The selection would be made by people who themselves are probably selected by some computers.
77.What would happen if examinations were taken away according to the author?
A.Schools for bright children would lose their reputation.
B.There would be more opportunities and excellence.
C.Children from poor families would be able to change their schools.
D.Children’s job opportunity would be affected by their school reputation.
78.The opponents of the examination system will agree that
A.jobs should not be assigned by systematic selection.
B.computers should be selected to take over many jobs.
C.special classes are necessary to keep the school standards.
D.schools with academic subjects should be done away with.
79.The passage mainly focuses on
A.schools and certificates            B.examinations and equality
C.opportunity and employment       D.standards and reputation
80.The underlined word “reputation”menas

First, if you enjoy reading science fiction, there’s an exciting new book by Alan Cooper called Shallow Earth. It takes place in the future where Earth has almost been destroyed. The main characters are a group of soldiers who are fighting to save the Earth from total disaster. If you are in the mood for something romantic, that’s Give Me Shelter, by Kathleen Wang. It’s a historical novel set in China, and tells a story of two teenagers growing up in Shanghai in the 1930s. They decided to run away together after the families tried to stop them seeing each other. Finally that’s Jump For The Stars, a biography of one of Houston Rocket’s most popular players Tracy McGrady. Find out how he started his NBA career, who had the greatest effect on his life, and how he’s made his fortune by doing what he loves. That’s all for Book Talk this week. See you next week and keep reading!

One possible version:
Recently we’ve had a discussion about whether students of Senior 3 should take physical exercise.
As we know, every coin has two sides. 55% of the students think they should take all kinds of exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing table tennis and playing basketball. Proper exercise can build up their body and prevent lots of diseases. What’s more, sports let their brains have a good rest so that their study will be more effective.
On the other hand, 45% of the students believe taking exercise is a waste of time and it is tiring. After having sports, they are too excited for a long time to pay attention to their lessons. And it’s possible to be hurt in sports.
In my opinion, we should take proper exercise in order to study more effectively, but never spend too much time on it, because our study time is very limited and precious.
