"Mon corps est le catalyseur de ma fascination pour les représentations masculines stéréotypées. En jouant des thèmes classiques de la bravade masculine, de l'héroïsme et du narcissisme, je juxtapose les poses classiques à des attitudes quotidiennes de la société contemporaine. Ma pratique quotidienne de la musculation est vue de manière stéréotypée comme une entreprise typiquement masculine. Sans avoir besoin de me représenter dans l'acte, la représentation de mon corps sculptural induit cette activité performative. Cet athlétisme, ajouté à la théâtralité d'une représentation double ou triple sur une même scène, est conçu pour évoquer subtilement les sentiments de compétition, de crainte et d'omnipotence - en relation avec le souci de la performance. Bien que je me représente le plus souvent dans des grands dessins à échelle humaine, l'espace représenté est sans profondeur, avec juste assez de place pour que les personnages puissent exister et interagir. Ce manque de profondeur est une référence à l'espace Néoclassique, dans lequel les corps Spartiates étaient utilisés pour incarner visuellement la force de l'Empire. L'espace des dessins est construit pour inspirer un sentiment de claustrophobie et renvoie directement au corps du spectateur. C'est un espace intermédiaire ou marginal, un royaume visuel trop petit pour que les personnages puissent y exister confortablement - mais assez considérable pour s'y projeter." "My body is a catalyst for my fascination with stereotypic masculine portrayals. Utilizing historic themes of male bravado, heroism and narcissism I juxtapose the mundane realities of everyday contemporary life. The act of weightlifting, attaining a well-sculpted body is envisioned stereotypically as a visual mark of masculine enterprise, an act I partake in on a daily basis. Without needing to see me engaged in the act itself, my drawn body infers a performative athleticism. This athleticism coupled with the theatricality of a doppelganger or triplet existing on the same stage is designed to subtly evoke feelings of competition, fear and omnipotence- all in relation to performance anxiety. Although in most of these drawings I depict my body in a life-sized scale, the pictorial space in these drawings is quite shallow, with enough room for the figures to exist and interact. This lack of spatial depth is referential to Neo-Classical space, in which Spartan bodies were used to visually epitomize the strength of empire. The containment of space in these drawings is structured to illustrate a sense of claustrophobia and is directly referential to the viewer’s own body. This is a space that is in-between ormarginal, a visual realm that is too small to exist within comfortably- but is considerable enough to contemplate being in."
