Re: Wheelock’s Latin -- 一部让人 爱憎分明 的Latin primer

Disclaimer: 纯属个人意见， 而且知道一定会会 成为 Wheelock lover 潜在暗杀对象。

爱憎分明： one either loves it or hate it. (Sort of like the attitude towards Hillary Clinton, very little MIDDLE ground)

Latin primers 实在太多，而且个性绝对突出（就像 《红楼梦》人物，every Latin primer has its distinct personality--unlike the mass produced consumer goods, which is FUNGIBLE).

The initiation of Latin 有三难：
a. Grammar (accidence)
b. Syntax
c. Vocabulary

这三难是明的，摊在桌面儿上的。暗的是 精神层面上的东西--简称为 Roman Heart and Mind：

Roman WAY OF THINKING/MENTALITY (values, morality, preferences, tastes, simplicity, 对奴隶制的复杂情感等等)

Roman Heart/Mind 多数只能意会，很难言传， or in other words, the best way to instill that is CASE studies (by typical/representative stories)。

Wheelock 的书走的是“专项整治”路线--专门整治 Grammar (accidence), 在这方面优点突出，把 Wheelock 的书当成 a reference Latin grammar 是一点都不过分地， 也是one correct way to use it.

当然，有了这个“好”，其他的就难免打折扣。 Wheelock 对 vocabulary 抱 实用主义的原则，全书共采用1，500个词汇，数量上不能算少，passive vocabulary 为主，在使用的质量上（即让reader对 Latin vocabulary 本质特征的领悟）大有商榷余地。

最大的“失”在什么地方呢？ Wheelock 正文部分以毫不关联的 句子为主，因此，reader 失去对掌握connected passages 所必需的全局概念--不能不说，这一条至少会让很多自学者迅速lose interest in Latin--what's the point drills after drills, 根本让人看不到 accidence/syntax 的底嘛。伴随这种逆反心理，很容易在潜意识里产生 on god, the Romans are such a freaking wierd people -- 这种恶感一旦产生后果是：一朝被蛇咬，十年怕草绳。Can anything ever be achieved out of FEAR?

另一个极端是 Walter Ripan's A Rapid Latin Course--很难想象该书原是为英国社会上的Latin补习班、速成班所使用。这部书的作者显然对古罗马人极具好感，在序言里就assert, 我们盎格鲁人从来没有 沉稳内敛 的概念 （gravitas）, which is the hallmark of the personality of the Roman people...全书的基调就已经定下了。 走的路线是 natural language 和感情路线。全书以章回体中篇小说的形式展开，极有独创性，故事主要人物都是十三四岁的少男少女，生活在公元1~2世纪的罗马，故事情节都发生在4~5个月内，他们经历的暑假和各种人和事之后，成熟起来。在原作者的精心安排下，罗马的一切都极富人情味，都是那么的美好（对奴隶制的美言超过达赖喇嘛对西藏农奴制的美化）， 神圣得不容玷污……除去这些明显的但从一个角度可以理解的美化(albeit with a definite purpose, to instill the likability of the Roman people to its readers), the lasting impression one has for its creator is his creativity. 至于 Ripman的Latin style, 就不评述了。

Tetlow 和 Preble 都极重视 vocabulary, Tetlow 尤其重视 Latin phrases, 但Tetlow的书一定得配合1888年版的 Allen and Greenough's Latin Grammar, 否则没法用。Preble 自己也revise 过 Andrews and Stoddard's Latin Grammar, 能把枯燥的grammar写成 给Latin 的情书，Preble 就算不是空前绝后，也是 noble feat. 上述均可在 books.google.com 下载。

The Climax Latin series 又是另一幅心肠--充分巧妙化解Latin grammar 对初学者尤其是自学者所带来的冲击。和 Ripman 等其他educators 一样，他们都充分认识到：Latin is fundamentally different than English. 但解决方案并不一致。Magoffin/Berry 团队走的是 connected passages 道路（充分吸收 classic Greek 教学上的得失成败后的经验教训）， 在使用vocabulary上要careful 得多，因此能让人学到比较多的 active vocabulary, 而不是死鱼烂肉，just for recognition purposes. 语法解说比较适中，先阅读后语法讲解而且往往某些语法在前几课就开始出现，有了一定积累和感性认识才说明原理，此外后几课还会“不经意”地重复several times, 不像 Wheelock 讲语法，绝对是没有前戏后戏的，一篇课文从头到尾都是 grammar, 篇与篇之间也没有什么必然联系。不怕你大头，就怕头不大。

肖原的《拉丁语基础》， 似乎还不及 Wheelock, even though it's the most complete Latin primer available in Chinese as of now.
