These latest findings are part of a study done by the Pew Internet & American Life Project that surveyed 4,001 adults aged 18 and older in early 2006. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.

2006年11月29日 星期三 11:31 P.M. Christmas
Christian festival celebrated on December 25, commemorating the birth of Jesus.
December 25 had already been identified by Sextus Julius Africanus in AD 221 as the day on which Christmas would be celebrated, and it was celebrated in Rome by AD 336. During the Middle Ages Christmas became extremely popular, and various liturgical celebrations of the holiday were established. The practice of exchanging gifts had begun by the 15th century. The Yule log, cakes, and fir trees derive from German and Celtic customs. Christmas today is regarded as a family festival with gifts brought by Santa Claus (see St. Nicholas). As an increasingly secular festival, it has come to be celebrated by many non-Christians.

2006年11月28日 星期二 5:21 P.M. Silently falling conquered by the darkness of the night
Concealed in the shadows of time, blurred images in sight
Awaiting for the hope that reveals delight within despair
In spite of storms, trees are standing what fate did not bear
…And I stand alone beneath the oak tree awaiting freedom
To be unleashed from sorrow, not ceaselessly sing in requiem
In thy woods, melancholy, thee watch… ye laugh above
Though wideness, heavy air is my eternal borderline…
Suddenly a nightingale sings a strain… O so sweet!
The strain that conquers the swan song's desperate beat
O nightingale! Sing it once again for the ears underneath
Tell the air his heaviness is preventing me to breathe
Like hypnotized I walk towards the lake of bitterness
Regardless my past life, I see future within the aeons
Of enigmatic thoughts… what is life? |
2006年11月27日 星期一 3:06 A.M. Machen (1881-1937) was Professor of New Testament, first at Princeton Theological Seminary, and afterwards at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia. Excerpts from The Christian View of Man (1937).
We come now to ask what sin at bottom is. Widely different answers have been given to this question, and with these different answers have gone different views of the world and of God and of human life. The true answer is to be obtained very clearly in the Bible; but before I present that true answer to you, I want to speak to you about one or two wrong answers, in order that by contrast with them the true answer may be the more clearly understood.
In the first place, many men have notions of sin which really deprive sin of all its distinctiveness, or, rather, many men simply deny the existence of anything that can properly be called sin at all. According to a very widespread way of thinking in the unbelief of the p |
2006年11月25日 星期六 7:22 P.M. The generally accepted practice throughout the English-speaking world on New Year's Eve is to gather at midnight (usually in such locations as Times Square in New York and Trafalgar Square in London), drink a toast to the coming year and sing a rousing chorus of a song which has become indivisible with the celebration of modern New Year's festivities. That song being "Auld Lang Syne," with words in the Scottish dialect, transcribed by Robert Burns and written around 1788. The title means "old long since" or "long ago" and the melody based on an old Scottish folk tune. The lyrics and music were first published together in Volume V of the "Scots Musical Museum" in 1796, approximately six months after the death of Scotland's Bard.
Not only sung at New Year, but also sung on Burns' Night, this song of friendship and salutation was by no means the first of its kind. In a note written to one George Thomson in 1793, Burns describes th |
2006年11月23日 星期四 8:41 A.M. sin
Wrongdoing, particularly the breaking of moral or religious rules.
In the Hebrew scriptures, sin is viewed as a hatred of God or defiance of his commandments. The New Testament regards sinfulness as the inherent state of humanity, which Jesus came into the world to heal. Christian theologians divide sin into actual and original sin. Actual sin, consisting of evil acts, words, and deeds, is in turn divided into mortal sin, in which the perpetrator deliberately turns away from God, and venial sin, a less serious transgression committed without full awareness of wrongdoing. In Islam, sin is a straying from God's path; the prophets were sent to guide people back to the true path. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the good and evil deeds one commits in this life affect one's rebirth in the next.

2006年11月21日 星期二 11:19 P.M. Shortly after King Alexander III died after a fall from his horse, two claimants to the throne stepped forward – John Balliol and Robert Bruce. With Scotland on the brink of civil war, the Guardians of Scotland called upon King Edward I of England, one of the most powerful rulers in Europe, to determine who was the rightful heir. However, Edward saw this as an opportunity to annex his neighbor to the north. Through any means necessary, Edward persuaded many Scottish noblemen to swear allegiance to him – while those who continued to support King John, namely Sir Andrew Murray and William Wallace, began to rebel. By the end of the conflict, some of the most impressive battles in military history were fought – and Scottish Independence was secured. |
