It is a more complex manuever in that one needs to have a very good foundation in the basics, particularly the yoyo, before you can master it. The Barrel Roll is very similar to the lag roll, but it is defensive in nature. Hence it will be done with greater urgency.
The barrel roll is defensive because its goal is to force the overshoot of an attacker who is closing fast. The idea is not so much to slow your plane down in airspeed, but to shorten the distance you cover in a straight line by adding lateral movement. Think of it this way. An attacker is closing on your six from altitude. He is traveling from point A (Your six o'clock position) to point B (a position leading your flight path at 12 o'clock). By pushing your flight path to the side in a barrel-shaped circle, you lengthen the time it takes you to travel to point B while your attacker is already closing upon point B with great speed as it is. Also the complexity of the movements is able to defeat a guns resolution in the short term.
Execute the Barrel Roll by:
"Know that all gun defensives moves are sucker moves. But even the best pilots can be caught with a barrel roll because it is so subtle and sudden. The counter is for your opponent to lag his rolls and stay on top of the manuever." "You will not master this move simply by flying offline with smoke enabled. You will want to have a trainer in the back seat at some point, or a friend, who can watch your move and evaluate it. Be patient. It is an extremely deadly move and very rewarding when you can reverse a situation from your six to your twelve for a kill."

This maneuver is useful in making the transition from lead pursuit in the target's beam area or forward hemisphere to a rear-hemisphere position. Such a situation may develop when an attacker is performing lead pursuit against a bogey at fairly long range and the defender turns toward the attacker. At some point the attacker may realize that continued lead pursuit would result in passing the bogey at very high AOT (i.e., in his forward hemisphere). A barrel-roll attack is initiated with a wings-level pull-up and a roll toward the bogey, as with the lag roll. Since the range to the target is considerably greater, however, the climb established is continued for a longer time, resulting in a greater altitude advantage over the defender. Again the rolling pull is timed with the target's motion so the attacker arrives at a position well above the bogey, inverted, before passing slightly behind the defender. As the attacker approaches the overhead position his altitude advantage and gravity assist may provide the opportunity for him to pull hard down toward the target, remaining inside the horizontal boundaries of the bogey's turn, for a "high-side" (i.e., coming down from above and to one side) gun-firing pass. Or, depending on relative aircraft performance, available weapons, or bogey maneuvers, the attacker can delay and moderate his pull-down slightly to arrive at a lag-pursuit position. An illustration of this second option would look much like Figure 2-5, except that, because of the starting conditions, most of the initial phases of the manuever (i.e., the pull-up and roll) would take place in the defender's forward hemisphere. Often there will be a greater heading difference between the fighters at position "2," making lag pursuit impractical. In this case, between times "2" and "3," the attacker may turn steeply nose-low, using lead pursuit to pull inside the bogey's turn. This maneuver keeps nose-tail separation from increasing greatly.

筒滚攻击(BARREL ROLL)“BAR” 又叫做“Lag Displacement Roll”,目的是维持在对方后半球位置,避免水平 OVERSHOOT。 进入条件:你从对手后半球高速接近,对手急转在你的机头前横掠过,你无法保持前置追瞄(见注解)马上就要 OVERSHOOT。 (图 7.1,7.2)你应该大角度拉起机头爬升,将你的动能转换的势能,同时滚转转向对手飞行的方向(比如对手从右向左飞,那么你就向左滚转, 图7.1,7.2位置2),直到飞机倒转,同时搜索并且紧盯住对手。这个时候你要根据对手的下一步动作作出选择: 情况 1: 如果对手继续“转向你”,那么你延续以前的滚转(这时候你已经开始向对手飞行方向相反滚转了)。一般说来在空战中总是将升力线(见注)对准对手,因为沿升力线方向接近对手能获得最大的接近率。不过这次你要向对手飞行相反方向滚转,形象的讲也就是升力线扫过并反方向转离对手。然后拉机头作一个很紧的下转拉向敌机,从下方冲过对手先前横飞的航迹(图 7.1 位置3 ),进入对方的后半球。 如果你动作不够快,或者对手是低翼载战机转地非常紧,那么结果会是一个斜对头甚至头对头,然后或者双方想靠滚转甩开对方会进入 ROLLING SESSION(滚转剪式飞行,见第十章),或者就是拉开距离从头再来,最重要的问题就是你必须能够判断出当你结束动作的时候对方的位置。

情况 3: 如果这时候对手结束转弯直线前进,那么你就直接转向进入他后半球。如果对手已经开始俯冲或者有一定速度,那么你可以考虑维持高度不冲下去。 下面是“FIGHT COMBAT”一书中相关部分: 当你从内圈接近对手的时候,如果你的 AOT(见第八章注解)在30到60度,距离稍远,你就可以稍微放松转弯的力度,用机头跟着对方身后,成为后置追踪(Lag pursuit)。这时候对方会以为你跟不上他就要 OVERSHOOT了,他就会放缓拐弯或者反身想咬你,这时候就中你的圈套。 Lag Pursuit Roll 但是如果你的 AOT 小于 30 度,接近速度很快而且距离也近,这时候如果放松转弯就真的会冲过头 OVERSHOOT,反而被对方反咬。如果你急转(Break Turn)避免冲过头会丧失能量而且也会丢失目标,这时候最好的办法就是 Lag Pursuit Roll。 (图73)初始状况是你用前置追踪从对手左侧内圈接近,而且距离已经很近,对方此时在向左急转(图 73 位置 1)。这时候你先改平,然后拉起机头,在拉机头的同时向右滚转(此处的滚转方向和 190 一书所述相反),如果可能,飞行方向稍微偏向对手前进方向(此处是向左)。 在位置 4 的时候,你就可以在头顶升力线处目视敌机,此时正好顺敌机飞行方向滚转,可以一直从头顶方向盯住对手。 这时候你就可以一边盯着对方一边滚转(当然要维持爬升角度!),当你确定自己已经从上方越过对方的航迹后(图 73 位置 2),就开始慢慢地朝着对方拉机头。这时候你可以维持向对手目视接触,对手应该在你左斜下方,在跟踪对手的同时你会开始降低高度同时增加速度,利用重力化势能为动能,逐渐降到和对手一个平面甚至更低,进入后置追踪同时拥有能量优势。 因为你在整个动作过程中没有拉很大的 G 值,所以能量损失少于对手(他进行了高 G 转弯)。这个动作突出了空战的哲学,能量第一!狂拉 G 获得小转弯半径的代价就是损失能量。其次就是空战是三维作战,无非就是如何低损耗地转换能量达成战术目的。
对付 Lag Pursuit Roll 的方法就是当攻击方在最高点的时候(位置2),防守一方靠俯冲获得速度逃走。 Lag Diaplacment Roll Lag Pursuit Roll 的第一个变种就是 Lag diaplacement roll。初始状况是你距离对方很近,接近率并不高。你的目的是拉大距离同时减小 AOT,比如为了把对手放进自己导弹的发射角,从对方航迹的内圈跳到外圈。具体动作同上。 战例: “USAF Colonel Robin Olds,我发现 10 点方向一架左转的 MIG-21,我猛拉向左,切入他的内圈,然后拉起机头 30 度,向右筒滚。我自己头朝下倒转同时保持在 MIG-21 的后侧上方高 6 点处,当角度和距离合适的时候我结束滚转向下冲到 MIG-21 的后侧下方低 7 点钟处。此时我速度 0.95M,距离对手 4500 英尺,AOT 是 15 度。MIG-21 很配合地拉起机头(被对方紧咬 6 点时爬高是空战大忌,会损失速度给对方一个稳定的射击机会),我将它套在响尾蛇的射击圈内,耳机里传来稳定的信号声,我抠了下扳机、然后又一次。第一发响尾蛇冲了出去,似乎犹豫了一秒钟,然后向左进入了一个优美的碰撞航线……MIG-21 突然化成了一朵柠檬色的火球” Barrel Roll Lag Pursuit Roll 的另一个变种是 Barrel-roll(攻击性的筒滚)。一般是你在对方前半球,或者你正在进行前置追踪,但是双方距离比较大,这样对方有机会掉头转向你。这时候类似 Lag Roll 你拉机头同时滚转朝向对方,因为彼此距离比较远所以可以爬升比较长的时间。当你将要越过对方上空并且此时你脑袋朝下,就可以拉机头向下追他。把自己飞机的投影保持在对方航迹圈内,这样就可以进行一次Snapshoot,或者也可以选择后置追踪进入对手 6 点。 整个动作类似 Lag Roll,无非因为初始 AOT 很大,所以爬升动作基本发生在对手前半球,而且从位置2到位置3(图73)时候要拉地狠一点,用前置追踪切入对方内圈。 对付 Barrel-roll,如果对方从前半球来你就同样也来一个 Barrel-roll,如果防守方能在攻击方位置 1 到 2 之间的时候获得更大的高度,就有可能最后进入攻击方的后半球。 Lag Pursuit Roll 最容易犯的错误就是动作开始的时候没有足够的“前置追踪量”。这样当你一开始拉机头,对方马上就消失在机头下面,你必须马上快速滚转来找对方,这就大大缩短了爬升时间和应该获得的能量优势。另外一个错误就是开始爬升太晚,这样对方在你爬升的时候就可以俯冲逃走,对手甚至可以当你在位置 2 的时候突然拉起,此时你正在俯冲而且 AOT 很大,会造成垂直方向的 OVERSHOOT。所以最重要的就是保证从位置 1 到 2 有充分的爬升。最好在开始的时候你还拥有一定的速度优势,因为最后到达相同位置你飞行的路程要长过对手。 注:升力线(Lift Vector)形象地讲就是飞行员头顶正上方的方向。一般互相缠斗咬尾的时候都将升力线对准对手,获得最大的接近率,同时也产生大 G 值(当然也是能量损失最快!),而防守的时候将对手放在升力线处,相对对手角速度最大,对手最难瞄准或者进入 6 点。
