应该说，Robin是一位以“沉静领导”著称的企业家。但你又会看到，他所领导的百度，却总是充满激情，充满创新精神，积极向上的。 这样的“落差”，是缘于人们看到了Robin“沉静领导”的表象——或是看到了他的行事风格与个性特征，而没有看到他的内心世界。 我们来读一读Robin最近在他的空间写的“读网笔记”，或许可以打开他的内心，也可以打开百度的一扇大门： Robin说："People who win big in life are typically not driven by financial gain, they are driven by an internal spark that makes them want to win, compete, and solve problems with a community of like minded people.” （译文：那些在一生中取得巨大成就的人，成功的动力并非源于收获财富，而是在于内心的那束火光，那股让一个人向往胜利、渴望竞争、期望与有思想有智慧的人们一同征服困难的冲动。） 只有在百度的人，才能真切地身同感受到这句话，尤其是感受到“那束火光”。“那束火光”，是那样地让“百度人民”充满激情，朝气蓬勃，他们为自己是百度人而自豪。 这样的令人自豪而值得骄傲的公司，总是有太多的相近之处，这正应了列夫•托尔斯泰的一句名言：“幸福的家庭是相似的，不幸的家庭各有各的不幸”。 再继续看Robin下面的笔记： "My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them better. My job is to pull things together from different parts of the company and clear the ways and get the resources for the key projects. And to take these great people we have and to push them and make them even better, coming up with more aggressive visions of how it could be.” "We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? So this is what we’ve chosen to do with our life. We could be sitting in a monastery somewhere in Japan. We could be out sailing. Some of the [executive team] could be playing golf. They could be running other companies. And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.
