纽约时报(New York Times)有两篇关于这次“印度恐怖袭击”,Amitav Ghosh写了一篇文章India’s 9/11? Not Exactly,Pankaj Mishra 写了一篇Fresh Blood From an Old Wound,一下是来自网友的几封对此文章和印度恐怖袭击问题评论性信件,都是很好的英语评论小文章。以后也会多发点评论性的文章,多学习下评论性语言。 To the Editor: Re “India’s 9/11? Not Exactly,” by Amitav Ghosh (Op-Ed, Dec. 3): I completely agree with Mr. Ghosh when he says the Indian response should not be one of “precipitate action.” As an Indian citizen, I was witness to the tragedy that played out on Indian television for hours. It was surreal and horrific. Is it not then apt to say that the Indian citizenry has been pushed to the brink? If the mood of Indian citizens is to demand change in this situation, then it is completely justified. The central and Maharashtra governments had a responsibility; they let us down. The level of anger in Indian people can be judged by the stiff responses that they command from their leaders. Then, the real danger that we face as Indian people is being blinded by antagonism and passionate rhetoric. Militarily engaging with Pakistan is not a commendable option. We can neither afford to be complacent nor feel dispossessed by our democracy. I am hard pressed to come up with many recent success stories.(epic-old 史诗岁) As an American of Indian descent who witnessed the attacks of 9/11 firsthand and the siege in Mumbai on TV, I cringe at the suggestion that these acts of terrorism against civilians should be regarded as evidence of a flawed political position rather than what they are — cowardly attacks by people who have a warped sense of what honor is and who cannot and should not be negotiated with. The war on terror will remain mired in ineffectiveness until India, Pakistan and Afghanistan stop working against one another and develop a joint strategy of cooperation toward a common objective. (共同目标) Kashmir’s long-simmering conflict seems to preclude such an approach. One hopes that the resolution of this issue with the consequent contribution to peace in South Asia and security of the United States would be among the top priorities of the Obama-Clinton team.
