M/T简单地说就是公吨，公吨是tonne或者metric ton，吨是ton。1公吨（tonne, metric ton）= 1000公斤，1吨（ton）= 1016公斤（Br）或907.2公斤（US）。但事情并不是这么简单。
公吨是公制的单位，在英文中原本的表达法为tonne或者metric ton。由于用公吨的人太多，人都喜欢偷懒，故常把metric ton缩略为ton。国外客户说ton的时候，有可能是指metric ton。我们中国人说吨，其实指的都是公吨，因为中国采用公制。（我们说1吨等于1000公斤，也证明了我们所说的吨，其实是公吨。）
