Many people would argue that Internet censorship is in essence a violation of our right to free speech, which greatly cripples beliefs, and furthermore it prohibits many from expressing their views. While I admit that we have the right to express ideas and the right to receive them, I still feel that Internet censorship is a necessity in society today.
First and foremost, censorship is good for society as a whole. It is like a law: for the common good, which ensures that the corrupting values will not be spread. We must protect people from some obscene and harmful material that can be accessed.
Moreover, small children do not have the maturity to view pornographic material or be exposed to extreme violence on the Internet. Indeed, exposing young children to entertainment of this sort would be detrimental to their development. Besides, obscene and harmful material on the Internet, such as child pornography should be obliterated.
Last of all, censorship is not taking away the rights of citizens; it is protecting the rights of people who do not wish to be exposed to certain nasty things. It is also a great tool in preserving morals and social order. Violence and pornography online are obvious to encourage criminal or immoral behavior.
In a nutshell, I firmly believe that Internet censorship is justified. By allowing violent, pornographic and misleading material to be openly exposed to the public we are endangering safety and society’s values. Therefore, harmful information available on the Internet should be regulated by the government and censorship is a beneficial and effective means to be applied in order to keep society at a safe, respectable, and just level.
