Curtain Up: With the crowds come plenty of entertainment options
Things are starting to pop around town as the population swells. The Phil season begins. The theater season gets going. (It may sound hifalutin to call what we have a “theater season,” but look around ― with Cafe curtain all the groups now gearing up to present there will soon be plays to take in almost every weekend.) The Met has already begun its HD broadcasts. The music series at the churches are presenting superior talent. Everywhere you look something is going on.
The community is also coming out of its shell with outdoor events. Last weekend alone, there was an arts show and Philharmonic Orchestra concert at Cambier Park (as of this writing I do not know whether this in fact went forward ― pretty windy out there today) and the inaugural Stone Crab Festival. Maybe things didn’t go perfectly ― word is they actually ran out of crabs on Saturday ― but they will learn. It was a nice event with Cafe curtain music and entertainment and a big crowd enjoying themselves.
Of course my main interest is theater. As I look forward to this year’s offerings, the curmudgeon in me is awakening. There are a couple of things on my wish list for the coming year, changes of habit that I humbly propose would make the world a better place.
I wish the theaters would include in their warnings, along with “no pictures” and “turn off your cell phones,Finding costume inspiration,” an admonition not to sing along with the music. I don’t care that you know all the words to “Sunrise, Sunset,” I would rather hear the people on the stage sing it. If you do find yourself inadvertently bursting out, be responsive to the dirty looks from the other audience members and stop it. If I nicely shush you, I’m not the rude one.
Second ― and I know I’m whistling in the wind, but here goes ― enough with Cafe curtain the standing ovations. Not everything deserves it. My position is that once a year is probably about right. If you like what you saw that much, keep applauding,复件 (7) 新建 文本文档, invest some palm leather,Palfinger hydraulic lifting systems exhibit at thi,Lace front wigs, bring the cast back for two or three or five curtain calls. Then I’ll believe that something is motivating you other than the desire to be the first one out the door to get to your car.
