When you walk along a street in a big city in the United States, you may see clocks in most stores. Radio announcers give the correct time during the day. People there think that it is important to know the time. Most Americans have watches. They want to do certain things at certain times. They do not want to be late.
Not all people all over the world value time. Suppose you visit a certain country in South America. You would find that people living there do not like to rush. If you had an appointment with someone, he would probably be late. He would not care for arriving on time. In some countries in South America, even the radio programs may not begin right on time, nor do the radio announcers think it important to announce the right time. Weather has a strong effect on people. It influences health, intelligence, and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states will have heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 study by scientists, the IQ scores of some college students were very high during a storm, but after the storm, their scores were low. Storms can increase intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can lower it. Students in many schools of the United States often do badly on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong effect on people’s feeling. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel depressed during cold weather. In hot summer weather, on the other hand, fat people may feel unhappy. At about 65ºF, people become stronger.
Low air pressure makes people feel free, but it also increases forgetfulness. People leave more bags and umbrellas on buses and in stores on low-pressure days. There is a “perfect weather” for work and health. People feel best at a temperature of about 64ºF with 65 percent humidity.
Are you feeling sick, sad, tired, forgetful, or very intelligent today? The weather may be the reason.

Charlie VanDreel was 17 years old, and although he had left school, he preferred living in the comfort and convenience of his parents’ home to living alone. He said that he was trying to find a job, but there never seemed to be one that he thought good enough for him. His father wanted him to leave home and earn some money, but his mother loved Charlie very much and wanted him to stay, so she never interfered with what he might want to do.
Charlie did not wash his hair very often, he shaved once a week, and he could not bear wearing shoes, so his feet were nearly always dirty.

Also, Charlie’s father often had to go abroad on business.
But Mr. VanDreel sometimes saw his son at weekends, and then he was always angry with him. He used to say to him: “Why ever don’t you shave every day? Who ever would give you a job with your dirty hair? Where ever are your shoes?” and so on.
“But father,” Charlie always said, “I don’t care about those things. All my friends are like me nowadays, and if I changed, I wouldn’t be popular with them any more.”

I was forbidden to breakfast at 10, and walk about the house with dirty feet, and grow a beard, and wear gold chains, and behave like a …”
He went on and on until Charlie said kindly, “Poor father, my grandfather died before I was born, so I never met him, but he must have been a terrible old gentleman.”
